Etching marble countertops is a common concern when people are shopping for kitchen counters. Staining countertops is also a big concern. In this video, we see how different materials react when exposed to wine, lemons, tomato sauce, and olive oil for 18 hours.

I know this was made a few years ago, but it would be great to see the same experiment with putting a hot pan on, and also knife scratching. Thank you for the video!

Isn't Dolce Vita Marble? It is sold around here in the ATL as Marble at the stone yards I visit. I have White Pearl Quartzite out of Brazil. An easy way to test what you are looking at is to take a glass with you to the stone yard. Rub the glass hard on the back edge of the slab and if the slab scratches the glass you are dealing with Granite or Quartzite. I have been educated by a Geologist that there is no such thing as "soft" Quartzite, if you see that make sure you replace the word "soft" with Marble. Some stone yards are now calling it "hard" Marble.. do not let the word "Hard" sway you... it will still act like Marble! There is nothing wrong with Marble. I have it in (Brown Fantasy in my master bath) you should just be educated on what you are paying for and getting installed in your house and always ask for a sample to test, specially when they tell you it is Quartzite. I heard there was a new process out of Italy on Marble to where it is "etch", stain, safe. I saw it at the Decorator Show house in Atlanta in May. Can't wait to see that become more available. Always shop around and make sure you really know what you are buying and make sure you have a fabulous fabricator!

Hi Shelley - sorry I just saw this. Yes, we sell Dolce Vita as a marble, but many people in this area sell it as a quartzite. The person on the video discusses the marble like characteristics in the Dolce Vita in the narrative. We did the test on Sea Pearl, a legitimate Quartzite as well as the Dolce Vita to see how they would compare and work. And your mention of Fantasy Brown is so true -- many people here sell it as granite. We know we have lost sales when we tell people it is marble -- they just buy it from another company. But honesty is best, as you mentioned. We have found that Fantasy Brown does hold up well in kitchens and there are rare issues with etching -- but we always tell a customer it is a marble and give them the opportunity to make an educated decision.

How would the dolomite harder marble hold up when sealed?

upvoted video and thanks for making it. One question, why are there four stone images in the "before and after"? Shouldnt there be only two per type?

We stained both sealed and unsealed materials. I think there are two per before and after, but the camera may have captured one of the adjacent pieces.

What is the sealer you used?

At the point that we did the video, we used ProSeal. We now use Dry Treat.

What sealer do you recommend for quartzite? And do you recommend a good stain poultice for quartzite?

Hi Gina - sorry, we just saw this. We recommend Dry Treat for sealing. I hesitate to recommend a specific poultice for quartzite. Many of the quartzite issues are absorption vs staining and applying a poultice just extends the amount of time you need to dry out a water mark. We take each of these one at a time, but have found that the DryTreat (with directions on the bottle) works best and avoids some of the staining we were seeing prior to using it.
