To Treat the timber? Burn it, scorch the surface all the way around, brush off after burning. then if you added an oil ,that wood will last for decades :)

Thank you for showing a more reasonable price raised garden bed . I’m new to gardening and my first two beds I used treated wood and some untreated but stained it . I was worried about rotting. This is the nicest looking metal bed I've seen. Excellent. I love the idea of the wood frame across the top and the two tone metal finish on the corners. I think I would add a small wood diagonal across at the corners to keep the whole bed square, especially while moving it. Thank you very much for sharing this.

I had considered building some from the galvanized panels but I was going to build a 1x4 box around the top and bottom and use 2x4's in the corners but this way looks legit ..you also could cut some Dow rods into 12 inch stakes and drive the in the ground every couple feet to make sure it doesn't bow out

One extra advantage of a high sided bed is that if you fill it to just enough to grow a good root system you save soil plus you still have enough space above most growing Vegetables to put a shade cloth or bug screen across it and not cramp the growing plants.

I built similar with less effort from my original replaced garage doors. Just sink 4x4 lumber is the corners, use a cutoff wheel on the door for desired length, bolt the door sectionsyo the concreted 4x4s and fill the box with a good soil. Going on 5 years with these beds now

We tried that in the 1970’s. Manure, and or mild fertilizers or acidic soils dissolve the tin. We then tried galvanized nope did not last, galvalume nope. Good drainage, wood construction last longer. They all will fail after 7 years. So now we use brick and mortar problem solved. Thanks for trying tho.

Good paint also solve the problem. I use chicken, rabbit and horsemanure for my beds, no problem here. Perhaps metal acts differently here in Norway 😁😁😁😁😁

The issue is the acids in the dirt along with the oxidation being sealed off from air, the easiest way to fix it as with wood beds is get a good road base fabric, not the thin cheap weed stuff at garden centers, find you a misery supply that sells bulk/delivery planter soil, bark, sand, gravel, etc will sell nice "Road base fabric" will stop. The soil making contact and allow air and drying between wood and metal and dirt.

rocks? anything solid it would eventually come in contact with would stop it.. there is very little weight here.. except for the dirt inside of them, which are gonna create and outward force...not a downward force.. consider putting your shovel on the ground.. how many years before it sinks into the ground... MANY... just not enough weight to make it happen.

Great idea! Just one mistake is the description of the material you are using, It is galvanized or painted steel, not tin. Tin is becoming a rare element. The confusion arises from the thin sheet metal cans that food was packaged in which was actually tin-plated steel. Tin cans (plated steel) were discontinued around the 1950's but the misnomer continues. Now there is no tin at all in food cans, metal roofing, or metal siding. Someone commented whether tin was safe in a vegetable garden. Not to worry, this siding is steel, no tin is present.

@@melissajarvis4829 Earth worms you do want but there are other varieties which eat out the roots ( can't think of the name ) which you don't want. Place a beer can in each corner of the bed, have the opening at a 45 degree angle so sink the bottom of the can into the soil, have about 1/3rd filled with beer and leave, this will catch all slugs and snails and as mentioned planting some flowers will attract many air borne critters to them instead of the veg

We will be sticking the raised bed into the ground a few inches or more before we ever even start to fill it. That will help stabilize it. And we’ve never had a problem with it before doing it that way. It probably wouldn’t hurt to put some supports, but we’ve never found it necessary.

The tin is very sturdy. We also dig in the ground a few inches to help support the bottom. We haven't had any issues with our other beds.

Add many years to this and or wood planters is to line the insides with a good road base fabric, not the cheap weed stop at box stores, find where they sell sand,bark, gravel, soils, they will have big rolls of fabric you can buy at the foot , this stops soil from migrating into the rock , will provide a great barrier to keep soils from leaching acids and moisture to oxidize and rot metal and wood also allows air to breath. Its amazing who this will triple the life of your planters

You're still dealing with wood, which WILL rot and need replacing in a few years. Work smarter, not harder. It's loony tunes to muck around painting all that wood with linseed oil or anything else every year! And that will *not* work as well as you think anyway. Cattle panels lined with hardware cloth for the win. Just cut the panels up however you want, tie them together with aluminum wire ties meant for chain link fence, and tie 1/4" hardware cloth to the inside with zipties or whatever. Low cost, sturdy, easy to build, and impervious to the elements. You can just take them apart and move them in pieces easily if you ever need/want to for some reason. For the very easiest bed, just cut the panel in half lengthwise down to two pieces 16' long x about 2' wide, bend each into a square or circle, and tie the ends together and line them with the hardware cloth. BOOM you're done, you have two self-supporting beds approx 4' in diameter x two feet deep, at a cost of about $35 for both. No rotting wood, no pre-drilling, no screws, no painting or oiling, no maintenance, *none* of that nonsense. They will outlast everyone of us. Now if you just happen to have a pile of galvanized metal roofing laying around, by all means use it up! But just use steel t-posts, don't screw around building a bunch of wooden stuff to frame it.

Dystopia Gear hardware cloth? That will allow all the moisture on the sides to escape and be useless in my opinion. Plants would dry up super quick. Maybe sturdy.. maybe simple.. but I think the solid sides would be much better.

@@gregbrown5556 you're speaking from behind a keyboard. I'm speaking from years of experience with these beds. Circulation is a GOOD thing. My weather varies between weeks without any rain to weeks where it rains every day, and my beds hold plenty water during the dry spells but *never* get waterlogged. Ever hear of fabric pots and why they work? Check it out! If one lives in a truly arid climate they can always further "line" the bed with leaves, wood chips, cardboard etc.

I like what we call goat panels, the squares are smaller and they are a bit stronger than the cattle panels. I never thought of using them for a raised bed, thanks for the great idea. I might line them with weed cloth and add a top plate just to have something to sit on while working the beds.

@@TheRedhawke yes, the only reason I don't use goat panels is that they're noticeably more expensive than the cattle panels - because they just have more metal wire in them. But they should work great. Your weed/landscaping cloth idea will work fine too; I built a couple of mine with that as well as the hardware cloth and it certainly didn't hurt anything but I didn't really find any big advantage to it either. So it's entirely up to you.

@@Alan_CFA Unless you live in a truly arid area, wood rots, *period*. You can build something you know will fail if you want, and you can tell yourself you're going to paint/oil it every year. It's no skin off my nose. This is certainly not the worst raised bed design I've ever seen, but it's not the best either. And personally I grow for food, not to aesthetically please anyone with my beds. You think a box made of metal roofing is aesthetically pleasing to most people who care about that? OK then, but whatever, this isn't a fashion show, it's serious business. Especially now when so many people are already relying on their gardens to ease their food budget and/or make some extra money, and we're facing likely food shortages or rationing in the very near future. Why set out and KNOW you're going to have to rebuild something when you can just do it right the first time, for less money than almost any other design, and literally never worry about it again? Buy you some fancy schmancy pretty containers for the yard if you need to be aesthetically pleased by what your plants are growing in; I notice no one ever brings that silly noise up about old-fashioned ground beds. Only when they're trying desperately to tear apart a proven idea that just plain flat out works BETTER, essentially FOREVER, because they're upset about it for some odd reason. ;)

You need to put a rubber sheet between the metal and the dirt. This can leach heavy metals from the metal into the dirt. Then your plants can uptake those metals into your food. A rhino liner or just a rubber fabric.

We will be sticking the bed down into a few inches or more of soil before we ever start to fill it. But we’ve never had a problem with bowing in our other beds.

Look into hugelkultur gardening and fill it halfway or so with limbs and work your way up from biggest to smallest until you reach mulch size. Then only 6 or so inches of soil is needed. Much cheaper! I've got 2 made from logs that we wrapped with corrugated scrap tin and they work great. Very little soil needed and good airflow for the roots and as the limbs and brush rot down, it creates compost. I'm on my second season now and have carrots still growing in there that I planted last year.

I basically built the same metal bed. They look great and the roots of your plants love the warmth from the metal. Love your videos brother.

I just made 6 of these; 5 about 10x4 and one is 6x4. I used pressure-treated 2x4 lumber both on the side and as top pieces. They're all 16" high. it was a PIA dealing with sharp sheet metal (I've got 3 bad-aids on as I write this) but they should last a long time. I calculated I saved about $900 using metal roofing panels instead of more wood. Time will tell if they hold up, but right now, they're very, very sturdy. Thanks for sharing! Your design is the best one that I've seen on RU-vid. The commercial ones may assemble quicker, but I think yours will be stronger in the long run and I prefer DIY projects that I can tweak to my liking. I'm going to start looking for used roofing/siding right after posting this.
