About The Chloe Sanctuary:
Operated by Executive Director Don Scott, The Chloe Sanctuary for Parrots and Cockatoos is a 501(c) nonprofit charity dedicated to the empowerment of captive parrots and cockatoos, and public awareness. A permanent bird sanctuary, we rescue but do not rehome birds.
Each parrot or cockatoo that comes to our bird sanctuary has a home for life. Bird rescue is a 24/7 job. Parrot rescue is challenging because a parrot or cockatoo does not belong in a domestic household. They are wild animals. Most people do not have the resources to take in a bird, but anyone can still help parrots in need by giving a like and subscribe to a parrot youtuber.
By following our bird channel, you will learn about basic bird care and you will learn how to take care of a parrot. If you have a pet parrot, pet cockatoo or another pet bird, you should watch our bird videos. Sometimes I make funny parrot videos or talking parrot videos, but most of them are educational.
Bird care or parrot care is not like looking after a cat or dog, birds are not mammals and their needs are very different. Taking care of a bird can be a great joy in your life if you have the skills. The Chloe Sanctuary parrot channel will teach you about bird training and parrot training using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), reward training, positive reinforcement, and more. In our Cockatude Cockatoos with Attitude video series you will see our moluccan (seram), triton (sulfur-crested), and umbrella cockatoos (umbrella is the white parrot). Each episode has a different topic. In some you will see a parrot playing, a cockatoo talking, a parrot dancing, or other funny parrot antics. My funny birds love it in the aviary. Cecil bird dancing is quite the sight and everyone loves a dancing bird. In other videos we talk about avian vet care. A parrot talking is lots of fun, but remember not all of them do it. A talking parrot is a novelty which can wear off quickly. Never buy a parrot expecting it to talk.
Parrots talking like humans can be very entertaining though. Peaches talks very well, as does Lucy. Lucy says pretty bird and Peaches says hello. Peaches voice is very sweet, but a parrot voice can be loud or quiet. A parrot song can be beautiful or raucous.

Thank you for your work, devotion & patience. If you have a chance, everyone of us accidentally does the opposite of our intentions.Because we’re imperfect humans, like birds are also imperfect creatures. In this video, when talking about positive punishment & reinforcement with Salamandar on your right arm, he began bobbing, chirping loudly as you stated was undesirable. Without thinking (we all do things unconsciously) here, you positively reinforced the behavior, changing your tone of voice, positively, looking him eye to eye up close or saying “yeah!”(14”&21:30”). I think we all should video ourselves so we can pick up on the things we dont realize we’re doing. Ideas on this? How to undo unintended actions? For how long and how many repetitions could be useful to noobs? Reminding people each birds learning time is different.Lordy, I hope we have fewer & fewer noob exotic pet “owners”. Its probably also good to keep reminding people the majority of bird people have a transient relationship to these creatures, eventually looking to re home them, with or without damages as their interest & attention or time waned. TYVM.

We are always fixing the little mistakes we make in behavior conditioning. It's one of the reasons I like Dr. Zelig's Animal training 101 course so much. One of the best animals trainers on the planet she also teaches you how to fix those little mistakes you make. Even the big ones. animaltraining.us This is where to learn how to train any animal. Dr. Zeligs will show you exactly how to shape behavior.

My umbrella cockatoo was rescued from an abusive home. My sister was donated the bird, and due to her vicious biting anyone within like 5 feet and constant screaming she got rid of her. This bird liked nobody at all. When it was on it's cage one time, it flew on my shoulder. Had a broken wing though. I thought it would snap, but she was just the most affectionate thing in the world the first time I saw her. She instantly trusted me 100%, listened to me, groomed me, and got territorial. Why do birds instantly pick people?

I know I'm two years late, but it might have been due to your body language + previous associations with people who looked like you. They might have associated your body language/tone of voice/etc with someone in that household who had been kind to them, which made you seem like the only trustworthy person in a group of dangerous people

@blacky_Ninja
@blacky_Ninja 2 года назад
@@kandykane2160 Yeah, budgies are a good mix of what people expect of a parrot and handability. Just make sure you have a big enough cage and/or a Room for them to free fly and lots of toys and love. At first they might need some time to get used to you and their new surrounding, so not rushing it is probably the best attitude you can offer them. 😊 Also if you plan to get only one (which s not advised, but you can do it of course) expect them to be very clingy. They NEED company, so either you get them another bird friend, or you‘ll have to spend a lot of time with them.

Living with cockatoos can be challenging if you haven’t had any training. Reward training is essential to dealing with problems such as this. I can’t sprinkle magic fairy dust and solve the problem but I can give you a few clues. wait until your bird stops making a sound or makes a sound that you like before entering the room. Keep in mind though you might enter the room at the exact moment the bird starts making the vocalization you don’t like. At that point, you are reinforcing that vocalization. One way to think of it is: you get what you reward.

@@ChloesanctuaryOrg thank you I received coco from a lady whom just couldn’t care for her anymore after 35 years she had owned her since she was 6 mos old . Coco is very sweet nice beyond normal ! Her and I just hit it off ! However the squawking has really become overwhelming for my self . My neighbor said she didn’t quit the hole time I was gone about 2 hours . I felt terrible for coco not to mention the neighbor. I understand the the reward training. I just feel like maybe I wasn’t the right choice for coco ??? Once again thank you for your reply and advice ! Have a wonderful day your amazing with birds !!!

Can you use these methods for the relatives of cockatoo's called Cockatiels? I was wondering if this channel is just for cockatoo's or any kind of parrot species.

I am amazed, & I don’t know if anyone else sees it. Sir, you are discussing how to, or how to NOT “pet” your birds. Nobody wants to stimulate hormones! Yet, in that same breath, you are petting the birds down the back, on tail feathers & under wing. Huh? The screaming bird ( very cute): you explain not to + reinforce by accident, by giving attn. well, in next breath you kiss the bird on beak, bounce him a bit & tell him how pretty he is. THAT IS positive reinforcement! So, no bad will or anything & I appreciate all you do & enjoy your videos. But I wonder if this vid is actually a “ don’t do this” video. Thank you.💕👍😘🦜

I hope you understand that some of these birds are mated to me. One bird, for example, has six fused vertebrae in her neck and cannot preen herself. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule and I mention them frequently. If I were to mention them in every video most of my videos would be just about petting. Since the average attention span of most people on RU-vid according to statistics is about four minutes, you see the problem. If you are a practitioner of applied behavior analysis and have done a functional analysis on each bird then you know what works and what does not. If you are the average person who has a bird with no background in psychology and behaviorism, you are playing with fire. Dealing with a bird that is mate territorial can be dangerous and is often beyond the ability of the layman. I’m glad you enjoy the videos.

Question if I may please, I’ve read & have been advised not to touch parrots anywhere beside their head & beak as not to bring on hormonal behaviors. What is your theory on this? I see you stroke them on their backs etc. TYSM!

In the video the Cockatoos nuzzle against your side and click their beaks. Is this okay to let your cockatoo do, or is it another form of mating behavior? We just got a female cockatoo and she was do this with my wife, but when I left the room and came back in she flew at me and made me leave the room. This seemed like mate territoriality, but we've only had her a day. Thanks, and I love your videos they are very informative!

Beak clacking normally is not an issue. It may be a precursor to mating behavior but is not mating behavior itself. Always keep in mind that each bird is a study of one. This link may help. Most of the articles at this site are well written. If you’re cockatoo is from Indonesian descent ignore the daylight warnings. Indonesia is equatorial. www.google.com/amp/s/studentswithbirds.wordpress.com/2014/02/25/hormones-and-your-parrot-the-triggers-and-what-to-do/amp/

I just adopted a Too from a rescue. He's so afraid of people and backs away. He seems to have taken a liking to me as when I leave the room, he'll squawk until I come back, but he still won't step up. I've only had him for two weeks, so I think he's come pretty far already. I have 16 years of previous mistreating to undo. I know he feels safe here because of his mannerisms, but do you think it's just a matter of time before he steps up? He was on me once, and that was the day I got him. Now he just prefers to stay on his tree.

He would drum his beak on the floor of his cage I am retired so he was always allowed out of his cage. 3 years later he is a warm noisy sometimes an affectionate bird. Please persevere with your bird with constant kind treatment he will reward you.

My neighbor has a Umbrella Cockatoo and is familiar with me. The 2 year old parrot 🦜 walked over an into my lap. I began petting her and for about 3 minutes she kinda did a head up regurgitating behavior?? I hear this is a good sign of affection ?
@ChloesanctuaryOrg
@ChloesanctuaryOrg 5 лет назад
It is mating behavior. This is not necessarily a good sign. If a parrot becomes mated to you it will exhibit mate territoriality. Unless you are familiar with techniques to deal with this the results will not be pleasant. They are not like us, they are different, better. They will defend their mates with their lives. If you don’t know what that means don’t pet them improperly. That means do not pet them anywhere but their heads and for no longer than five minutes at a time. A certified trainer can work around these issues but the average person is just looking to create a dangerous and unhappy situation. naturalencounters.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Understanding_Parrot_Behavior_Naturally-Steve_Martin.pdf
