They don't mean it to be offensive but it would be nice if they stop using it so liberally. Can you imagine kids in America calling foreign looking people foreigner any time they see them?

I don't mind being called farang. When I see other farang I address them as farang. I think it's funny.

2:32 In Chinese (at least in Mandarin) it's pronounced 老外Laowai, not "weilou"; the Japanese equivalent is 外人"Gaijin" (most Japanese are too polite to say "Gaijin" directly to your face, or they might sugarcoat it by saying "Gaijin-san").

It is not meant as an offense at all! Ever since I was young I always thought the term farang was always perceived as something positive. I have never used that term to offend anyone.

In higher end hotels the staff are forbidden to say farang - the have to use khun tang chaat or other words/phrases. They know that farang can be taken as derogitory

I'm a american born Chinese. In Hong Kong/cantonese its "Gwui Lo" = ghost man, white guy, or foreigner. My father used it often. When I'm in thailand, sometimes kids point out I'm a Farang when i walk down some local soi or open markets….i casually look around and I'm the only foreigner around…but those r kids. I was told Khun Tang Chard is foreigner in more of a proper term…and anyone not white or european. Some local Thai's also have a hard time understanding that I'm a American Jeen…or chinese american 5555

I like this ... I'm an Australian in Bangkok. What was the Thai word? Kon ta chaaaa aarai? I'm learning Thai.. I like how your videos express how farangs should learn Thai.. You remind me of my father who has a Thai wife.. Well... His second Thai wife lol ... He feels too old to learn Thai and makes excuses not too. Good on you for being yourself and not giving a fuck what anyone thinks...

I'm in Pattaya at the moment and openly getting called both 'farang' and 'ATM'. I even insisted on having my photo taken tonight outside an ATM as a joke by my partner for the night. I am a farang ATM Scott haha :-)

I don't care what they call me. They pick their noses in public. If I can be a source of amusement to some kid or naive adult, so be it. I've had kids walk right up and touch my skin like I was an OBJECT rather than a human. Usually Mom was looking on approvingly. This is the LEAST offensive thing about Thai culture. Things are different there. Those who can't handle it have any number of boring western countries to visit.

I'm not sure who you are addressing, but NO, I couldn't handle it very well, but in Thailand you have no choice. Adapt or leave. Apparently, the disgusting habit of nose-picking in public is perfectly acceptable in the Land of Smiley. I was on a hike through the rainforest down in Costa Rica some years back and there was a Chinese woman of about 22, who farted loudly several times and was completly oblivious to the reaction of the Brits, Americans and Europeans on the tour.

Scott, after 18 trips to Thailand, my mind is made up. I accept the warts because the cost of living and proximity to the rest of Asia will allow me the chance to travel cheaply once I retire there. I'm not oblivious to the downside of living there but it is FAR preferable to the downside of living in Alabama on 2350 a month. It wouldn't even be possible in other parts of the USA. I'm just not bothered by being called "farang". The whiners on ThaiVisa are a very diverse bunch, some of whom drink too much and flip out over bargirls and indulge in other stupid shit. In general, I've found that I get respect in Thailand that I really don't deserve. The perception of "wealth" here, combined with my pasty white skin, seem to have shielded me from a lot of problems. I don't see anything wrong with acknowledging the cons along with the pros. Sorry that you received my comments in a negative way.

Fred Azbell Today here in the UK, an old lady walking in front of me at the supermarket, let RIP. Not once, but two times. Not a care in the World on her face. HAHA. I'm sure the Lettuce leaves on the shelf wilted a little. I think the word "Westerner" or at least a more polite name should replace (farang). But to be honest I dont think its something that even well educated people in LOS give a shit about. I hear it all the time from, working class to Middle class Thais. So sadly I dont really think the Thai class room will ever discourage, Farang, falang etc. I dont care for the word.

Yup. I make it a point to say here in France, "Je suis française, de longue date." If they further ask where I was born, if it's polite and I feel like it, I say, "Je suis née aux Etats-Unis." Otherwise, when someone in France gets too nosey (most do not, not directly) you can say, "Ca me regarde." At this point, after 20+ years here and full citizenship, I consider myself French, but American by birth and still a US citizen. The French will always call you "The Greek," for example, if you were born and raised here, your parents were born and raised here, but you are of Greek ancestry. It's just a quick reference and USUALLY not derogatory at all. We used to do that in Ohio and NYC, I recall. Kind of not fair, really. Good video. Good answers for the past year, uprated.

Coming from a Thai person, the "kon dang chad" is probably the best way to say it. When Thai people hear you say that, then right away we can identify that you're an educated man, and you respect the language. In my honest opinion, "Farang" isn't meant to be offensive, but it can easily be taken in that way. I agree with you wholeheartedly that children and Thai people should be a bit more aware of their language.

In Australia we call people from Asia, Asians. It is usually not derogatory, however, we don't go up to a person and say, "Hey Asian, how are you?". We leave out the "Hey Asian" part because it is unnecessary and seems rude. Perhaps that is the sort of thing that some people don't like in Thailand? Personally, I don't care, but I have not been in Thailand long enough to start worrying about it.

Farang means "Western/European foreigner" (caucasian looked primarily). If someone talking to me, mentioning "Khon tang chaad" I will ask them back immediately "which race/nationality" since the way we(or just me=TH)using this word as a noun as same as we called "khon chene = Chinese, khon kaek = hindi(people from India and the like) to define which region they're from. It's kind of casual words not offensive words. It meant to use in observers conversation not to foreigners directly, but yeah someone might use them on the wrong manner(+ ignorant) then it could become derogatory. Anyway, don't hold me to this, I haven't had social interaction much these days so I don't know which manner TH people will using it. Sorry for my imperfect English.

Everytime i visit thailand, even Thai people i have known for the past 3 years still call me Farang. All i do is say back " Con Thai Con Thai " Which means Thai People.

Farang term normally used for Caucasian (white) race people. But in Thailand they sometimes use this term for even non Europeans. I was born as Lebanese, not as white as European, but when they see me they address me as farang.

To say Indian is fine, I live in Arizona, we likely have as many American Indians as any state other than South Dakota. Canada has so many names for these people it's impossible to keep up. Aboriginals, Indigenous People, the list goes on and on. With Alaska being so close to Canada expect to see a few people with their noses out of joint no matter what you say Eskimo or whatever, it's best to just ask a hotel clerk or waitress. Personally. I could do without any names. If a White person was this difficult insisting upon Northern European-American, or Nordic-American people would go nuts

I don't find it derogatory at all. My wife and her friends use it openly and never in a negative reference. It is a way that Thais refer to Westerners, just as Westerners refer to those in the East as "Asians" Last time I checked. "Asian" was not derogatory. Although, in the USA, that could change at any time. Their country, their culture. One of the reasons that I prefer Thailand to the USA is their openness and the lack of Political Correctness that is found in the USA.

Hey Scott, I follow and enjoy your you tube posts. I very much enjoyed your piece on "Bang of Klong Toey" I spend a few months in Thailand every year.. I have a condominium in Hua Hin. . I'm sure you have see many people who visit countries other than their own, and expect that country to change for them.. Living in California, I am smothered by "political correctness" which to me means.. "ignore the facts" I have many thai friends.. and am not offended in the least by the term falang. Although, I am usually referred to as. "Pii Ray" Chok dee na khrap.

There are more than one side for this. First, close to none of Thais try to talk or teach Americans how their children should be educated in USA. Westerners often forget that they come here with their rules and start to expect something. There are things I don't like here, and there are things I don't like in USA. It doesn't require to spend 20 years in that country to understand that there is no point, reason or even a right to change the ways of locals.

And still my faulty logic can point the difference of significance between animal torture and just random culture traits of everyday life. For example I live in front of the local school. I am really annoyed of their everyday activities, early anthem, praying, singing, shouting like crazy. But I don't want them to change. I just wish my damn landlord had told me that there is a school in that nice temple and it is quiet because of a school break. That is my way of thinking and logic. All countries and nations have their negative traits. You adapt or gtfo.

Jeez... so I can no longer eat Farang food, drink Farang beer or ask for the next Farang bar? Might make things difficult. Quite right of course, they should be saying person of Euro-Caucasian extraction. The little kid next door shouts 'Farang, Farang' when he sees me and does a Wai that I taught him, hilarious.

Farang mean France. They call you that because Cambodian and Thai always call European and american Farang

I think the word Farang stem from the word France--people of Thailand must have had regular contact with French colonists of the past. As of now, Farang refers to white tourists/foreigners. It does not seem to derive from or held derogatory meaning or association. Someone in the comments compares Thais calling a white foreigner "Farang" to a white Australian calling any foreigner from Asia "Asian." The concept works both ways. Needless to say, the Westerners are historically leaders in assigning very offensive names to non-white people of the globe. I am not proposing any remedy here. I am simply pointing out why you and other white people get such a negative backlash when trying to raise an issue like this.

I think you need to do a bit more research. The word is also said to stem from slave traders in the Middle East. While most Thais do not intentionally use the word in a derogatory fashion, there is a more polite way of saying foreigner in Thai - คนต่างชาติ. I’ve been here close to 25 years, how bout you?

Anyone who is offended by being called a falang needs to chill out, falang is not used as an offensive word.. There are too many falangs that are offended by any and everything.. If you are in thailand and dont like being referred to as a falang, then you can leave..

LOL.....that reminds me of an incident once when I was leaving Thailand on a Japan Airlines flight. As I entered the cabin, I was greeted by a very nervous young Japanese lady who said (hesitantly) "Welcome aboard, MAN,,,,,,,,,,,uh....PERSON.......(pause).......SIR!!!!!" Some of the other Japanese flight attendants were cracking up laughing at her mistake. I was just delighted.
