Filming a stone built water well sunk around the early 1700's.
A hunting lodge and stables were built on the land in the mid 1800's.
The entrance to the well was offset a few feet to allow for an entrance to the stable block.
It looks like the well may have been repaired with bricks in the past and a date stone appears to have been placed at the top of the well shaft.
The date stone reads 'WW 1715', the land owner is believed to be William Wood at the time.

This what my Forman does for a hobby. During the week we restore old buildings in Cincinnati. On the weekends he digs old privys. One of his friends lost his life when one collapsed on him. What an Amazing video you have here . Very interesting to think this hasn't seen light since it was built.

That’s very sad about your Forman’s friend. I think this one may have had some reinforcing done in the past. It’s the 3rd I’ve filmed so far. The last one I filmed had a depth of 14mts of water before I hit the bottom. Hard to believe that men were once down there sinking the shaft. Thanks for watching.

Could you add some commentary about the exact method of construction of these wells? Thanks!

Thanks for watching. Here’s a link for a good description of a well sinkers description. www.threapwoodhistory.org/Documents/bricklinedwells.pdf

Great video and animation. I would love to show this at our local historical society meeting in June as the well is local to us. Do you thin that would be OK? Cheers. Bill

Thanks for watching Bill. Feel free to show the video at your meeting. If you have any more information on the well I will update the description accordingly.

It’s a great video, and I am curious as to how you did it. Did you have a Gopro and a light, which you lowered into the well? We also have a well from 1800, which is 30 feet deep, and I would like to inspect it before we do any work. Thanks for your help

Thanks for watching David. I used an electrical box to house all the wires and filler the lot with candle wax and some lead to allow it all to sink. The gopro session 3 recorded the footage and a vehicle reversing camera provided a live feed through video baluns. Two lights were used, 12v led I think they are 8 or 12 watts. I used the cables to tilt the box towards areas of interest, a bit like a string puppet. I had 4 wires, 1 on each corner. I did have problems with wires tangling themselves in storage so now I have used pvc sleeve to reduce it to two lines which still gives me tilt back and forth.Good luck with the inspection.

This is why there no treasures on Oak Island. The original hole was simply a failed well attempt. No pirates or Templars. Lol. Very nice video I appreciate the work.

What area is this well from..?.. and would you say most wells from this time period would have looked similar in the UK..?.....
2 года назад
This one is located in Northamptonshire. The older ones would have been constructed from local stone, but the construction is pretty much the same all over.

@ Thanks for your reply, do you know if the all descend to the same kind of depth or whether it depends how close they are to the water table they are etc...?..
2 года назад
@@DE-eVOLVED yes, it depends on how far they have to dig to hit the water table or source of water.
