STOP "Hitting from the Top" FOREVER [Simple Golf Swing Thought]

The root of the OVER THE TOP PROBLEM is that you are consciously HITTING FROM THE TOP of the golf swing. Instead of hitting from the top, try hitting from the bottom of the swing. Top shows you how a little bit of PATIENCE goes a long way in helping you make your best contact.

the s&t system appealed to me early on because of the weight forward and the resulting repeatable bottom of the swing and clean hits. i was left with the problem of over the top. after some considerable time and one of your tips i realized that furik's funky swing had the answer, namely the gravity loop near the top. so i started to relax the drop/loop and with the forward hip shift found the beauty of the rocket ball right down the range. i cannot tell you how greatful i am ! at 78 its a little late, but i am delighted.

Dude I found this swing, as you describe it with hands falling, one day and lost it the next day. It was a "mistake" in my normal swing and I was about to abort the whole thing when I turned back to address and my hands catapulted through the impact zone and I effortlesly hit the ball about 25 yards further than an 8 iron had ever carried before. The whole swing was automatic, and by the time I left the range I had applied it to every club with the same success... the longer the club, the more distance I gained. It took some adjusting, but eventually I was hitting driver about 50-60 yards beyond my normal swing, and I felt I had more in the tank if I could better mechanize the release (for lack of a better term). Anyway, that was 4 years ago and I have been going insane ever since that day trying to figure it out again. You are the first person who has described it the way I remember it. It was much more than just a golf swing. EDITED to add that I was hitting every shot with unbelievable accuracy. My hands followed every shot down the fairway. Everything made sense. Now I know that "over the top", "inside to out" etc. all mean something other than I originally thought. Still can't reproduce the swing.

Tom, you have crystallized in a few words the problem of 99% of recreational golfers. Don’t have to worry so much about a lot of things. Just hit from the bottom. Works great for short pitches too. The ball goes higher and lands softer. Brilliant!
@MrProfessorwilson

I certainly agree with everything you say about how to avoid hitting from the top (which does not mean I am always able to apply it--but I'm working on it.) But here's my question: If you are not to hit the ball, i.e. pour on the power until you are waist high, what is the value of swinging any higher than waist high to begin with? Please help me with this. I've always been puzzled about this aspect of the swing.
@shanedeel2

I’m wondering the same. I’ve been keeping the club low at all times. That’s the only chance I have of not going over the top. Once you raise the club in the air you risk going over the top.

Mr. Hogan suggests that the lateral, first l move forward of the hips at the top of the backswing automatically lowers the hands. So my thoughts are 1) drive the left hip to the target and then 2) release or punch my right hand through the release.

@@SagutoGolfTom, I'm flattered you responded. I'm 63,, have played golf since college and tried every swing technique imaginable. For the past several years I've worked with a professional who had me in a vertical swing plane but the task of dropping my arms while moving vertically followed by a precise rotation through the ball was more than I could consistently master (the video clip of your swing at 13 looked like mine) More often than not I'd hang back and or rotate too early. Trying to coordinate/manipulate the arms, torso and hips was just too complex. The ball would typically go straight but rarely clean, center of the club strikes. Maintained a 10 to 12 handicap (by mastering the 20 to 30 yard pitch) but never made the progress I had hoped for given the time I've devoted recently. I decided in August to read Hogan's Five Lessons and it immediately hit me how dead on he is with virtually every word written in 1957. The last three lessons addressed EVERYONE of my problems, provided an amazingly simple way to address them and confirmed some of the techniques that have worked for me in experimentation over the years. Since August I've re read the book three times but decided recently to go on line to see who teaches his methods. To my total amazement you're the ONLY one who shows up. Imagine the best ball striker in history having only one devotee. That speaks volumes about the industry and your business opportunity. I've seen every one of your You Tube videos and it's exactly what I've been looking for and my USGA GHIN is now 8.9 (now I have to master the chips and long putts lol). Mr. Hogan matter of factually said he could take a decent athlete and make him a 70's golfer wasn't hyperbole I signed up for your annual subscription purely out of guilt but glad I did so. Hopefully, your You Tube free business model is working for you. I probably spend $12 to $15,000 per year on golf and the $100 fee is less than one private lesson. You need to make this venture work for your students and the good of the game. Thanks. Steve

I sincerely appreciate your kind words regarding my instruction, Steve, and I hope you are enjoying the online school! There's a lot of great information in Mr. Hogan's "Five Lessons" book, but there have also been so many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flights - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all can learn well from, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. By the way, have you joined the SagutoGolf Community Forum (which is included in your online school membership) yet and begun engaging with other golfers in the school? If you've not already done so it only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access in this fun and tremendously supportive community and participate in the ongoing great dialogue on a variety of swing- and game-related topics. Great video! FYI, this swing thought applies to the baseball swing as well. You definitely don’t want to hit from the top in baseball either as it will produce the same results as in golf. Like golf, keeping barrel head square thru hitting zone as long as possible is the key to consistent hitting in baseball (point of contact). Spinning off the ball with early hip rotation in either sport never ends well for the hitter. Lot of similarities between the two sports in hitting mechanics.
@SagutoGolf

Ok Saguto...i will start from the beginning. Started playing golf 25yrs ago, self taught so of course it took some time. 2yrs in shot 78. Learned how to hit a draw with this technique. 3yrs later caught the duck hook syndrome. Could not fix so stopped playing 1yr. Went back still had the hooks. Stopped playing 3months went back a taught myself how to hit fade. Played periodically for 15yrs best score 76. Stopped playing because i couldn't score any better. Started playing again 2yrs ago. Best score 85...struggled to stay intrested. Found your video and applied technique. Shot 86 yesterday with two tripples. This is a very good sign...i only started using your technique 3 rounds ago. I will do a little driving range work im sure will help...especially with longer irons and fair way woods. Excited about the game again. I appriciate your approach in lesson...focused on the big picture...not to many dam details to think about. Everything is longer and more consistent.

If you shouldn’t swing from the top, why do we take the club to the top in the backswing? Letting the club fall from the top to the belt line provides no momentum to the club head.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 месяца назад
Hi Greg, It doesn't say you shouldn't "swing" from the top; instead it says you shouldn't "hit" from the top. There's a huge difference. The key is to suppress and eventually eliminate the "hit" instinct - which plagues a majority of amateur golfers - and get the downswing started in the proper sequence. I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my RU-vid content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. I do my best to convey different "feels" or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all unique physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the same desired positions and ball striking results. These channel episodes are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. So many folks across the globe are now playing the best golf of their lives as a result. Here's a link if you care to learn more: saguto.golf.

There is a lot of emphasis on the “connected” or “one piece” takeaway, but this concept at the start of the downswing causes the shoulders to turn as the hands and arms come down, producing an outside to inside swing path. That fraction of a second as the hands drop before the shoulders begin to turn gets the club “in the slot”. At least, that is how it seems to me.

Different strokes for different folks, and for those who struggle with premature hip or shoulder rotation at the transition, this feeling of dropping the hands goes a long way towards initiating the proper sequencing of the downswing. Have fun out there! TS

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Yes, Frans - it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. In fact, here is a video of Stack and Tilt co-founder Mike Bennett hitting the driver: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7fmtzyH3rsA.html. It looks very similar to his iron swing, right?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SLjwU_1Cc7o.html If you do a search on this channel you'll see some content on the driver and fairway woods. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously. Tom

I appreciate your kind words, Richard! The golf swing is indeed overly complicated in particular by one part of the human body - the brain and all the swing nonsense and misguided instruction it has been fed. Garbage in, garbage out; and countless golf swings have sadly been trashed as a result. This is not saying that golf is "easy" as it most certainly is anything but. However, the perceived and overstated complexities of the swing itself can be greatly simplified to convey motions that are body-friendly and physiologically sound, and which simultaneously and effectively harness physics and geometry to produce a most satisfying and long-lasting experience. That's what my instruction style is rooted in, and I'm very glad to know that it is resonating well with you! Tom

I've been trying so hard to fix my OTT and this might actually help me. You're 100% right about "hitting from the top" .. I've been working on this countless hours with video, instruction, etc and still start the damn downswing from the top causing that terrible outside in motion. I was better as a true OTT natural swinger (at least with driver/short irons), but now I'm in some type of weird purgatory where I don't have the clubhead speed of a true OTT swinger and I don't have a flat swing plane either. Any cues you recommend? I'm very inflexible up top and that makes it hard for me to take the club inside with a lot of depth.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 года назад
William - If properly executed, OTT moves don't stand a chance against this swing method as it will produce a nice in-to-out path and beautiful push-draws all day long! My best suggestions if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards owning this swing: 1) Please consider the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing (including the finer points and feels) and much more. This greatly simplifies the process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. 2) For a very useful supplement to the online school, consider purchasing a copy of the Stack & Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. It will serve you well as a textbook reference guide for the swing and will be highly supportive of what you will learn in my online school. Beyond these, if you're still struggling after going through the incremental learning process in my school, we can certainly set up an online swing video analysis to identify any latent issues. Thanks, and best of luck to you! Tom

@@SagutoGolf Hey Thanks so much for the reply. The stack and tilt thing seems like a good place to start. Time for another swing deconstruction. Once I get a little more familiarized with it I'm totally good to buy your plan. My eyes were far too big for my stomach with my last deconstruction and I set myself back big time. A shitty golfer can't understand anything Ledbetter, Gankas, Nahkjavani have to say, as great as they are.
@jonathansinger3818
@jonathansinger3818 4 года назад
Over-the-top is caused from trying to put power into the swing using the shoulders. If your shoulders and body turn without dropping your hands, you will automatically have an outside-in swing. Quit trying to hit the ball hard and just do a relaxed swing with emphasis on striking the ball in the middle of the club face. A hard hit ball struck poorly will not go as far as a well struck ball hit much softer. And God only knows where the hard hit ball will end up. See this video "You've been swinging the club WRONG your whole life - here's WHAT TO DO and WHAT NOT TO DO. @ 13:57 Slow it down to quarter speed and notice that his arms start coming down before his shoulders and body begin to uncoil. The pros can get the arms and shoulders moving at almost the same time. But most of us don't play or practice enough golf to acquire that kind of timing. Just my 2 cents worth. Well, OK, 5 cents worth.

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
My own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me, Mario. 😎 (Beyond that, my transition and downswing tend to now run on autopilot because I've grooved it so much over the years.) This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. saguto.golf if you care to take a look.
