This video was made to bring awareness to the dangers of driving on dry rot tires. Regardless of what vehicle you are driving please check your tires because this could be a life altering decision.
Despite the clickbait video title, tires and brakes are critically important features for all vehicles. In addition to the tire's condition, the materials are also important. I made the mistake of buying cheap FireStar tires from China for a Tacoma that I wasn't planning on keeping. They were dangerous. I'd skid long distances whenever it rained. Usually, higher traction tires have softer rubber that wears quickly, but these low traction tires wore out at only 35,000 miles, so they cost more per mile than good quality tires. I replaced them with excellent Yokohama tires. The 2018 tire with severe cracking in the tread is a good example of how the ten year rule (many people claim seven years for tire life) is worthless. Cracked tires should be replaced, and that's generally a function of UV from sunlight and ozone. Age has surprisingly little correlation and isn't a useful criteria. My Hijet came from Japan with some nice Dunlop street tires that have minor sidewall cracking. They need to be replaced. I want better off road tires so I was waiting to get the 2" lift so I could use slightly larger 23" diameter tires to get another inch of ground clearance, but now I'm thinking of buying the original 21" diameter tires but getting Yokohama Super Digger II mud and snow tires which will be better for road use. Larger tires increase the effective gearing ratio, which would be good on the low end (I'm shifting out of second gear before I clear an intersection) but they would prevent the engine from revving out fully to produce maximum power at high speeds. Larger tires significantly decrease fuel economy too.
