Americans on their first trip to England usually feel compelled to visit Stonehenge. I confess, I did the same thing myself! But now that I’ve visited Britain over 20 times, and have lived there the past two summers, I feel like there are other stone circles that are just as worthy of a visit. They might not be as famous, but they have their own unique mystery and beauty and story of their own.
In this visit I’ll show you the Rollright Stones, the beautiful countryside where they sit, and share 5 Reasons why you should visit them!
Let me know if you have visited any stone circles and what YOU think of Stonehenge, Avebury, the Rollrights, or any other really old rocks you have visited!
Please be sure to SUBSCRIBE so you don’t miss out on all my upcoming video about “How to Plan a Trip to the Cotswolds” and loads more British fun in store this year! Cheers! XX Dara (and Ian)

You told the story of the Rollright stones beautifully. I also like Avebury very much but I loved being at Stonehenge at midnight on December 31st 1999

Well, that does sound like a special time to be at Stonehenge! But I agree that it's nice to visit some of these other Neolithic places as well 😉

I agree the 5 reasons you mentioned are clearly in favour of Rollright!!! The most important to me is it not being as touristy as Stonehenge. I hate being among a mass of tourists. So I definitely would prefer to visit Rollright. And anyhow, I already visited Stonehenge 40 years ago and as I suppose the stones did not move there, there is no need to visit it once again.🤣
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels Год назад
Yes indeed in the life of Stonehenge, 40 years is nothing! They have changed how you see them though. If you've been once. That's enough 😉

Something of a pet peeve with me when people ask what are 'must see' locations. Travel gurus usually just list the most well known and often crowded destinations, the rise of the instagram travel influencer with the pretty pictures increased this 'check list' type of tourism. 'Visit the UK, here's your list, check off each location'. But the real fun of travel is actually discovering places that generally aren't on any lists, you just create your own list. It's one of the main reason why I enjoy watching travel videos from so called 'smaller' youtubers as I've learnt about so many interesting places in the world I had never heard of. This video is a great example, I've never heard of the Rollright Stones and the site looks fascinating.
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels Год назад
We are definitely on the same wavelength! I agree that it's no fun to go to a country and only visit the most popular places! They are usually crowded, expensive, and stressful. Much more fun to discover hidden gems... like this place 😉Cheers! Dara

As a Cotswolds tour guide I definitely love the Rollright Stones! Stonehenge is actually free if you're a member of English Heritage or the National Trust (well, I mean included in your membership and you don't have to pay more). I'm visiting for the first time next week (I have been before, but parked on the roadside and peeked through the fence... I don't think you can do that anymore!)
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels Год назад
Are you Lisa Go Cotswolds? Since I'm not on Facebook anymore, I miss everybody's posts... I'm surprised you have never been to Stonehenge officially! Yes, they have massively changed the set up of how you park and visit the site now. It's actually quite a hassle. But you make a good point about the fees. I do agree it's a good idea to get an English heritage membership or national trust if you're going to be in Britain a while, and then plan several places you can visit to take advantage of the membership! Last year we did that, and also joined Historic Houses. Big fun! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers! Dara

Dara. Another great video. I agree with you. I’ve lived in the UK for 70 plus years. I’ve driven past it a few times and never felt the need to stop. Never knew the cost but there's always seem to be too many people there and some years ago the stones have been fenced off to keep from vandalism and graffiti. I prefer Avebury as well. In Wales we have some ancient Cromlech’s which marked very ancient graves of usually a prominent chief or prince. A Cromlech usually consist of two tall upright stones and a large bridging stone across the top. Quite a few in Pembrokeshire.

Well, Dara, your Rollright Stones story is much more compelling than a distant fleeting view of Stonehenge from the A303! Sounds like a must-visit. (Long before the M4 motorway was built, I used to spend a day driving to Bristol via the A303 and stop for a rest in the layby near the then free subway entrance to Stonehenge. Can't recall many visitors then! How times have changed! Here's hoping the Rollright Stones retain their secluded peace and quiet.)

We did enjoy the visit. Your know we have some ancient stones here in the States too. Just didn't lift the tons of weight and set them on their side! Other than Scotty at Coral Castle in Florida. That was an old hermit who loved the "Stonehenge" stories and thought he'd duplicate the probable means of construction. By himself and only at night. The winches were hidden from view. Amazing place if your ever in southern Florida.

That said, they are about the right height to sit on and there were some quite nice views because it's on a hillside.

Am I the first to disagree with this. It’s like saying don’t go to Buckingham Palace try Kensington Palace it’s less busy. If you’d said go to Avebury instead then it would be difficult to disagree. I seem to remember reading the henge is actually free your paying for parking and transport. Also you can stand in the stone circles on the soloists most who visit then don’t pay they park elsewhere and walk to the stones. I should go to the Rollrights sometime it’s somewhere we’d both want to do (Teresa). M&T

Feel free to disagree with me! I just like taking the Mick out of Stonehenge... and to be fair, I did say in the video that Avebury is better than the Rollrights. Honestly, I was just trying an experiment to see if a Clickbait thumbnail would work. It didn't, so lesson learnt 🤣🤣🤣

How can anyone not be impressed by Stonehenge? It's not just a pile of stones, look at the skill of building it, look at the uprights and lintels. The Bluestones were brought from the Preseli hills in Pembrokeshire, many miles away. Why? Also, look at it's alignment with the heel stone and the solstices. Now tell me it's boring.

It's not boring but expectations are raised too high so the reality tends to disappoint.

@@MagentaOtterTravels I visited a few years ago in January so it wasn't crowded, I got in free on my NT and CADW card. How can't you be impressed by the stones and lintels and the fact that the Bluestones were brought from the Preseli hills in South Wales, many miles away or why the heel stones were aligned with the solstices? Don't you find the history fascinating and what the beliefs of the builders were? Don't forget how old it is.

@@jillhobson6128 I do think that history is amazing! I just think that the current set up makes things over priced and inconvenient. It's like saying London isn't worth visiting. Of course it is! But if it's the ONLY thing you see in England, you missed out on an awful lot!!!

Depends on when you go. £26.30 on peak dates. They don't mention how much they charge for parking, so probably enough to make your eyes water. Want to see the summer solstice? You can't. It's closed on that day.
