Awesome editing tips, Jeven. Editing is actually my favorite part of the creative process. It's hard to slow my brain down and focus on that first A-Roll cut without adding flair along the way as ideas come to me. Lately I've been trying to add discipline to my process and putting my ideas into a notepad so I don't forget them and continue with that first cut. This video helps reinforce this best practice even more. Thank you!

I have a similar editing process. First I organize all my footage and while I do it I remove all bad takes to "bad" folder inside project. Also I have a roll, b roll general, b roll with me, drone, and some other folders. Then I am doing all my selects for a roll, b roll and drone footage. I am doing it in one separate timeline for each (a roll selects timeline, b roll selects timeline and drone selects timeline). And finally I put it all together into one main timeline. That's it. BTW This notion database is beyond amazing. So organized! I definitely want to hear more.

Would love a video on database building, it's something I have never tried and I'm sure there are many others like me that are having organisation issues that could be helped with a database builder.

I use a different philosophy for creating anything now that I'm retired. I look at all my work as a comparison to the pyramids in Egypt. I used to do things quickly like you just to finish whatever I'm doing to get to the next project, but now I make things that I can say when I die "That was phenomenal. I say to myself "will this be remembered 10 years, 20 years 50 years or even 100 years"? Guess in essence I'm saying I would rather do quality work instead of quantity. This crosses over all my creations whether it's building a machine, sculpting, painting or creating props for movies. Hope you get what I'm saying. I noticed you seemed to hurry on parts of your work. Think of it like your body. If you focus on all parts of your body (even mentally) it will last over 100 years, but if you neglect any parts of your body it will decrease the functionality of the whole. Best of luck in all your future projects. Let the future be in awe of your existence...

Great tips, Jeven! I struggle with my editing workflows BIG time. I've been doing the organizational part for some time and it's certainly helpful especially when you have to bounce between all sorts of different cameras. I just despise the 360 can reframe aspect so much 😩 it's tedious sometimes 🤣

Great tips! Anything to make editing less painful. My videos are a lot simpler and just for fun (not quitting day job anytime soon) but I do like to make them as good and efficiently as possible. Getting the first cut is a lot like writing code - just get the basic logic to work correctly and add the details/complexity from that.

I pretty much do this already, just a few things a little differently. I organize differently, but I kind of like the way you're organizing since it makes it easier for the imports. The one thing I'm not really doing is importing by folder because of the kind of organization I'm doing. My FCP Library is always changing based upon what I'm doing. Plus I tend to work on several reviews/projects at the same time so I sometimes mix and match. So I don't have a different library for each project, but have multiple projects in one library. I could still load multiple libraries if I want to with this way or organizing. I may look into the whole different way of organizing as I'm getting ready to record at least 12-15 episodes in a couple weeks. With all that said, the template timeline has really, really helped me out over the years. I believe you did a video about this a few years ago. It's something I suggest to people often when they are looking to streamline their workflow. Especially in keeping consistent branding. I did a rebrand almost two years ago and I'm pretty sure that's when I started doing this. I'd love to see a video about Notion. It's new to me and it looks like it is a variation on what I already do which is use MS OneNote. I typically use my main desktop for everything, but sometimes I use my laptop so using OneNote is easy with having cloud integration. It looks like Notion also does this. I use OneNote for everything per video - Title, script, description, links, tags, etc. Notion would be a different option. Maybe better, maybe not. Love these kinds of videos. I think you do one of the best jobs describing and teaching how to create.

Best tips were organizing before importing. This is also a good time to review and familiarize yourself with the footage as you're renaming it from the camera file names to more useful names for editing and organizing the footage into bins. The other good tip was the graphic sequence although you didn't go into enough detail about how to create it or how to use with your project timeline. I also liked tip about organizing most used effects into a folder. Good speed tip. Just wish you had gone into more detail about assembling a rough cut and spent a little less time telling what you're going to tell and just get to telling it. Overall thanks for the tips. Hope my comments are helpful and not taken as criticism or taking shots at you.

Yes, I really want to see your database. Also, I'd like to see all the folders you use when editing. I'm designing my RU-vid workflow and these would both be helpful. I'm not on FinalCut Pro and I'm on a PC, but it should still be what I need to do, regardless of the software and operating system. Also, are you using the cloud for storage at all? Or do you just edit on your laptop and then transfer to your desktop?

One question, i recently transitioned from Imovie to FinalCut Pro, but can't figure out of there is a way to emulate the PIP Swap built in functional of imovie. When doing talking head videos, your primary timeline is always the talker.. but when cutting to B Roll there may be instance where you want the talker to be windows, and the Broll to be full screen. The only way to do that in finalcut pro that I know about is to cut the clips and swap them on the timelines. A bit cumbersome. I can send an imovie project to finalcut when this function enabled, and finalcut magically makes it work, but can't figure out how it does it? Hope that question is clear. If there is a plugin..i'd gladly purchase if not too expensive for this functionality.

There are some great tips here. Something I have been looking for is software I can use to create my own database of B roll clips like the stock footage websites. It's easy to forget which project I had that clip of my kayaking for example. But if I could put it in a searchable database with keywords then when I want a piece of b roll I can search and find what I have available. Do you know of anything for this?

Love your vids but as beginner I find it very frustrating and way behind the curve. FCP does so much and have watched days of video but by the time i get to editing I have forgotten most of it. The sad part is my videos are only jeep installs and offroad events. Also as a beginner I am trying do all this on a mac air (still better than my PC) ...

What happens when you get into the edit and realize you didn't shot a critical part of the story? Maybe something that came up that wasn't in the storyboard. Do you ever reshot or add something after the fact? Or do you cover it with B roll and a VO?
