In this video, I dive deep into the importance of fertilizing your orchids and how they play a critical role in orchid care-right after managing temperature, light, and water. Learn how to balance the nutrients your orchids need, from slow-release fertilizers to the NPK ratio (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) and why orchids don’t need much of certain nutrients like phosphorus. I’ll also discuss the difference between organic vs. inorganic fertilizers (with more detail in a future video), how water quality affects your plants, and why you can still get blooms without fertilizer (but it’s not ideal!).
I cover common fertilizer mistakes-like giving too much at once, causing root burn, or not fertilizing enough-and share tips on foliar feeding and how to properly flush the media to avoid salt buildup, especially with sphagnum moss and bark.
We also explore micronutrients like calcium and magnesium, the role of hormones and seaweed in plant health, and how to read fertilizer labels to understand the numbers. Lastly, I break down how different orchid species have unique fertilization needs-whether it’s Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Vanda, or Catasetum.
Whether you’re using a general fertilizer or an orchid-specific one (hint: those big box store brands may not be as good as they seem), this video will help you take your orchid care to the next level!
Keywords: orchid fertilizer, fertilizing orchids, NPK ratio, slow-release fertilizer, organic vs. inorganic fertilizer, orchid care tips, feeding orchids, best fertilizer for orchids, micronutrients, foliar feeding, seasonal fertilizing, flushing media, orchid species care, Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Vanda, Catasetum, root burn prevention, orchid feeding schedule, orchid growth tips, calcium and magnesium for orchids.

That was a wonderful presentation! I had to watch it twice. So happy to see you after Helene. I'm in NC. Our mountain community really got destroyed. I'm in the Piedmont. We got a little flooding and a few trees down. Anyway...the Orchids look great. I learned how to feed my Orchids from Mr. Rick L.,too! Your R/I system is CRAZY! It reminds me of my Dad's pumphouse on our farm. I'm like Wow! Are you an Engineer by any chance? 🤔

That was a very informative video Dave thank you. I use MSU fertilizer the past two years along with Cal-Mag, and a seaweed extract. I don't have a R/O unit. Instead, I buy gallons of distilled water at the grocery. I don't do weakly weekly anymore. However, I fertilize every other watering. I think I do see a difference as years ago I never fertilized, but now I do see better growth since using fertilizers.

I feed mine like Rick L does soaking for a few. I then do a pour through a couple of times. I also use Silica,Cal mag and a very good seaweed. This week goes to the fall winter regime 200 ppm for the orchids or less.

Great video and great fun opening! I’ve been growing orchids 30+ yrs and shifted to the Growth Technology GT orchid fertilizers 2 yrs ago (bec so many RU-vid plant folks raved about GT; made in Australia and available online in the US thru The Plant Haul) - my plant blooms & plant growth have doubled since starting that, with added CaliMag & Kelp. Very happy. I may experiment with/ Palmers too.

The big stores sell a good fertilizer (Orchid Pro) that is recommended by AOS, it’s made by Better Gro. I think Better Gro is owned by Palmers. I believe that orchid roots are burnt by residual fertilizer salts, that’s why the orchids need flushing. You have a nice fertilizing set up.

I like to try to mimic nature by running rain water through a pot of potting mix and dilute that runoff with more rain water down to 100ppm and use that water to spray the roots.

Hi Dave😅🙌HAAA! The intro! Yes, you are in tune with orchid fertilizer. The Vandas will be fine hanging on the pool cage. It's made to withstand storms. I did a new video of an orchid Collection in Japan. Her yard is tiny and filled to the brim with orchids, some heat stressed, some cold damaged, and some changes to how she grows. Fertilizer is still not properly known amongst the older generation, yet they have a lot of knowledge from vegetable cultivation, or basic know-how on elements of fertilizer. I think you'll like watching.

Your vanda “wall” looks great! In Australia we don’t have the fertilisers you mentioned, but I agree with that watering with the can I can’t get the watering accurate. I now tend to soak the pots in a tub for a while. My orchids have really thrived doing this. Having said that, I live in a very hot climate and they dry quickly.
