Awesome episode Nathan! I've been commenting about how there are only so many ways you can manipulate audio...and most of those (if not all) are already in your DAW. I keep seeing the ads for "this plug-in is the best", or "this plug-in will take you to the next level" which seems like it's some pre-bundled eq/effect that smooths out what the engineer should have been able to accomplish without...by knowing what they are doing. Thank you for keeping it real!

I totally agree with you. I'm a logic pro user since 12 years, I do have 3rd party plugin but i mainly use stock plugins because it does the job that i want them to do. It's all about what you want to hear from your source.

One thing I would encourage is sound design. If you are like me where I for years only used the demo version of FL Studio to make music, then you will find you can make your own sounds. I use Logic Pro these days but what I learned in FL I transferred to Logic and learned what I had. I also for years made music on my android phone before I got my first iPhone. Learning what the programs can do, will help you understand how much you have to outsource. I don’t buy loops or midi packs but I buy sfx sounds sparingly. Most cases I have to use my own ugly high pitched voice to make custom sounds. Sometimes it takes days on 1 sound but I typically save money to use on ads, my household, or learning how to do something else. Most plugins that people buy are the same anyway. I know how to use Alchemy in Logic for 808’s but I purchased SubLab because the UI was a lot more organized and the the color contrasts was vivid making it easier to do what I fiddle in Alchemy for. Now you see how this video also works for a slight different perspective.

I buy synth plugins for features. I have and play a lot of them. For production plugins, I have a couple of EQ's and a couple of compressors. One limiter, two reverbs, one tape delay and one digital delay. However, it took me a long time to find the right ones, so over the past 10 years I've bought a lot of them....

This couldn’t come at a more perfect time. Just spent a bunch of money in the last week on plug-ins I thought would add to my Production. But shocker it didn’t so I’m not looking at any free or paid plugins. I’m sticking to just producing. Half the plug-ins I own I don’t use and that’s not an exaggeration. Also getting back to using stock plugins.

Logic's stock library is great, especially because it has lots of acoustic samples (which are most akin to Sampletank 3 imo), but unfortunately many DAWs don't provide a lot in that regard. I've had to spend thousands on both software and hardware synths, before I could make my own collection of samples that I feel confident about using for my music.

Plugin addiction is a real thing and I suffered from that. I am trying to recover. I went to the illegal side a lot because of that. The key is always ask yourself " do I need it? And What am I gonna do with it? ". By the way sample libraries cost much more ( considering the need to buy ssd etc )

You are completely right, if only I had known that in 2019 when I began to install a small home-studio. I now know that Logic‘s stock plugins would have been all I needed, nevertheless at the beginning of my work with Logic I thought I must have some more and these „some“ turned many. So far, so good, but I‘m nothing but a hobby musician, moreover not a good one. I have many more plugins than I need, but now I‘ll stop buying plugins. But yesterday I thought Baby Audio‘s „Spaced Out“ would be a must have and this will be the last one for a long time that I purchased.

I'm pretty sure people need to stop buying ANY plugin until they've learned how to use the ones they already have. Doesn't matter if that shiny new plugin has that ONE feature your current plugins don't, because there will ALWAYS be a new plugin coming out that has a new feature your others don't. It's how they keep you buying plugins you really don't need. Do you really need another compressor to add to your 25 OTHER compressors just because this new one has Autogain and your others don't? It's a waste of time and money when you don't even use the other 25. It's just my opinion, but I'm tired of all these RU-vid channels praising a new plugin when it essentially does everything the other 100 plugins they've already praised do as well. Stop the trend now!

A lot of very good points. Honestly, a little tired of the "pros could make good music using all stock plugins so don't obsess over plugins." I believe this is true, but it only stops people from buying things they may not need. It doesn't tell someone what investments may make things easier. The real question is: where's the biggest bang for my buck at each career stage? To use the construction analogy... Yes, a skilled worker could probably build a house with a 10 oz Stanley hammer, a hand saw, and a clenched jaw full of chewing tobacco. And, yes, if you dropped off a stacked contractor's tool chest in some laymen's driveway and said, "here you go...everything you need to build [whatever]," they are probably going to struggle (and break some things). HOWEVER, having a buddy that can tell you, "Son, that's a hammer your wife uses to hang baskets and pictures on the wall...you need a real hammer," (true story) is incredibly valuable. Knowing the right time to invest in a specific power tool can save you dozens/hundreds of wasted hours. The question I always have is "If I have $X right now to put on improvement where is that best spent RIGHT NOW?" At some point, maybe it's a synth. At another, maybe it's something like Syntorial, a PML course, or the "producer accelerator course." Maybe I'm wasting hours and hours screwing around making hihats and I should just get a decent drum sample library. Maybe I'm wasting a ton of time tweaking some stock effect and could save dozens of hours by getting a plugin that suited my needs better. How do I figure that out? If this video taught me anything, it's that I really need that "dude, you need a real hammer" guy in my life. A mentor for music production. Not sure where to find that. I'm not into some music scene.
@NathanJamesLarsen
@NathanJamesLarsen 3 года назад
I don't disagree with this at all - I have plugins I love that I bought and I find very valuable. This video is really geared to those who think that plugins will "save their productions" Also - Disclosure's first hit was produced and mixed with stock plugins. But I maybe only have 10 plugins I feel are like "yeah these are 100% worth paying money for" and the rest are basically plugins that can be replaced with stock options. Just as good. But the number of producers who are obsessed with buying the newest plugin is insane. It's a waste and it's getting people focused on the wrong thing. Focus on making better music and find plugins that make me more creative - that's my metric

I have 700 plugins, and have only bought 1 (a drum plugin) the rest are freeware....lool Lots of plugins can be good, as in having many available tools, but its not what people should lean on. Skills should be leant on, not software. I would say another reason to not buy plugin is...you don't need too. (i'm not talking about cracking software btw). I do not use every single plug in I have , no doubt, I probably use 30-40 different plugins (I do everything in the box so many of these are virtual instruments, or amp sims cab sims etc and I work in Reaper, stock plugins are functional but not the best, although I use the stock EQ a lot, and one of the stock delays is really good). But I think it is nice to have different examples of the same type of plugins, It can help you to learn, but also I don't lean on them. I could delete 90% of them and be fine, maybe even 95%. I have never equated money spent on gear/software with ability.. Also with Freeware, they spend less time on fancy GUI and more time making good solid functional plugins, so you get more out of them the more you know and the higher your skill set. I like to have different options with Compressors, Saturation , delay's and Modulation.I tend to pick the one that is closest to what I am trying to achieve straight away and tweak from there. I am primarily a guitarist, so my way of working I guess comes from that.I have a similar approach to pedals on guitar,. I own a lot but I know the pedals very well and can get most types of ones using a couple of pedals, or a lot, but like plugins I know which ones are right or closer to the end goal so I like having that choice. However I am far newer to engineering and mixing than I am to specifically guitar Tone, so I have way ore to learn, but I know that, and dont for 1 second think getting a new plugin fills any gap in skill.
