3 you didnt mention is to teep the kicking leg, take the low kick and kick back (counter tho not a stop), or put weight on the leg they are kicking (usually the front leg) and move the leg forward in a lunge so it flexes the muscles before they kick it.

I personally like bringing my heel back to the glutes or my back leg when checking so they either hit the hardest part of my knee or they completely miss or it slides on my thighs for an easy catch

Great video! What I learn in class is invaluable like this also. But, if someone is trying to kick me on the street/self defence situation, then I'm 100% aiming to check that kick by pointing my knee so that they dont attempt it again and/or they break their leg in the process. Train sport, think street. 🤓

I have fallen in love with the pendulum step. I’m currently trying to engineer a happy solution for checking low kicks and getting the desired mobility I want. I’ve come up with stationary bouncing and just bouncing my lead leg when I’m at the edge of range. I guess it’s tough to incorporate all of these measures but I’m sure the answer is just practice. Any other strategies?

Gabriel. When i am lifting my lead leg up or bouncing the lead leg and my opponent advances. It seems hard to move back from there. What is the footwork for that? Or the defense or counter to stop this
@timothychang4166
@timothychang4166 8 дней назад
Hopefully Gabriel will answer but if I could add one suggestion it would be to utilize front (lead leg) teep / side teep to jam or intercept them. If they are too close long knee or lead elbow also works well depending on your rule set. In terms of strictly defense moving your lead leg back into the opposite stance and utilizing a long guard also is quite effective (long guard with power hand forward in the switched stance)
@cheeks7050
@cheeks7050 8 дней назад
You have to get good at reading body language so that you pick the right action, it simply IS hard to move back if you pick your leg up to check.

Time your lead teep, intercept the blitz with the teep then pounce
@looFA_4
@looFA_4 8 дней назад
When your weight is on your rear leg moving backwards in an effective manner is simply more difficult. Aside from the points mentioned earlier, you can also pivot laterally toward the side of your lead leg to create a different angle. Just remember that it's easier to move in the direction of the 'weightless' leg. You move by pushing in the opposite direction you want to go in. If your weight is going straight down like it does when you bounce that lead leg, it's hard to move in any direction except up and forwards. It's just Newton's third law of motion if you're familiar with physics.

I want to start kickboxing but I don't have any kickboxing gym around me so I want to do at home but the problem is that I can't raise my left leg up for kicks and my stance orthodox. But I can kick with my right leg freely, even head kicks as I don't weigh much so can anyone tell me how to kick with my left leg? If I try kicking from my left leg then I lose balance and my right leg slips and I fall down(last time my right leg slipped and I fell on my elbow🤡🤡)

Is it good to move the weight on your front leg to eat that kick if your legs are conditioned? I think guys in Kyokushin and Dutch style kickboxing sometimes do it
@discipleaj
@discipleaj 8 дней назад
Yeah we do that too where I train, but only to build body armour because the fact is you can't always avoid being leg kicked so you've got to have resilience. When you put your weight on, you turn into their shot as it also builds torque for your counter shots. You'll need to adjust a bit for orthodox vs southpaw scenarios though, but the principles are the same.

Regarding checking the kicks, something that Ernesto hoost utilized, was to point the knee towards the chin. Doing it right, the area of the knee is much smaller making the area sharper when the chin is being hit. That way he managed to make several of his opponents hurt themselves badly from kicking.

kicking with the top of your foot, especially without shoes and especially for bone-contact, is too likely to break your foot-bones. I only teach it as a way to get beginners learning distance, angle, balance and hip-ankle rotation, and "touch" or point sparring. It's not intended for actual hard contact,, cause it doesn't work worth a hoot for such stuff.

Hey Gabe this check worked rly well for me, I realized I can use it from my old boxing stance which normally kept weight on the front leg. When I started in MMA Id get leg kicked alot but besides that the stance worked rly well for head movement keeping the body safe and punches. I'm gonna give it a try again because I'm not good at head movement in a Muay Thai stance.

The problem with checking alot is that if you always check, your opponent(if any good) gonna start build of that and fake the kick and come with something else and hurt you. Now you basically is fucked because you are standing there stationary. So, I personally think just moving away from it or timing a blitz punch is the best defense against kicks and stay with moving.

That's why it's important to not be overreactive to twitches. Switch your defense around a bit so they don't get to feint you out but you feint them out instead. Sometimes when they settle down just move angles or range and they'll have to reset and lose their rhythm.
