Hearing those stories and seeing the pictures from pre-stonewall was so meaningful?? like, all I've ever heard about were the raids and violence and then to see this where lgbtq people were living almost out in the open. Learning about them walking up the street and living together made me tear up cause I wish we were taught the good parts of our history too. Our history is not all tragedy, there's so much love and life there

What do you think a community means? It is what was between the arrests, beatings, riots ... If you haven´t seen it maybe it's because you didn´t want to pay attention before. Anyway, they protected each other against the police and homophobic citizens. Don´t idealize it, some of them lived out in the open, yes, specifically in parks at the age of 12, so I would say that love arose from the tragedy.

The moment they started booing Sylvia Rivera my heart fell apart. Just hearing the audience shocked me. While not trans, I was so pained to see people who were fighting for the same rights for the LGBTQ+ community but couldn't reach a point of understanding with those also a part of it. But acknowledging and discussing the development of the LGBTQ+ community in regards to transphobia, racism, and its overall growth allows me to fully appreciate the community that is today and what it will be in the future. I'm proud to be a part of this lively and diverse community and thank you for presenting such a informative and moving documentary.

Myles, probably bc Stonewall is not accurate history. It’s an important symbol, but it didn’t go down at all like this vid says it did, and it had nothing to do with gay rights at the time. It was about trans rights only. Both are important, but today there are tiny thinkers who fuse both narratives together because it’s too complex for them to think or care about.

1:53 that’s straight facts. As hard as the queer community has it right how, especially trans people with all this legislation getting passed in red states, transphobic harassment, families with trans kids having to seek asylum in other states etc... we have to remember we could have it MUCH worse. If it wasn’t for those who came before us, we wouldn’t have ever seen gay marriage get protected and honored on a federal level for example. And many other things. We don’t go doomer because we recognize that those who come after us will reap the benefits of the fights we fight today. Just like we reap the benefits of the sacrifices and fights that those before us have fought, earned, gotten locked up for, and literally died for. Sometimes in life, you plant trees. Not because you wish to see that tree grow yourself. But so others who come after you may rest in that tree’s shade. Stonewall planted a seed. Of a massive oak tree. Today, we rest in the shade of that oak tree: Pride Parades. Nothing but respect to them. Never give up or go doomer. NO MATTER WHAT! Because it’s on us to be the ones future queer and trans people look back on 50 years from now and go “holy SHIT they were fuckin BASED!” (For lack of a better word). Never let depression or bigotry get you down. Be the person future generations look back on with pride. Be the one others look back on and go “damn they were fuckin awesome. I want to be like them someday too.”

To all my "human beings" friends, I came from a time when we built "stonewall and Terrence Higgins Trust one word that really sticks in my mind "queer?" back then, we had "queer-bashing" can we all not use the term "queer" it was such a hurting word back then, "gay" is much better xx

"That word" has been reclaimed. That is the Q in LGBTQ. Q is not really "questioning" though some use the Q it for that. Queer is/can be used if someone in LGBTQ community has more than 1 of the "markers" within the LGBTQ community. It is complicated and I do not wish to offend anyone if i don't explain right.Queer can be when someone is gay or lesbian but also is gender nonconforming. it can also be used if someone is bi, gender nonconforming, maybe L, G or B and also androgenous. I think the youngest members of our community are most comfortable with it or those of us who LOOK younger than we appear. It is NEVER intended as disrespectful. Why would anyone within our community wish to be hurtful to our own????? It is said frequently in our bars and businesses. It is used a lot in television series like "QUEER AS FOLK"!!!!! And is used in "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"....Now, if someone who identifies as "straight" says it, it MIGHT be an attack. (Just make sure that "straight" is not simply trying to be "hip and cool". Some people mean well but still can be ignorant. Then we educate them.) If a "straight" calls us Q out of hate, Then all bets are off! If i heard a straight use it hatefully I might wanna feed that person a "knuckle sandwich".......
@roberthamilton5600

May I just say a big heartfelt thanks for educating myself, I truly sign up to all you said and more over a "straight person" using the term in a hateful way. Thank you @@LeathurRokk

The term "queer" has been largely reclaimed by the community, and within the community it is no longer used as a slur. People use the word to describe themselves for a variety of reasons. For some, it's an alternative to giving their sexuality or gender a linear, restrictive definition. Also, some people feel more comfortable using "queer" rather than "gay" because there are much more people in the community than people who solely identify as homosexual. Of course, as with many words, it depends on the intention of the person using it. If someone goes "Hey, I'm queer", they are describing themselves and therefore not intending to be offensive. If a person outside the community uses it, and uses it to hurt or insult, they're of course using the word incorrectly.

Never believe “it all began with Stonewall.” It didn’t. It began years before in cities and small towns across the country. Stonewall was about Trans Rights, only, and while that’s hugely important, the real gay movement was “gay liberation” that started in early 60s, and before that it was the Matachine Society in San Francisco that published political magazines and our first political strategies to change laws and open doors for all LGBTQ people. And before that, it started during WWII when US sailors from small towns in Nebraska and Indiana found each other when serving in the war. They refused to go back to their farms and small towns because they found community together, so thousands planted roots in New York (Greenwich Village) and San Francisco (Castro) and started businesses and began to be respected teachers, plumbers, physicians, carpenters, and businesspeople with our own salons, bars, village restaurants, retail stores, transforming pocket cultures in cities the same way across the country. But if people need a dramatic symbol, (and there were plenty before and besides Stonewall), then it’s fine to pretend it all started here. But then, that wouldn’t be the truth. Stonewall was an important bar and later benchmark for trans people, but it was not about gays and lesbians fighting for everyday rights to keep our jobs, rent apartments, and live with dignity. It was hard work, everyday, hard political and culture-shifting work, with no parades and fake fucking on floats down 5th Avenue. It wasn’t fun, it was survival, mostly underground. But having a community in every butch bar, gay bar and piano bar in NYC made these places safe homes.

What's with the transphobia, pal?
@noaheinstein2369
@noaheinstein2369 5 лет назад
Dave102693, LOL. Not transphobic but love authentic history. Would it be OK with you to read about, or watch clips, that claim the Civil Rights movement with MLK was really all about gay rights? Would it be OK for gay people to steal everything MLK stood for, just because it confuses you to realize they were actually 2 different movements with 2 different strategies and times? It’s kinda wrong to conflate the Stonewall riot and it’s trans movement, with the gay rights movement because at the time they were not the same. It’s hugely important to separate the facts and events of real history before it all gets revised as something it never was. Each history is critical, but they were not the same except to outsiders who couldn’t see the difference. Each stands on its own, and each built on the success of the one before it. Just like gays built on MLK’s success at consciousness raising about black dignity and black rights.
@noaheinstein2369
@noaheinstein2369 5 лет назад
Mae Hovland, yes, much of what you were told could be generally accepted as true at the time, but of course much has been conflated by amateur LGBTQI historians in search of a plot with favored heroes, timelines, etc. I like your capacity for thinking outside the popular box. Think that much of the confusion is around labels that once had different meanings than they do today, as well as the fact that before the 1950s there was really no way to publicly organize a ham sandwich if it involved homosexuals. LOL. I mean there was nothing but contempt and confusion around the entire topic. Think this is why gay people and trans people often didn’t get along. Also there was no way for any 2 gay people to even know the other existed. Think about that. Wow. It changed in the late 50s I think, and by then public groups like Matachine Society and others like it were forming all over the country. But some groups in major cities had started back in 1920s. Still, I was a kid in the early 60s and remember seeing photos in the newspaper of a group of 20 gay people in rural Colorado who met around campfires and beer kegs in the countryside to find solidarity. The cops busted them and all their photos were plastered in the Denver Post, leading to all them being fired from their jobs, and most of the group were local teachers from small towns, and were married with kids. The follow up stories (hey I was glued to the story!) were truly horrific. One man was a doctor who committed suicide by gun, and the teachers were never able to get jobs again, of course, and abandoned by their spouses and kids. A really awful, horrible true story of only 1 early gay group that tried ‘public’ meetups. Anyway I always thought Sylvia’s other issues, as well as her Trans identity, made for a life of rage and narcissism, and all for good reasons. It seems the problems she encountered were as much about her several personality disorders and addictions as anything else. But these also made it possible for her to become a force to be reckoned with, whether constructively or not. So in that sense one could say the Trans movement needed her to pioneer. As to her saying that Stonewall was not “strictly” a transsexual or transvestite bar, I suppose that’s technically correct. But it’s like saying the NAACP is not strictly black people. I was a student in NYC at the time and all I remember was that Stonewall was a “transvestite” bar for drag queens, very much accepted like all the other gay bars downtown, but with its distinct draw for trans people just like the Warehouse had a distinct draw to rough trade at the time, and like other bars drew the suits, jocks, college preps, etc. All the bars, no exceptions, were owned by the Mafia so there were big payoffs for protection. If you tried to open your own gay bar they burned you down. I’d disagree with your history teacher about Stonewall being the start of gay liberation movement. The gay rights political movement itself went back way before that. There were major gay marches (not to be confused with pride parades) in the early and mid 60’s certainly. NYC had plenty of rights marches long before Stonewall, and so did Philadelphia, SF, Boston etc. You could say “well these weren’t really for gay legal rights and equality in all aspects of culture” but I’d push back on that. They were mostly about gays being fired from govt jobs in cities after they got exposed in the workplace. I marched in 2 of them and I know what the agendas were in both cases. It was not just to help gay people be comfortable in strait culture or whatever. But maybe that’s not what you mean. As in all political movements, yes it’s true that gays and lesbians didn’t want Trans and drag queens in the movement at the time. That sounds cruel today, and I get that. Yes they were welcome as individuals like everyone else in the movement, but there were careful strategies that prohibited them from sabotaging the movement for a separate agenda. It’s very hard to explain this to younger people who think we were cruel to exclude them. The hope was they would create their own movement for Trans rights, and that finally happened with Stonewall. One has to remember that, at the time, drag queens sucked all the oxygen out of the room and grabbed all the media attention just because of their glorious outfits and glitter attire. LOL. It sounds awful, but strategies were clear at the time that no case could be made for gay rights could be won in the public square if the message was conflated. MLK had very much the same strategy is banning white or black gay people from the civil rights movement. As cruel as that sounds today, I think he was absolutely correct in his strategic planning. The focus had to be civil rights for black people, not to be confused with civil rights for black gay people. I know. Sounds homophobic today, but it wasn’t. Having black gay people marching for their rights in the midst of civil rights for black people (only) would have sabotaged the larger mission and no doubt sunk the cause of civil rights for blacks generally. Several of Kings personal friends were out to him and asked him to unite their causes, but he refused to unite or give them an inch in the civil rights marches. I think the Gay vs Trans movements were very much the same in the early years, even after Stonewall. Of course today we can agree that civil rights are the larger cause for all human beings with no discrimination as to gender identity, sexual orientation, color, etc. anyway, thanks for your open mindedness and careful communication.

@@noaheinstein2369 Very interesting! Some of the ways you described things sound different from how I've learned them but I definitely don't think that means what I learned was wrong or the way you experienced it was wrong either. Of course any part of history isn't experienced the same way by everyone involved, so there's never gonna be one true way of looking at things! One minor thing to clarify is that I wasn't saying gay rights activism started at Stonewall, it's just that from what I've read historians tend to group the activism into the homophile movement in the 50s and 60s and the gay liberation movement in the 70s. But that's just a way of describing general trends in history looking back at it and doesn't necessarily describe the actual experiences of individual people. They normally talk about the movements as generally having two different approaches to their activism, but of course the gay liberation movement continued a lot of work that happened during the homophile movement and many important activists were involved in both. I wonder if this framework fits with the way you experienced things or not? Also I think there's value in using our stories about Stonewall and other queer activism to guide our activism going forwards. At this point Stonewall is as much a part of our cultural folklore as it is a part of our history and the stories we tell about it help to shape our cultural values. At any rate thank you so much for sharing your perspective and your experiences, it was really very interesting to read! I'm really interested in learning about queer history, so if you have any other stories to share, I would love that!

Mae Hovland, not sure if you saw this yet but it’s close to what we’re both trying to say. Also, hope you’re following the big news out of Botswana. Did you see how their movement positioned themselves? In my opinion this is the kind of politics and world strategy our LGBTQ movement should be supporting, right? One could wish more gay people could step away from their narcissism long enough to get more serious about the persecution and injustice done to gay people globally, but at this point in time that doesn’t seem possible. I hope, with more complete integration over time, the problem of narcissism in the LGBTQ COMMUNITY will change into a path for healing the disorder at younger developmental levels. But again it’s just my hope. Granted, we don’t know all the causes of narcissism in personality development, but I think it may be diminished if kids are free in their early years to integrate the larger world into the developing concept of self/others. Perhaps this was not always possible until recent years, but now there will be no excuse. Going forward, this issue must be addressed because it impacts the LGBTQ community at so many levels. What are your thoughts on this? As to your thoughts that history telling is OK when it’s “symbolic,” even fabricated, instead of true, I’d push back on that. Especially when so many gays and lesbians still alive today look at these fake histories and laugh (hurts too much to cry) because we know the larger truth. I’m just saying that, if it’s still possible, the truth needs to come boldly forward before it’s completely trashed by more narcissistic people who love believing fantasies about themselves. Anyway, here’s the video so enjoy, it’s a breath of fresh air, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S7jnzOMxb14.html

Two words that should never be used in relation to LGBTQIA+ community are TOLERANCE and ACCEPTANCE. Tolerance implies that something is wrong but hetero-normative society will put up with us. And acceptance - if you don't comprehend that we exist, get out of our way because the issue is yours, not ours.

time to fight back If you are gay or know someone who is, this is important information! Sexual orientation is determined in the womb during fetus development. Various hormones are introduced at specific times to accomplish this .The fetus plays no part in this process. A person is, therefore, born with a predetermined attraction. It is, therefore, not a choice & consequently not a sin & not immoral. It is a natural expression of mammals & found commonplace in nature. Intelligent research in this area clearly explains this process. If you are truly interested in truth, based on knowledge, the book Gay, Straight & the Reason Why by Dr. Simon Levay shows this with numerous research articles. If you want to understand the truth & have respect for yourself & others this book will help. It also has, unlike the bible written over 2000 years by men that had no understanding of science, an extensive bibliography. I strongly recommend the book. The public must be exposed to facts & knowledge. It is an obligation for those who the truth & can defend it. Don’t let the religious pull you down to their level of ignorance. Peace

And just to think, people were naive to think that nature just made us only different colors. It is obvious to all now, that nature also put a rainbow within us too. I think it takes a very brave person to step out of the box society has placed them in and show the world who they really are and in doing so, finding that they are not alone after all. But most importantly, that they loved.

im sorry to say this, but its never going to be finished. The logic behind intersectionality is to actually pit people against other people to divide the masses and keep us distracted. There is an evil program to lower the age of consent to 16 yrs, or sometimes younger. People really need to take another looks at trans, and being trans. IMO there are very, very rare cases where surgery is needed. Gender dysphoria is real as well, but it is obviously leaves as time goes on and people change. Look at how many people that are in transition right now. There were not so many people scared to tell people, there are of course some, but the numbers don't back up the 5000 percent increase in trans surgeris

I really appreciated that they talked about Marsha and Sylvia and how the early lgbt+ movement excluded trans people, and how they talked about intersectionality in general. I do not understand how a community of people who know what it's like to be oppressed would oppress other people within that same group. :(

Because humans are the wretched species, and Americans MUST have someone to look down on, thus they marginalize others of the same cohort by pretending they are of a higher class. America and her foolishness.

The movement started out as getting equal rights for people with different sexual orientation than heterosexuality. Transsexuality has nothing to do with sexuality, but rather gender identity. They do not fit into the original category for which the movement was started. Logical. But since when have the trans camp been known for their logic?

truth If you are gay or know someone who is, this is important information! Don’t let the religious pull you down to their level of ignorance. Peace

Any form of oppression is wrong. When Rosa Parks stood up in 1955 & said no the the southern white guy who wanted her seat she started the civil rights movement right then. Blacks boycotted the bus runs & no one was riding the busses so they had to make a change. Thanks be to God for Rosa Parks. When the Irish came here from the old country & had to face NO IRISH NEED APPLY signs, they too had to stand up & fight to bring about change. When Henry Ford hired thugs to beat the hell out of guys who where trying to get the Union in Ford, he too had to finally give up. His own wife Clara said to him one morning while having breakfast, "how long are you going to continue with this violence & bloodshed?" Some guys lost their lives over it sadly. That is what it took for Henry Ford to stop & let the Union in. His loving & lovely wife, Clara Ford. Same thing with Stonewall Riots. Gay people were minding their own business. Not bothering anyone & yet were harassed by the New York Police Department again & again. They got sick of it & fought back. Now some of those same cops who did the harassing (who are very up in age now) have admitted they were wrong. They actually have apologized for their wrongness. As John Fitzgerald Kennedy said on June 11, 1963, "this nation will not be free until ALL of its citizens are free."
