"Theoretically I have little interest in a show about a stoic, pure, gentlemanly rodeo cowboy, but this show was beautifully done in all departments. Ambitious executive producer Leslie Stevens really showed greatness in his first TV series.
Jack Lord never gave a better, more heart-felt performance than as Stoney Burke, but Warren Oates almost stole the show as his shifty but lovable best friend Ves Painter. Jack Lord played Stoney as quietly noble, while Warren Oates played Ves as the opposite of quietly noble. They made a great team. Bruce Dern was also memorable as another of Stoney's friends. Three superb actors.
Dominic Frontiere's rousing theme music was impossible not to respond to.
Conrad Hall's black and white photography was stunningly beautiful, turning "Stoney Burke" into a moody noir rodeo drama.

This episode, of "Stoney Burke", was an unsold pilot, for a prospective, TV series titled "Border Town" (aka "Border Patrol") starring Bill Smith and Cesare Danova as American and Mexican, law enforcement counterparts, at the border. During the 1963 TV season, the "Burke" series ran a number, of these unsold pilots, as series episodes, with stars, such as Michael Parks, J.D. Cannon, Henry Silva, and Dick Clark.

Never knew that we can consider that WARREN OATES & BRUCE DERN had THIER OWN TV SERIES with JACK LORD even tho they are CO STARRING!!!!!!! And we forget those """other""" western types EARL HOLLIMAN & ANDREW PRINE also had THIER OWN tv series called the FAR COUNTRY back in MID 1960s ****

What philistine chose to colorize this 60s western shot by Conrad Hall, the same master of TV noir who also filmed and lit Leslie Stevens' first season Outer Limits? The contrasting gray scales and shadows that gave those shows their unique allure of mystery and suspense are lost this way.
