Hi! Thank you for another interesting video. Glad that you have included treats for our furry friends. I have not read all the comments, but I wanted to add something. I once belonged to a dogs treats group and they always stressed that any meat that was going to be dehydrated raw for pets had to be deep frozen for at least a week to kill parasites. Also, after the raw meat treats have been dehydrated, and depending on the protein used, they had to be "oven blasted" for 5 minutes at 150C in order to kill bacteria harmful to humans handling the treats. Keep dehydrating!! :)
I buy beef heart from the grocers and slice it thin and dry. The dogs are so in love! Also have made cooked sweet potato blended with chicken liver, using a ziplock bag with a cut corner, I squeeze blobs out and dehydrate. They love them!
I don’t even own a dog, but I constantly see commercials for various dog food brands each claiming to be better than the others. So I was just curious to see how it’s really supposed to be done, good ol’ homemade.
I dehydrate mango, papaya, and apples with the skins for my Aussie. She loves them. She won’t eat them raw. I make dehydrated chicken, beef heart, and liver strips too. I found out the hard way (mold) that they must be refrigerated or frozen. I like the seasoning ideas.
I make liver biscotti Substitute a basic biscotti recipe liver cooked and ground shredded garlic turnip and some carrot. 2 loaves slice and bake well 2nd time. Perfect training treats.
I've been making chicken jerky treats this way for my dog for awhile now. Was glad for the information about human chicken jerky needing to be cooked first since I from time to time I have eaten one of the dog's treats. 😮
Great video. I've. Been doing this for years.. It saves money and is health for the animal. They love mixed veggies. Rescued animals for 30 years. This is a good way to get a sick dog get healthy.
Shelby is adorable. One of the ways you have saved me thousands of dollars, Darcy, is learning how to dehydrate my own dog treats. I do potatoes, liver, shrimp shells, you name it. My dog loves them, they are healthy, and they are cheap!
I did sweet potatoes for our dog and used the canned sweet potatoes in light syrup since we don’t eat them sweet. Rinsed, cut into small slices and dehydrated. She loved them. She regularly gets bits of people food anyways so I’m sure she would love the chicken and the sweet potatoes in chicken broth.
Love this idea!!! I just got a puppy so it's a timely one!! I used to make jerky all the time for my family and I discovered a little secret that works amazingly well. Go to your deli counter at the grocery store and have them slice chicken or beef or whatever fairly thin, not shaved, just thin. This meat is already pre-cooked. Take it home, marinate it, then dehydrate for awesome jerky!
I dehydrate deli meat for myself frequently. I do try to find lower sodium cuts because the salt content can be very highly concentrated once the meat is dry. I wouldn't use it as dog treats due to the high salt. But they do get really crispy and tasty.
I thought I was the only one who dipped sweet potatoes into into bone broth before I dry them for my dogs. Lol. It’s a magical trick! My dogs didn’t like sweet potatoes plain. They eat them now. I wish I had a freeze dryer.
Thank you Darcy for these recipes! It looks like Shelby really like your treats! This is so much better to do your own treats, you can make them to your dog’s taste or needs… and it costs a lot less than bought at the store. Unfortunately for us, we lost our beautiful furry friend Kimo over three years ago, I know hw would have loced them. Once I started making his dog cookies, he did not want any others… sometimes friends of mine wanted to give him their dog cookies or treats, but if they came from the store, hexwould not eat them. So I would make a batch every second weeks and freeze them… even when we went camping with him, they were on his list. 😊 I will share your video with my friends, I really like your videos, they are cery informative as well. Thank you again!
@@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you Darcy! He was a special companion. 🥰 It’s nice to see your dad has his… and you will make him treats, etc… he is in paradise!
Another wonderful video. I am now making my dog’s food (she is 13) and was today thinking about her treats. Your video is great timing for us. You have helped me so much on dehydrating and using what has been preserved. I think you are fantastic. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. . . . I've been cooking chicken and mixing it (in my stand mixer) with sweet potatoes or other dog-safe foods for my dog now that he's older and beginning to have joint issues. However, I didn't think of adding turmeric and pepper for him, I take turmeric myself (duh!) - I also hadn't yet thought of dehydrating these for him, I've been freezing them either in muffin pans or just in mounds on a cookie sheet. Haha! Enjoyed the Soylent Green reference 😆 Okay - now to finish watching the video!
Awww Shelby is a beauty! Her antics reminds me of my Sheltie, Lacy who passed last year. But I have a 10 pound poodle mix that LOVES fresh cooked sweet potatoes. I will have to dehydrate some for him!
I have just begun my dehydrating journey and am extremely excited that I found Darcy. I keep watching all of your videos and learn from everyone of them. Thank you.
I know this is aimed at dogs, but I might try a couple pieces of chicken for my cat. She is really high prey drive, helps keep mice in check. This can be a reward for that mouse she catches.
I have done sweet potatoes cooked, raw, etc. for dog treats. I put a dab of peanut butter on them for a little snack every morning before we go out to the barn for chores. I've also done it 'perfect' for my own meals. Sweet potatoes aren't just for Thanksgiving!
I've never occur to me to make doggy treats such as sweet potatoes and chicken livers. I'm going to make some chicken liver this weekend for my three doberman dogs. I've been giving them sliced hot dogs instead of store bought treats. After a few years back there was a major call back on milk bones treats it was founded that it was laced with poison. Every since then I have given them sliced hot dogs. They of course loved them. I felt a little more at ease to do this . Now after watching your video on dog treats I am changing things up for them. I have been watching your channel for three years and love your content. Keep up the good work in providing awesome information to improve our lives with great saving tips. God Bless.
I have done this for years - meat only. Used my oven before getting a dehydrator. So happy to see this video. Also, I use beef heart a lot. However, mine are minus any seasonings. Great video! Thanks!!! ❤ 👍
Thank you so much, my baby was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago and I make her food weekly because I just don't trust anything bought anymore, she can't have treats anymore but I went out and bought a food dehydrator so I can make her chicken jerky without any additives at least I know she's eating if I do it myself, anything she gets is made by me only and now she can have a healthy treat too ....I want to try carrots but make them more like a jerky and not to crunchy can you offer any tips please..I'm pretty new at using a dehydrator, thank you
Any vegetables that aren't fully dried should be kept in the fridge/freezer so that they don't mold. You can leave it a little chewy - but it has to be stored in refrigeration.
I'm definitely doing this for my dogs. The tea ball idea is genius, I'm totally doing that from now on. My dogs love the flavor of turmeric too, great idea adding it to the jerky.
Thank you very much! I am always concerned about keeping natural food and treata for my dogs. My tiny Papillon is very sensitive. I wanted to do this, but didn't know how. They both love sweet potatoes, too. Thank you. I have learned much from you over time. Again, Thank you!
Thank you Darcy for another great video. My dog is elderly and has a lot of teeth missing. Do you think I could dehydrate sweet potatoes but dehydrate them to where they are slightly chewy? I love the ideal of making her treats instead of the ones you buy. I've had to start buying the chewier ones and to me they smell and look disgusting. She just gets a tiny bit of one treat at a time. Thanks Darcy, and your dad's dog is adorable. My dad moved in with me after my mom passed away and looking back it was one of the sweetest times in my life. I've been watching your channel for a couple years. I bought my dehydrator at Menards for around $35. I have used it a ton and I love it. I have your book "Dehydrating Basics & Journal for Beginners"....I've dehydrated a bunch and even powdered some tomatoes. I love it.........easy and space saving! You are the best! Blessings to you and your family!
I'd you do the cooked version. They will be a little softer, but not chewy. You can leave them on the counter to soften up some, but always store in the fridge since they won't be completely dry
Great video and great tips. I make my own dog treats for my dogs as well. I do pork meat and various fruits. I season the meats in apple cider vinegar for a day and then dehydrate for a day too. I will add turmeric and pepper next time I make it. Thanks for the video.
We have a butchery in south africa and we make chicken BILTONG a lot...no bacteria bothering us ❤ we use vinegar and salt..so its perfect our forefathers also did this. Xx
4/14/24: Hi Darcy. I'm a first timer and newly subscribed to your channel and I loved your presentation. I learned a few things and I know I'll be saving some money as well by making these treats for my two multi-Poo pups, sisters, who just turned 7 on 3/23! Once a month I make their ground turkey/lean beef and liver kibbles with veggies and brown rice that they love, so I'm going to get busy making both the chicken and sweet potato treats tomorrow. I love to have a variety of homemade everything for them. It just so happens I have the Herb Ox I got from Amazon (couldn't find it in stores, hmm...) so I'm prepared. Thank you for sharing your video. I appreciate and enjoyed it very much.
I have made and eaten a lot of cjicken jerky but never heard that I should cook it first. I'm hoping you have a video about how to do this because I have chicken sliced in the frig waiting to be dehydrated tomorrow. Thanks for these great ideas!
Safe food handling recommends it. But you can also put it into an oven at 250F to blast for about 15 min to get rid of any bacterial issues. Dehydrators don't always heat to a consistent 160F, which is where the concern comes -thus the recommendation.
Great video Darcy. I have a bag of sweet taters and have been putting off drying them as I have plenty right now. This is another way to use them and they will keep. Also I use canned chicken legs that are past what I think is great eating, so I will carefully debone, grind up and dehydrate it. When it gets nearly dry, I cut in strips and turn over to finish up. But this time I will use the turmeric trick!
You can get them from Target, Whole Foods, Amazon, Walmart, etc. They are expensive, but I've been slowly replacing most of my plastic storage use with them and with some less expensive ones that work well, too, and glass containers whenever it makes sense. Earth Day will be a good day to buy them locally if your stores tend to put these kinds of things on sale then. Stasher: amzn.to/3zFCdgb Alternatives: amzn.to/43k0hCC
Thank you for this recipe, I have a 7 month old cavoodle I named Tilly and a 5 month old cavoodle named Bentley and I've been looking for some homemade dog treat/food because I can control what goes into it.😊
Love the dehydrated dog treat videos will watch more of your channel it’s obvious you love dogs, I am making these for sure, they are soo expensive in the store
I love all of your tips and tricks, best of all is you show us how you get out of your mistakes without waste. I have only just found your channel and I love it. I made some beef flavoured cabbage leaves in my dehydrator and put too much salt by mistake. I am going to make powder to use instead of plain salt for my seasoning. Thank you for such great video's. Love from the UK. xxx
Wonderful video! We have dogs that are basically allergic to everything in commercial dog food, so we have been making their wet food in a crockpot and they are loving it. My question is could we take the cooked wet food and dehydrated it and turn it into kibble? All of the recipes I have seen for homemade kibble have items they are allergic to.
I can't give you an answer on that because I'm not a vet - and you would want to speak to your vet or a qualified pet nutritionist. It's dehydrated and they would need a lot of water support for it. I would freeze it or freeze dry it before I'd dry it, especially if it contains any protein at all.
Hello Darcy! This question is not about the dog treats, but about the DH Trays. The "book" says to "avoid scratching" the DH to put the trays in "smooth side" down. I wasn't too positive about which side they were talking about, but I see that you are loading the trays with the "lip" side down and the mesh side up. Is that what they meant? It made more sense to me to so it the other way since that gives you an "edge" to push your food against and contain it from spilling over, but perhaps my thinking is not correct. Can you confirm the correct direction of the trays? for me?
Shelby, if you don't have meat or chicken, what vegetarian recipes have you seen that are healthy for my pets ? I bought several bottles of oriental fish sauce a few months back to encourage my cats and my pit bull Mosh to eat nutritious things I make for them that they sort of turn their noses up at. Couple drops of the stinky fish sauce and they think it's wonderful..hahaha. I'd like to make veggie treats using the fish sauce, but realize I'll need to keep them in glass jars so I don't have to smell them ! Ps..fish sauce is cheap.
Fish sauce is not vegetarian? Shelby says she doesn't understand what it means to not eat meat :D The sweet potatoes would work if you do a veg broth instead of chicken broth, but they can be hit or miss with dogs. Look at peanut butter treats that are all over the internet.
@@ThePurposefulPantry I'm not vegetarian either.. lol I said vegetarian because slot of the time I only have vegetables, rice, etc on hand. No... My favorite meat is a big porterhouse.
@@carolyn9444 While dogs are omnivores, cats are obligate carnivores. They have very little need for plant matter, and little ability to digest it properly.
Be careful with the broth that you use for pet treats. Most information sources warn against onion for cats and dogs. I looked up several brands and they all contained onions. Just something to be aware of.
Mine won't touch sweet potatoes(or veggies in most recognizable form) but I've been doing chicken for years and have some to process today. That or any organ meats he loves.
Wow that is so awesome, I just got a bag of these 2 ingredients yesterday and our dog loved them but they are pretty expensive! I don’t have a dehumidifier so can I air fry?? Thanks for the video
Dehydrator is what you mean, and if your air fryer has a dehydrating function, yes. Otherwise, you're just cooking them - which your pup may love anyway.
My dog loves some treats from swanson vitamins called 'brewer's yeast formula'. The milk bones I have been feeding her are getting difficult to find so I am looking for alternatives. I have some of the non-fortified brewers yeast and think I might try to make this with some of the yeast in it.
Great...another use for the tea strainer!!@ I've been wondering if I could do raw chicken or meats ...thank you for the info. Would welcome any other ideas for the pups as you develop them!❤
Human jerky, hmm? That was funny. Thanks, Darcy. I'm going to try both the chicken and the sweet potato. Treats are very expensive and who knows what's really in them, right?
Oh Darcy, I have just found you and I just dearly love you thank you so much for your videos. I just wondered if there was any difference in the one that you cooked and one that was raw as to which one she preferred or if she even made a difference
HI DARCY: great video I make sweet potatoes for my beagle never tried the chicken/ HAVE YOU EVER MADE YAK CHEWS.? you can use skim milk instead of Yak milk.
@@girlnextdoorgrooming no I don't I just google a few videos, I bought three quarts of skim milk and you need lime juice you are making curds and whey have not tried but will next week I bought some for my beagle 3 for $22 I will make my own
@@ThePurposefulPantry right now he’s getting freezed dryed chicken Barkley’sChiccken birtes fresh pure raw. So when you freeze dry there not cooked? And you can raw dehyate raw also
I was wondering, if I cook the chicken in the oven at 350 degrees just until done and then slice into thin pieces and dehydrate until completely dry will that decrease or even kill off the harmful germs? I saw another channel who said to "flash heat" chicken and any meats that might contain harmful germs for just a few minutes at the end of dehydration to kill germs and/or harmful bacteria. I am new to dehydrating and have no clue if this would work or not. What are your thoughts on this? Don't worry, I am not going to hold anyone accountable for my dog's health but myself. I am just curious as too whether or not cooked chicken dehydrated would be palatable. I am thinking my dog would like her treats prepared this way.
Yep - it's what I said, too - 250F oven for 10-15 min after will do the same thing. I prefer it to cooking at 350 because that can dry out the meat in not a good way. But some of the safer dehydrating tips from the safe preservation NCHFP recommend cooking first. It's up to you. It's actually not your dog's health that is the issue - their gut is different than ours. You are the one handling the meat - so doing that flash at the end is protecting you, not your pup.
I just opened up my first dehydrator, threw in some thin straps of beef and pork for my pup. The recipe book says 6hrs or until done but I have one question.if it's not dry tonight before bed can put it back in in the morning to dry more? Do I put it in the fridge over night?
I used a Cosori in this video, but my main dehydrator is an Excalibur 6-tray -- You can see a few of the ones I've used and/or recommend in my Amazon store: amzn.to/3YlBJsW
