You hitched it backwards from the way I do it. I set the downline and fiddle stick leash on the same side because the rope looping below the fiddle stick slopes to the downline side and makes retrieving the fiddle stick easier.

This looks a lot like a marlinspike hitch. Would using a marlinspike or similar, of course with a backup line, be appropriate? I'd rather carry a multi-purpose spike, even if it weighs a tad more, than a more limited piece of plastic.

I'd be curious to know how much weight it would take to fold that fiddlestick in half with this configuration. If we only knew someone with the equipment to test it.

Probably wouldn't be rappelling double without locking it off though, you'd have to be in quite a hurry.

So is this just so that the last man at risk can repel simultaneously with the last party member? Seems like unnecessary risk and extra equipment when you could just do the alpine butterfly static twin system and the lmar could just untie it and repel on both strands. Maybe I'm missing something?

the benefit of this system is that the last man gets the benefit of a twin isolated system as the isolation can be removed at the bottom of the pitch. if you used an alpine, the last man wouldn't get the redundancy. Another use (and more common/intended) is to use it to do a single rope rappel so you need half the amount of rope and a much thinner pull cord to reduce weight. it also has the benefit of working on natural anchors, where a typical biner block wouldn't work

@@seanealey3636What exactly is the benefit of the final person to rappel having this so-called twin static system? Surely there is far less potential for failure by switching to a plain old double-stranded rappel at that point?
@seanealey3636
@seanealey3636 Год назад
@@aaronm9353 there are a few reasons, but the main one would probably be efficiency, while one person is going down single strand another can be setting up on the other strand. it may also be preferable to abseil single strand in certain high flow water conditions or with particular devices. Another reason could be wanting to maintain redundancy by having 2 isolated strands so in the event one was cut, the abseiler would still have the 2nd strand. the most common use for this device is for reducing rope weight in the single strand configuration. 60m of wet rope is quite a bit heavier than 30m + a pull cord when hiking back up the hill at the end of the day. Switching to a standard throw and go setup has its own risks associated with it, it's more prone to failure in the event of incorrect device loading (only putting in 1 strand instead of both) and no redundancy if a rope is cut. a Fiddlestick is extremely unlikely to come out while loaded, the risk is usually it getting stuck while trying to release it from the bottom.

Pointless to use with double strand.

Every technique has different use cases. There are plenty of reasons this has benefits.

For example, it can allow you to descend with someone that may be injured or now is in need of assistance. Or if someone does get in trouble you can descend down and lend them a hand. An MMO doesn't solve everything so using this as a double strand can have its uses.
