This was marvelous! I kid you not, I just got off the court filming myself doing shadow swings and arm-action only / with-ball serves and couldn't figure out exactly what looked wrong. The angle of the forearm relative to the bicep as the racket comes over the head and into the racket drop will help tremendously. It's a specific point I hadn't seen before. Thanks! Impressive part of what I bet was a much longer set of progressions to work on his serve before this.

This is really enlightening stuff. When I serve correctly it does feel like my arm is super extended and far from my body, even if it's not.

2:58 I learnt this bad elbow bend from lots of tennis videos. It makes me always hit my shoulder and butt when I serve. Recently, I am forcing myself to simplify the motion of dropping racquet head. Your video proofed my change and encouraged me a lots. Thanks!!!

I've been trying to correct my elbow drop for years with no success. I had accepted that I have a pretty good serve but, this video provided a new nugget.."Load the Shoulder" along with the distance of the racquet from the body on the racquet drop...Good Stuff! Thanks!

*This is one of the best serve lessons ever.* Just look at the pics at 12:00, Stuart's position looks almost identical to Federer's. Just needs to point his chest up a bit more (thoracic upper back extension). But the external shoulder rotation (true shoulder load and stretch and not a "fake" forearm load and stretch) is right there. *Excitement!*

Thanks for watching, Raul!

Problem is so many videos out there focus on the arms and the strokes movements and ignore the body rotation. Every strokes in tennis come from the ground up, arm is just the last thing in the kinetic chains.

Excellent point.

Great tip! Thanks for sharing. If I may add, that in addition to the shoulder, upper chest muscles also play a big role. Another thing I realized that stretching those muscles as part of the stretch routine before play helps a lot.

Absolutely. When I first learned tennis, back then just about all the coaches said "scratch your back". I thought That's the most unnatural thing to do because if I tried that, it's the weakest way to serve. So I never did what coaches said and just watched the pros and tried to copy the easiest serve, and that happened to be Jimmy Connors'. It's not the best, the biggest, but if I could do 75% of that, it's more than enough for recreational play.

“High level racquet drop” = “Freakish range of motion with alien DNA shoulder tendons and ligaments”
@EssentialTennis

That helps, but its definitely not necessary. Did you see the student's position at the end of this lesson? He has average shoulder flexibility.

It's not purely technique. You need good flexibility in the rotator cuff to be able to do this. All this "cheating" is done to compensate for the lack of flexibility.

😆. Honestly, what he was doing is WAY better than the 'ol "frying pan" or "waiter try" type of serve. But he was looking for the next level in his game...

To me, it means to drive the racquet drop ONLY with the shoulder turn, NOT to drive it by the elbow flex. KEEP THE ELBOW OUT OF THE DROP!

@@EssentialTennis racquetball. Couldn't serve for 4 years and broken shoulder totally changed my serve. I have to put massive spin and hit corners. Wish I did it before when my shoulder was intact but my serve looks terrible.

Look, I agree that Ian’s serve is not good. And the way he kicks his left leg out makes you wonder how he can possibly teach. But you know what, you don’t have to be a very good player to be able to teach club tennis players. I don’t think he’s waiting for Kyrgios to call.
@bobbyhoho1
@bobbyhoho1 2 года назад
This video showing his student's improvement already proved Ian has enough knowledge and ability to coach. If you think this isn't enough, try pay 2-3x more for an ATP pro, but no guarantee they can coach you better.

WTF is this he should just watch a couple of Intuitive tennis videos or Tennis evolution and he will solve his serve. Not spending hours with this crap
