@@BrisaMarie o, I love to hear maybe how was your comp exam and how did you manage to get it done within the time frame you're given. I know every school and department is different. My comp exam is 3 days to answer 3 questions, 10 pages each. Someone I know doing sociology also has 1 day to answer 5 questions 😬😵‍💫😵

You can't bring anything into the exam with you though. So you would have to memorize your notes.
@BrisaMarie

Hi! PhD Exams are different for every program but for the most part they are not like a traditional test or multiple choice exam. They are usually structured by asking the phd student a very broad grouping of questions that give the phd student a chance to show what they know. So in that regard its not quite memorization but rather an exercise in synthesis and/or analysis. Of course you do have to have some things memorized hahaha but they aren't tests of memorizing. Also for a lot of phd exams they are done at home and are completely "open book" because you're being assessed on your scholarly contribution and perspectives and not what the texts are saying.

So I have three reading lists, and I am still not sure what could be a good strategy to carry on reading all three lists. Right now I am doing like reading for one list in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening. Or sometimes I just read for one list in the morning (the theory list) and one towards evening (more like a fiction list). What other ways would you suggest or see for juggling between the three reading lists? And by the way I am doing postcolonial stuff and I saw some of your exam questions had to do with colonialism, so it really intrigued me and also helped to connect better to your circumstances.
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie 11 месяцев назад
Hi! This is a super good question. For me I didn't read them separately... I kind of organized my readings based on what was easiest/most interesting. Then i tried to balance it out where I made sure I was reading things I enjoyed and some that I didn't enjoy. That way I didn't ever feel bogged down or overwhelmed. But there really isn't a right way. Honestly, your method sounds really efficient to me and helps keep things organized and progressing evenly. I do have a playlist about exam prep that may be helpful later, but as for this question, if you are enjoying this process you described then it sounds great to me! (here is the playlist just in case : ru-vid.com/group/PLY-K7nK2wQ2WoEjsHAuMFqAFVFDeXszVx ) I hope this was somewhat helpful! If not let me know and I will try to think through other ideas too! And Yes! I love that we are both looking at anti-colonial theory/scholarship that is sooo exciting!

@@BrisaMarie Submitted my written exhibits today. Orals are scheduled to be three weeks later. Any strategies for the orals?
@BrisaMarie
@BrisaMarie 2 месяца назад
Honestly at that point my advice is gonna sound cliche but ... just really believe in yourself. You did all the reading, all the writing and now you just need to present ad confident. Don't focus on perfection but rather on logic, solid thought processes and demonstrate you can *think* like an academic. So much of orals is to trip you up or put you in an uncomfortable corner. If you really just remember you do know what your doing you can and will find the right thing to say. I'm sorry if that was too abstract, but it is really what I believe!
