Thank you, Andy! It was a pleasure seeing how someone else carves stone. What limestone was this? It seems incredibly soft. Would love to have some students learn on a soft stone like this. Was nice hearing the tap-tap-tapping in real time as well.

Hi Octonite... I'm glad that you enjoyed the video... This was Maltese Limestone... It is extremely soft, great for beginners.. I purchased it from ..Southern Stone.. in Dorset... They do supply schools and colleges... They also have a good selection of tools... What carving do you do ?... Hope that this will help... Take care my friend and all the best from Andy

Hi Amanda... I'm glad that you liked it... I was a Monumental Mason for 25 years up in Sheffield, South Yorkshire... I learned to carve memorials there... Then we moved down to Cornwall and I have been a general builder/carpenter for about 17 years ... so my carving is a bit rusty... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

Thanks so much Andy This is lovely. So nice to watch I'm starting to stone carve myself and it was good to see how you angled the chisel. We're the petal and leaf surfaces dome with bullnose chisels? What we're the widths of them. I need to get myself a few.so.doing some research Thanks again for showing such a beatific creation 😌🏔🪄

Hi Karen... Thank you very much... I'm glad that you enjoyed it... The 3 bull nosed chisels that I use are approximately 4mm 8mm and 12mm.. These are tungsten carbide tipped chisels which started out as square ended chisels which I shaped using a bench grinder...if you do this you must frequently quench this tip into water to keep it cool... But you can buy them ready shaped now... The only company that I have bought from recently is Southern stone.. in Dorset.. Link..... southern-stone.co.uk/collections/stone-carving-kits They sell a good selection of carving tools and Limestone which is easy to carve... A good starter kit would be... a 4,8 and 12mm bull nosed.. and a 4,8 and 12mm square ended.. And a medium dummy mallet... The fire sharp chisels are fine for soft sandstone slate and limestone .. The tungsten carbide tipped chisels are for harder materials and will keep a sharp edge for longer.. Also a diamond sharpening stone is essential... I hope that this helps and please don't hesitate to ask me for any advice.. Enjoy your carving!! Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy

@@AndysCornishCreations Wow thank you for such a helpful reply, Andy. I've already started my project in PORTLAND stone using a medium scopas dummy mallet from Tiranti. Here's my project so far: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NP2F-Bvmj7A.html ru-vid.comWUHtwceMbo8?feature=share I assume the tungsten tipped from southern stone eill be good for this stone? Any ideas on what tool or technique to use to create a rough texture on the stone surrounding the face and leaves to create a contrast that makes it stand out? Much appreciated

Great vid. just wondering if it was a bull nose chisel u were using for most of this. Be great for us newbies if u could drop this info into commentary aswell. Ps is it Portland stone ur using.
@AndysCornishCreations
@AndysCornishCreations 3 года назад
Hi TT... thank you for your comment... I was using 2 bull nose or round ended chisels... one 1/2 inch and the other 1/4 inch.. carbide tipped ... though this is not necessary for soft stone like Limestone... I also used a 5/8.....1/2 ...1/4... inch standard carbide tipped chisels... the limestone is from Southern stone Ltd... I'm not sure but I think it's a French limestone... very soft but similar to Portland.... I keep meaning to do a basic tutorial but work and life get in the way... I hope that this helps... I s this a new hobby for you... if so ... enjoy... take care...All the best.....Andy

Hi Andy, fascinating work. I would love to learn to carve stone like that but I don't have the facilities! In the time being I get my fix by watching videos like yours on the net. I've been trying to find one of somebody carving a "festoon" type of wreath (like the one on the Wikipedia page), that would be amazing to see since it features on so many classical and traditional buildings, and also on memorials

Hi L...thank you for your comment...I agree...its not something that you can do without a workspace that can get very dusty... not suitable indoors !! ...I was a monumental Mason for 28 years so I learned the trade and got the tools through that...one thing that I did do a few years back was to fill a margerine tub with plaster of Paris and after it had set I carved some flowers etc into that ...its the same principle but nice and soft to work on and you can use an old screwdriver or anything that resembles a chisel... take care...All the best.....Andy

@@AndysCornishCreations thank you for replying back Andy I managed to get permission from the Town Hall today to go to the symmetry,when I got there all locked up what a joke after 50mins a van pulls up o yes its the police saying what am I doing here showed them my papers for me being there great or what 😳 so then one of them and this is not a joke climbed up a tree and got the key to open the gates OMG so now I'm in 2 get the dimensions witch are 72cm across by 63cm down. Then looking all around every tomb faces was all made from black granite,then rang a friend who is spainsh he said that's it black granite no sandstone if I'm lucky meaning pay more money i can put in white marble in so it looks like I'm going to do marble what do you think 🤔
@AndysCornishCreations
@AndysCornishCreations 3 года назад
Hi Nicky... sounds like you have had quite a difficult day... certainly granite is too hard for you to work with, mostly it is shot blasted these days .. it can be cut with a hammer and chisel but very difficult... marble is not as easy as sandstone or limestone but it's not too difficult to cut with a hammer and chisel... you are better using tungsten carbide tipped chisels rather than hardened steel chisels... and you will need a hammer, a small lump hammer or a dolly hammer which is round ... are you going to do lettering and a design... if you order some marble make sure to tell them what you intend to use it for... I'm not sure what they have in Spain but we used to use a soft Carrara marble from Italy...

@AndysCornishCreations
@AndysCornishCreations 3 года назад
Hi Andras... thank you very much... Any kind of limestone should be ok ... this is a soft limestone from France but I have carved many different materials limestone, sandstone, marble, slate... some soft and some hard ... I have even carved granite although I wouldn't recommend it... if it's soft you can use any chisels but when it's harder you will need tungsten carbide tipped chisels... and keep them sharp ... I hope that this will help... take care...All the best.....Andy

Hi Andy! How have you been this week? I should think that you must have been very busy in many ways over the last couple of days... Still, I hope that you have been able to get some quiet time and find a little peace in your days, and that the critical situation with gas and fuel have not made your life too complicated on top of everything else... Here we are still okay for now, but I have a feeling that we are all heading towards tough times as far as availability of crude oil, gas and fuel are concerned... Anyway... I have just watched the two rose carving videos... Soooo beautiful, Andy 😊👍🏻 I am not sure what impresses me more, your drawing skills or your carving skills... Excellency at work, I would say... “I’m a bit rusty” is the understatement of the century 😝 The way you draw these straight lines is fascinating, just to start with... and looking at the finished carving I am thinking to myself how on Earth did he get this shape out of that flat and boring looking piece of limestone... Well, once an artist, always an artist, I suppose! Talent is hard to get rid of, ha ha 😉 By the way, this rose looks like the coat of arms of my village (“my” village always makes me think of a Nigerian chief who I had the dubious pleasure of working with about thirty years ago... He used to call me out of the Nigerian jungle about once a week and would talk at length about “his” village, his seven wives and 46 children, just to ask for spare parts worth several thousands of Swiss Francs in the last 2 minutes of the conversation and then he would hang up on me claiming a bad connection... I swear I am NOT exaggerating for effect, these are the numbers he gave me, ha ha...) Well, “our” coat of arms looks practically identical, with subtle differences in the leaves, but it is very close! Beautifully done, Andy, what else is there to say, bravo 👏🏻 So, I hope you will have a mild and peaceful week with some sunshine... We are having a couple of mild and sunny days, but I hear it will get colder on Tuesday... Let’s see... Take care, Andy, be well 🙏🏻 Cheerio from the rose village 😉👋🏻👋🏻 Jude

Hi Jude... I am very well thank you and I hope that you are too... I managed a bit of workshop time this weekend which is always good for the soul... The fuel crisis was CRAZY... no actual crisis of course but we managed to turn it into one...🙄😔 I hope that you handle it better than we did... I'm glad that you enjoyed the rose carving videos... it is loosely based on our Yorkshire Rose... Interesting to know that it is similar to your village coat of arms... it is a quite heraldic image... I like your story of the Nigerian chief...7 wives and 46 children...omg ... how would anyone get a minutes peace !!! ... Haha I'm happy to hear that you have had some nice weather and yes the cooler weather is coming... It was 3 degrees this morning and it wouldn't take much to get our 1st frost of the Autumn... What is your village called...I would be interested to see the coat of arms... I once carved one about 3 feet high for someone's house in Dronfield, Derbyshire... Have a lovely week Jude and keep an eye open for a chicken... 🤔 Take care...All the best.....Andy 👋👋

@@AndysCornishCreations Hi Andy! I am glad to hear that you are doing fine… I managed to find an English Wiki page on our village, would you believe… You can see our coat of arms there, and a picture of our beautiful church which is just next door to our farm, so to speak… The village is called Reichenburg: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichenburg I will have to go and check out your Yorkshire rose 😊🌸 Right now, we still have no real gas crisis, but crude oil has been going up for a while now, and I have no doubt that before long the trend will spread to gas and fuel… As you say, yet another man-made „crisis“… 😬🙄 Sometimes I think the whole world has gone completely bonkers… I have started to put aside a „quiet reserve“ on the really important medications for my mother because I have noticed that we are starting to have ruptures in the supply chain of some medications… Mind you, in the land of Novartis and Roche… 🙄 Your remark on the 7 wives and the 46 children cracked me up, ha ha 😂🤪👍🏻 My team mate at the time had nick-named me „Number 8“ 😂😝 ha ha… She was half British and we would have crazy laughs about it… I am just glad that I was spared, good Lord, I would rather not think of it 😉😂😱 ha ha ha… Anyway… I have already watched the cute chicken video yesterday, of course 😃🐥👍🏻 I have not commented yet because I was too sleepy, but I will, don‘t you worry, there is no escaping me, ha ha 😉😂 They are super cute! In my mind I call them Ernie and Bert, you know, from Sesame Street, ha ha… I find they bear a cunning resemblance 😂 So I will re-watch the video now and think up some mean comment 😉😎 Have a lovely week, Andy! We had our first frost last night… I have moved all the plants inside today.. Take care, be safe 🙏🏻 Byeeee 👋🏻👋🏻 Jude
