Love tip #1, do NOT spend what you don't have! If your bills are paid, you have a savings, your family is taken care of then sure it's okay - but do not go into CC debt for Pokemon. Take care of what matters first!
I would go even further and say, this... If you haven't paid off your CC debt, don't start buying Pokemon. Pay it off first. The interest rates on your CCs is probably more than your return on investment on anything else. Damn evil credit cards!
Dude totally agree with this video! Some people go broke trying to chase a card when they could’ve just purchased it! I think Patt did a video awhile back about minimizing your card set. Great advice!
Great advice as always mate. I have started a £0-£20k challenge for a skyridge Charizard (psa10) and doing it on my channel. Lengthy to create but when the first one is done it be amazing.
Love your advice. My #1 rule is always go in with low expectations when opening and always do your research! You will find deals on sealed product and/or singles if you stay patient. Control the impulse.
Thanks for the great advice mate. I've grown up with Pokemon and your channel was one of the reasons I decided to get back into the TCG collecting hobby. Lots of nostalgia and the FOMO hit me really hard. I am just starting out, but I think another practical rule I am setting for myself is to keep my collection within 2% of my net worth (this figure could change over time and may differ from person to person). The rest go into more conventional asset classes like ETFs, stocks, cash and crypto. Keep up the awesome work!
Awesome plot points. Also keep in mind about waves/reprints. With crown zenith just coming out, and already hopping up in price DONT WORRY! They won’t cut that set out in the next month, just keep printing. Prices will eventually go down. Don’t fall for the FOMO
I have a hard time deciding to either keep opening products to complete sets or hold for future value of unsealed. I do both but it's hard not to open sealed stuff when you're still working on a set lol.
I just got a evolving etb for 68 on a pay in 4. Pay in 4 is my golden egg. I buy one thing per pay day that’s no more than 60$ because I used to spend that on food or drinks anyway. And if I want something around 150$ I wait 3 paydays. My true problem is keeping sealed and not opening!
As I look around my office and see nothing but Pokemon cases and sealed product, do not let my wife see Rule #1. Only thing that makes me feel better is my kids keep telling me that even after fees, etc. if I sold it, it would still have been a better investment than if I had put it into stocks. More fun too!!!!
Got another tip, don't get high on your supply aka opening your sealed collection. I had to get a storage unit to keep most of my stuff so it wasn't as accessible
I bought a Pokémon centre evolving skies ETB for £90 and a chilling reign booster for £127. I’ll resell the chilling reign in a few years to hopefully recoup the evolving skies ETB purchase :)

I sell to open and hold. Unfortunately I fall to where I find alot of what Im looking for and blow alot at the same time and end up having trouble the rest of the month
ngl, I started my collection end of 2021 with credit card debt and idc, reason is because the appreciation on all my products over the last year has gone up more than the interest on the borrowing so it's a W. Extremely rare case, but it is a W. Not recommended for all, I bought all mine in March 2022 most of my old x&y boxes.
Having a checklist and your parameters written down ( with a reason why the price is justified i.e vintage, low pop ) keeps your spending from falling into fomo overspending and helps you track appreciate your progress.. it's easy to continuously spend and not give yourself time to appreciate what your buying.. especially at the speed modern product releases today

Also want to add to not just buy in the beginning I waited years to buy my first etb of shining fates fusion darkness brilliant and vivid all for 33$ for a single etb. The boosters are usually cheaper in the beginning but I never have the beans to throw at a booster half the time so the etbs are a solid wait unless it’s pc ones
Already love the video!! I collect cans walking my dog and every month I get about $70 that’s my investment in Pokémon. What pulls I get from opening product it’s profitable from collecting cans people throw out from walking my dog!! My wife doesn’t want me spending family money on pokeman cards she says!!! Irritating but gotta be patient!!!
Great info as always! I personally have had to step back a bit in collecting just do to my job situation but I still keep my ear to the ground and when the funds come around I seek to buy something out there I am missing. Only other thing I would add to this is do not let the FOMO control your spending habits.
S'truth! I actually budget $100 Canadian a month for Pokemon/Gifted Subs during box breaks. Means I smoke less, eat less fast food/junk food, aaaand I get a micro dose of dopamine when ripping packs. Win win! EDIT: ... your beard is glorious, good sir.
I have a bad habit where I buy everything I see lol. I have started only bringing X amount of money with me to the store or only allowing myself to spend X amount online per month. When I reach that limit I'm done no matter how badly I want more. I've started buying singles recently so I don't open my sealed product and don't spend too much ripping packs to pull a certain card
I'm new to the investing of pokemon I've just bought then sold what I could I'm I Canada's it's hard to find a seller with lots of variety booster box wise
My rule of thumb is buy 2 of everything that’s a new release and open one and leave one sealed because one day they will be worth more than I bought them for

So many people don't understand the concept of "disposable income", and they spend money they don't have, putting them in a cycle of debt and living paycheck to paycheck. The consequence of that is it takes longer to get established, and for some people, decades longer if poor habits are developed early and not broken. Take care of your responsibilities FIRST. If you do that and don't have any money left over... you didn't have any disposable income, and anything you spent would have put you in debt to somewhere. Don't live like that, because it's a horrible way to live. It's better to live even without disposable income, than to live behind on bills. It's easier to better your situation to having more disposable income, than it is to dig yourself out of the hole of debt, being behind on bills, and living paycheck to paycheck.
My dilemma is that I'm not the only collector in the house. Hubby collects Mezco and Hot Toys so it's a real juggle on who can get what and how much lol. I spent heavy on celebrations and CR and came to the realization that, yeah, maybe I should just get the singles im searching for.....wayyyy cheaper!
I remember liking your tip in another video that 10% of our income is a good boundary to start with as spending money for hobbies. As long as that money doesn’t have higher priorities needing it. Trading is fun on the occasion it can happen. I have a friend who i’ve gotten to trade with a few times. Nothing big but we are both happy.
Just got back into Pokemon and collecting and in starting to build a collection I've spent quite a bit of funds just to get going. I know this ultimately is a bad route to go as far as investments, but I just wanted to know if maybe you have tips or a video of yours you could lead me to (since I'm brand new to your channel) that would maybe be a good pointer to smart investment strategies where the only option isn't only to buy sealed product and hold. I do want to do that and I know I'm not going to make a ton of money right away, but something that could help get the ball rolling so I can make some profits through Pokemon to then reinvest in more product. Question! If everybody is keeping the same stuff sealed won't it not rise in price. I feel like everyone is gonna have those eeveelution vmax boxes and then they won't go up in value.
To a certain point but not really, You gotta realize just how much product pokemon makes so even with us hoarding it in storage units it's not gonna add up to that much in the long run. I got 10 to 20 evolving sky EBT And when you realize you could open all those in an hour it's not actually that much price wise it is but
My husband was just laid off unexpectedly, so it's all house money right now. We will be fine, and I'll get back to collecting at some point, but this is a great vid a lot of people need to hear, not just me!

Trading seems to be another viable option. but christ! the itch to open packs are unbearable most of the time. In saying that I make sure mortgage is paid, food on the table are placed and utility bills are paid before I even tapped into my account again for the pack itch or to complete my ninetales project.
Great tips, especially the house money advice. I flip comics and only use comic sales money to buy pokemon. And to anyone that isn't already in your discord, I've been in it for roughly 8 months and it's the most useful channel I'm in. Lot of great content and a really helpful community.

I was making that mistake a few months ago when I started. I was spending money I didn’t have. And started to use credit cards. But thanks you and others advice I have change and made better decisions. I still need to control the habit. Good thing I have a wife that tells me no lol I’m like a kid now lol waiting to have enough saved up so she can take me shopping for cards 😅 lol
