Did control of this small town in West Virginia (Virginia until 1863) really change hands 56 times during the Civil War? Kris White of the American Battlefield Trust details all things Romney, West Virginia from the spot of one of Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters during his Shenandoah Campaign.
Look for our numerous videos on RU-vid over the next week, and special thanks to all the donors who helped make this trip possible!

General Jackson is my 3rd great cousin on his mother's side Julia B Neale Woodson. My great great grandmother Mary E Winn (Walton) was his 2nd cousin. I am a member of MOSB.

I suppose you mean 3rd cousin, as there's no such thing as a great cousin, 3rd or otherwise.

Have visited Romney a few times, very interesting place. That whole area is steeped in history. I am a Buckeye born and bred and joined the Civil War Trust many years ago. I contribute to the American Battlefield Trust regularly, though modestly due to my circumstances. Preserving our History is very important!

I had a total of 4 ancestors that served in Virginia regiments on both sides. One great great grandfather served in the 7th (West) Virginia and was killed at Antietam, and another great great grandfather served in the 4th (West) Virginia and lost a leg at Vicksburg. On the other side I had 2 great great uncles. One was in the 1st Virginia (Irish) Battalion and was listed as missing after Antietam and the other was in the 36th Virginia. He was the only one who came through the war unscathed.

I had family in both armies as well, as well as Mayor Beckham of Harper's Ferry (killed by John Brown's raiders). Two brothers (both Union) and a cousin (Confederate). One of the brothers (Ohio regiment, the specific one is debated due to a transfer that occurred in July 1863) and the cousin (Lt in a Virginia Artillery unit) fought each other in Gettysburg. They both survived the battle but the Lt., a direct ancestor of mine, would be killed at Yellow Tavern, the same battle as Jeb Stuart.

Still amaze me distance they covered in very short time. Tough men. Stonewall himself fall asleep few times on horseback not uncommon on all them walking or riding fall asleep. Stonewall & a apple tree getting stuck was funny 1.

There are only two monuments that contend for the title of "first", one in Romney and one in Cheraw, SC. The Cheraw monument was dedicated on July 26, 1861, the Romney monument was dedicated exactly 2 months later. Technically the Romney monument is first because it was inscribed to "southern rights", the Cheraw monument was inscribed later. There was a Federal ban on inscribing monuments in the south, but the West Virginians were sneakier and did it secretly.

Please don't tell this. The liberals will come after them. Quite few of my ancestors have CSA information on their tombstones and I am worried that they will try to destroy them.

@@DannyWalker247 Yes! Very sad when ot gets home here in WV.. Thats outside stuff normally.. u know... But the ADL, and SPL have Targeted sites around the Nation to attack, shame, and change into something that is not, or is to be forgotten... We The People are going to have to fight it out eventually if we continue to be victimized..

@@DannyWalker247would you prefer it renamed Donald Trump's 1-6 insurrection? Traitor is a traitor imo. We shouldn't hold traitors to the country we live in to such high standards. The winners rewrite history. Remember?
