Hello Guitar Player, This is a pedal chain order diagram presentation of how to use a noise suppressor pedal to reduce the noise or feedback coming from all gain pedals. I thought the diagram presentation would help the guitar players to figure out the proper use of the Noise suppressor pedal using the send and return effect loop.
Note: Sorry for the low volume. PLEASE USE YOUR FULL VOL in your system or Possibly use headphones.
Table of content:
0:04 Option 1: Using Noise Suppressor when not using high gain pedal
2:53 Option 2: Using Noise Suppressor with high gain pedal without using the amp gain
5:31 Option 3: Using Noise Suppressor along with high gain pedal and the amp gain
8:06 Option 4: Using Noise Suppressor only with the amp gain.
Additionally, I have missed explaining the alternative of option 1 if you have "Send and Return" on Amp and no "Send and Return" on your noise suppressor. Please check the link below for the alternative way of option 1:

Thanks for this, man. I just set my pedalboard using the 3rd configuration, and it works perfectly. I just changed the phaser position before the NS, 'cause i don't like how it sounds with the phase shifter going into "return" of the amp with the amp distortion, so i put it in front of the NS to have it in front of the amp, so i can have that Van Halen phase 90 sound, you know... But other than that, it's awesome. Thanks.

It is confusing when the pedal is labeled in/out send/return. But your diagram shows different connections & it works great.I have this pedal & the Sentury noise gate. I’m looking at the Cock Blocker, the reviews are good & I like how it’s a double gate & analog circuitry. The Sentury does have a digital sound to it now that I have used it for awhile I can hear it.

Thanks for doing this video!!! You have truly mastered the different configurations. I chose option #2. Although my Dr. Z MAZ 18 has the effects loop with the send and return, option #2 sounds better and has much less noise. Also., I can still use my MAZ Boost Pedal without feedback and noise. Not much difference between #2 and #3, but it option #2 sounds better with the boost. Just my 2 cents...Again, THANKS for doing this video, you really did a huge favor for many, many people. Good movie, but I can't agree with two things in the chain of effects. First, the boost pedal must be placed after the NS-2's effects loop, directly in front of the modulators section. When you turn off the NS-2, you will disable the booster while playing solos without using the gain section (a booster for playing without distortion). The second thing is the compressor, which should also be available when playing clean sounds, with the gain section turned off. The compressor should be placed directly behind the tuner and in front of the WAH pedal. This is how I set it up in my pedalboard. Generally great.
@tonecraft5386

Thanks, Marek, I really appreciate for putting your valuable suggestion. What you mentioned about the placement of the boost and compressor pedal is 100% true. In this demo, I focused only on the NS2 setup configuration and ways to get rid of humming noise.

Thanks and you can also Try to Put the Compressor on the Clean Channel substitute to your Booster pedal then put your Booster Pedal at the last Signal of your Ditry Channel then the Volume Pedal before the Noise Suppressor then down to your Modulation Pedals. In that Way you can Boost your Lead Tone when the Solo part comes. 😎

Hello George, First thanks for checking my video and for your question. For the pedal like mxr sub machine, as it is actually a fuzz pedal, it definitely should go in the gain section, the octave parameter is associated with Fuzz which does produce higher or lower octave sound on top of Fuzz sound.

Question...... what about power supplies & daisy chains ? Can you daisy chain from the tuner 9 volt output to the EP Wah Pitch Compressor ? Then another power supply to the NS and the 9 volt output daisy chained the Modulation & Time section. Or a separate isolated power supply for each device? Just thinking. Thanks
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
Hi Michael, Thanks for the question. In general, when you are using many pedals, I recommend using a separate isolated power supply as every pedal will be receiving individual power and will not interrupt the performance. Daisy chain wiring may not be a good option when you are using many pedals. However, in my experience, using daisy chain wire is fine with 6 -7 pedals depending upon the power consumption of every pedal, one more thing to make sure that you are using a power adaptor that has an output of 9v with high mA. In my experience, more mA, better the performance. For example, check the below link for Truetone 1SPOT 9V power adaptor. This adaptor is 9V and has 1700 mA which will perform excellently even with daisy chain wire. www.guitarcenter.com/Truetone/1-SPOT-Space-Saving-9V-DC-Adapter-1274115035973.gc?rNtt=9v%20power%20adapters&index=2

This is the best video explanation for the NS2, or any other pedal that has built in effects loop! One question I keep wondering to myself is, how does the effects loop on my EHX Silencer compare to my Peavey VK100’s effects loop? I’ve tried both and hear no difference at all so I continue to use the Silencer’s built in effects loop especially since I use all stomp boxes and in the clean channel.
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
Hi J T, Thanks for your question and for taking the time to watch the video. The "Send and Return" loop in your EHX Silencer is definitely different from your Peavey VK100's. The purpose of EHX Silencer's "Send and Return" is to detect noise coming from your signal after it's been affected (the sound from the dirt pedal in this case as explained in the video). The input of EHX detects more of the raw sound noise (signal before the affected sound) and cancels noise from the unaffected sound. So when you connected the dirt pedal with send and return loop. It will cancel noise coming from the sound before and after the sound is being affected and this is why send and return works better and more effective. On the other hand, any "Send and Return" in any amp, in your case Peavey VK 100's, just bypasses the power amp section of your amp. In this way, you can connect anything in between the preamp and power amp of your amp section. Please check my other video on the explanation to understand the preamp and power amp section.

Is your threshold switch set very high. This switch does cancel the noise but also lower the guitar output sound. so set only up to where you need to cancel the hum noise. As low as possible and use Noise suppressor only when you needed.

I use Version 3 both with a isp decimator g string 2 with a Marshall jvm410 and vesion 3 with a NS2 into a Mesa Boogie mark vii The only critique here is the position of the compressor in this diagram My sound, especially clean is much improved with my Keeley mini comp early in the chain for me it is Guitar-tuner-mini crybaby 535q multi-Freqout-Keeley mini comp-guitar in on Decimator or NS2 Everything else is the same The Freqout later in the chain is not responsive and pretty much useless The compressor does function as the diagram recommends but still much more “present” earlier in the chain and then you can add make up volume to taste

You are absolute correct on Compressor Pedal at the beginning of the chain, I kept compressor pedal in send and return of Noise suppressor just to demo on how to cancel the noise when Compressor pedal is generating humm noise. This is demo for noise cancellation using Noise Suppressor from the possible pedals that generates noise, I am not trying to demo the correct chain of pedal here. So I would suggest just to get an idea on Using Noise suppressor correct way to cancel humm sound from possible pedal.

@Fr. Matthew Venuti, Thank you for the Good question you asked. This is something I missed to discussed in the video. Normally the looping pedal has to be in the last in the chain to record every kind of desire sound. In option 3 in my video, if you put the looper after the reverb pedal which is the last pedal in the chain order, will be the best place so that we can loop all of the desired sound and play. Please try and let me know. Thank you again.

very confusing...for one thing thats to many effect pedals...second why put Noise Supressor in the middle of your rig? why is the distortion and fuzz b4 the modulations and timing effects? all the ways are confusing, how is your sound? muffled untimed and tinty...i would suspect...
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
Hi, Your comment and question mean a lot to me. It is confusing when you first start but the more you mess with it playing your guitar, it's so interesting. All guitar players are different and usually, they just keep only the pedal that they really need. Its not necessary to keep every pedal. Noise Suppressor is placed after the pedal that creates feedback, that is the reason why it is placed in the middle of the rig, and technically it's placed after any kind of Overdrive/ Fuzz/ gain pedal. Modulation and time pedal placed after the distortion and fuzz as we do not want any kind of modulation or delay or reverb sound to be Overdriven. My sound is amazing with how I demonstrated in the video and just would like to share the info. I hope you would be able to rock your sound.

Because I wanna use volume pedal to control Master volume Guitar > tuner >NS > Higih OD > amp input NS > mod > time > Volume > AMP Return > NS > AMP sent
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 2 года назад
Hi Kimson, You technically can put the Volume pedal anywhere. When you have at the end of the pedal chain, in your case, after reverb and connected to AMP return, it will control overall volume. There is some case, I know many guitar players including myself, place volume pedal before delay just to get the delay effect to feel even after turning off the volume pedal. This method is applicable when you play swell effect.

The buzz completely stops whenever I touch my cable sleeve , strings , pickups and it gets somewhat low but still audible whenever I move to a certain position However ,that’s impractical for me to stay in that position every time I play cause it starts buzzing again with every inch I move. I am opting for a noiseless clean tone but this is disturbing me. Please help!!

I don't think option 3 will actually make much distortion. It looks like it is just the guitar going straight into the power amp.

The maxon808od/tube screamer is boosting the amplifiers distortion.it will give you higher gain and more definition. So it does make more distortion

In opción 3, where do I put an EQ pedal?
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 Год назад
EQ pedal can go any where. I can't tell you where to place your eq pedal without knowing how is your guitar tone and our OD/DS tone. My simple suggestion is, First check you clean guitar tone and if you want to change your guitar dynamics in term of eq. Put it between guitar and OD/DS. If you like your clean guitar tone dynamics and want to change the OD/DS dynamics, then place it after the OD/DS.

Just wondering where would you put a Voodoo Lab Microvibe in the pedal chain...?
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
Hi Jasons Guitar Jams, Thank you so much for your question. As per my understanding, Microvibe / UniVibe technically belongs to the modulation category so it should stay after the gain pedal. But having that said, I have seen many guitarists use Univibe before the gain pedal and they point out that the Univibe tend to sound more creamy and warmer sound-wise. If you see Hendrix, he uses UniVibe after Fuze (gain pedal) but he does use amp gain as well to get his sound, so amp gain is working after Hendrix's Univibe sound. So my suggestion is depending upon which amp or what level of gain you are using in your amp, try your Microvibe placing before the gain pedal and after the gain pedal. Also, check how much gain are you using in the amp? Try below 3 ways and also try with low/mid/high gain level in the amp and see which way it sounds best for you. a. Guitar---> Univibe---> Gain Pedal --> AMP b. Guitar---> Gain Pedal--->Univibe---> AMP C Guitar---> Gain Pedal ----> AMP ---->Univibe (Place it in Send and return of amp)

So what if you’re setup is like option 3 but you’re not using any of those pedals (delay, phaser, etc)? My pedal chain is tuner, wah, mini tubescreamer, eq, noise suppressor…and I still get a high pitch feedback when the amp is above a 3 for volume.

where to put eq pedal in 4cable method?
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 Год назад
you can put EQ depending upon which pedal sound you wanna modify. Personally if i need to suggest, in 4 cable method, EQ will be effective to put between Amp send and NS2 Return, in cable 4 in the option 3 video. In my opinion, modulation and time section pedal has nothing to do with the EQ, but the clean sound and OD/DS sound might need to be controlled by EQ.

Any ideas on how to do this with a stereo rig and where to put a micro pitch shift utilising both outputs? All the tone comes from the amp and time effects are in the loop, currently using option one. Basically looking to split the pitched signal into stereo whilst keeping the reduced noise

@@tonecraft5386 Well right now I have a Boss TU-2, Mr. Black BB-74X, Original Marshall BluesBreaker, Boss EQ, CAE Booster/Line Driver, Ibanez HW TubeScreamer, Boss SuperOverDrive & a MXR Blue Box. I just wanna use the Bass OD to highlight the bass distortion signal.
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
@@cubfan909 As I tried to understand the pedal that you are using. And I am understanding that you are trying to get distortion-type sound. But I see you have all OD pedal and Fuzz pedal. Out of the pedals you mentioned, (Mr, Black BB 74X), (Ibanez HQ Tube Screamer), (Boss Super OverDrive), are Overdrive Pedals and (MXR Blue Box) is a Fuzz pedal as per my understanding. You need to understand that Overdrive, Fuzz, and Distortion are completely different types of pedals. There is no way to sound like distortion sound using multiple Overdrive pedals. So, if you would like to have distortion sound. You must have a Distortion pedal. And as I have mentioned in the video, Tunner is good to place in the first, EQ pedal depends on which pedal you wanna have a change in the effect. A boost pedal is best after OD/DS, but it's a personal preference. For me to understand your desire distortion sound, would you mind telling me the name of the song that you like which contains the exact or similar distortion sound. That way I can help you or suggest you the right pedal to get first then you can start getting your desire sound.

Hello, Thanks for checking my video. I have many guitar amps and DSL40 is one of them. The amp technically has nothing to do with the sound-sucking thing. I guess you have Threshold level is high in your NS2. Set Threshold level to where it does cancel the noise. I put mine around 9 or 10 o clock level and It does sound perfect without sucking any sound. Remember, the more you increase the Threshold level, it sucks sound.

Pregunta: donde poner el pedal de volumen? (where to put the volume pedal?)
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад

Where would you put an overdrive pedal as a clean boost (no drive, full level) in the last option, using only amp gain?
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
Hello @bnoyz3, Thank you for your time watching my video and for the question. As just my personal suggestion, If you are using an overdrive pedal as a clean boost in the last option (option 4 the video), you can place an overdrive pedal between compressor and amp Input. But if you are using an actual boost pedal, I suggest using between amp send and noise suppressor return. With my personal experience, boost pedal response more effectively placing after the of gain. But if you are not using any gain, then you can place at the beginning of the pedal chain order.

quick question. if it has an eq pedal (ge7/mxr) where would you place it? TIA
@tonecraft5386
@tonecraft5386 3 года назад
Thank you so much for such a good question. Just my personal opinion is, EQ can go anywhere depending upon which pedal sound you would like to make a change. I personally have placed after dirt sound and before mod and time pedal. Also, as per my understanding, EQ should go along after the preamp section. In my diagram presentation, all options have preamps used through an amp in different ways. For Example in the Diagram of Option 3, the preamp section (which is basically on the amp) is used after the Dirt pedal. In this case, I would say EQ might work effectively after the amp section. So, in this case, I would like to suggest placing EQ either between Amp 'Send' and Noise Suppressor 'Return' OR Noise Suppressor Output and Modulation section.
