My biggest mistake as a beginning was buying into the hype instead of figuring out what I wanted for my collection/investment. Just like all other types of collections and investments, we all have a plethora of different variables going into why we buy, how much we buy, and how long we're holding for. You can wait well over a year to buy into any set that comes out today. Booster boxes can be had for same prices, cheaper if hunting and you have a years data on the contents.
#4 is a big one. Collection boxes and random products make good items to open up for fun, not so much to keep sealed as an investment except for a select few.
Disagree. Most boxes across most TCGs are only going up. Especially Magic collector booster boxes. It’s not something you sell right away. And it doesn’t go up fast. But it’s far safer than anything else. Also. Preordering a case is probably the lowest price you could get anything. Once the singles get listed, they won’t be as cheap for about a year. Meanwhile, the demand for the boxes go up
If there's heaps of demand for a collection box new, it's going to mean pretty good news long term but that's only if it's got good packs and a good promo or 2. Most are just money wasters that could have gone into better products.
Solid tips for the beginning investor. Another tip that I learned years ago is to practice patience and enjoy the ride. Most people who ONLY invest for gains and are not genuinely interested in the hobby will not last through the good times and bad of the market. Pokemon TCG can be a solid investment, but a person also needs to have a liquidation plan as well as diversification into other categories so they can sustain their collections during the hard times of life.
Etbs: Pokemon center only Booster boxes: sets with MULTIPLE $100+ chases Raw cards: buy the chase for a set about 2-3 sets later (months after hype dies) Others: buy limited and unique product not copy paste products

I’m thinking of getting into it on a small scale: was going to start with a $1000 and was leaning toward 5-6 Silver Tempest Booster Boxes or 151 Booster Boxes. Seems better than ETBs
Wish I watched this 5 years ago haha! The one of these I always follow is the exit strategy. I always try and buy two of everything. And will always sell when it doubles. Then in my brain I’ve got the one for free ha. But I have some pretty meh collection boxes from Sun & Moon and only one BB.

yeah totally agree, i bought so many random collection boxes when i first started just had to end up giving them to relatives kids or ripping them open cause couldn't sell them at a profit. Now we just go for one of each booster box plus all the hot singles that catch me eye
I wanted to help make you aware of a new possible avenue of collecting to sell. Wall display collections and smaller sample items will be more popular than a "full box". B.boxes have controlled hit rates too. Meanwhile you can hit the top card from a single tin, or 3 pack blister etc. and don't forget they look great as wall art all cluttered together as a collage and more affordable for future generations to collect. 😊
You contradict yourself a lot. For example : - Saying that Rudy should’ve invested more in ES because of the value of the cards and in the next point saying that don’t invest in singles too early because prices crash. Makes no sense
I am a newer 'investor', got in to pokemon end of 2023 (played pokemon go since 2016 and had cards as a kid, but recently started actually opening/collecting) and I am going for mostly booster boxes and ETB's, and master sets. I purchased a handful of tins and special collections in the last few months but ended up opening them chasing cards for master sets. I am trying to dedicate around $200-300 in opening towards a master set, then buying singles. I depleted too many CZ etbs chasing giratina and ultimately had to buy it, so I am hoping not to make that mistake again. I also opened more than I should have of 151 chasing the master set. I have since set a budget of 2-3 Booster boxes per set or ~$300, then buting singles. I have a sealed 151 set including UPC, booster bundle case, and special collections as well as a handful of swsh and paradox ETB's when the price is right. hoping to focus in and stay strong to my investing goals. Love the content as always, keep it up!
Definitely do some research before spending. I only buy sealed products from sets that I really like. Not sets I believe everyone else may like and what will make me money in the future. Don’t gamble on packs, if you really like a card from a certain set wait until it’s at its cheapest and then make that purchase instead of hoping you pull it from a pack. You will save TONS of money! And another for new sets being released, I see so many people blindly pre-ordering without even reviewing card set lists first. Why invest in booster boxes or PC ETBs when you don’t even know what cards will be in that set? There’s nothing worse than investing into new sets that may potentially have cards you hate the look of, and then you’ve wasted tons of money instead of waiting and reviewing that card set list before making a purchase.
There are always differant strategy’s . I know a guy that buys 3 cases of each set and he grades the cards as soon as they come out and sells when the prices are high and first to market with the cards in psa 10s . It’s an actual hustle to do it and some luck but I have seen him make some good money selling those new cards for premiums when they first come out .and that’s just part of his hustle he has long term investments as well in booster boxes and cards .
Bro...I've been around since 2015 and there is NO way to guarantee which set is good or bad. Just look at Brilliant stars and Twilight Masquerade. Both had opposite opinions and look at how they are turning out. It's important to be invested in all sets. Not equally, but you need to be in all sets
Buying off store shelf isnt always a bad ides. I have 11 evolving skies umbreon 3 pack blisters from a shelf. 6 arceus figure collections, 10 evolving skies ETBs. But right now, tictok is the move. Booster boxes in the 70s and 80s. I just got six 151 bundles for 21$ each a few days ago, and 6 gengar 2 pack blisters for 7$ each. Stuff like this is the way to go and future me will thank myself, as always.
3 pack blisters are a completely separate story, sometimes the best deal on them is in store. They seem to be a bit dearer online a lot of the time, especially with shipping taken into consideration

Wait for sales is a good call... I got super lucky when a card shop I take the kids too had a big 20% off sale to help get their boiler fixed. I got a Fusion Strike Booster Box for £112. So happy! Wish I'd picked up the Astral Radiance now, too.
A lot of people that get into the hobby as an investment just start buying and not actually doing any research, and the sad part is it literally takes probably 5 minutes to search up what the most recent sets are, what cards are in them, and what that card is worth. That way you have an actual idea what exactly it is you want to invest in amd if its worth it for you.

4:50 pull rates don’t bother me in my investing in loose evolving skies packs. Why because people will always need these packs. Especially people who make those mystery boxes like Rev and Vault will run out of ES and need to buy them to get people to buy their mystery products.
You’d be surprised how easy the sleeved booster cases are to ship and sell too. People love sleeved packs because they simply can’t be messed with like how loose packs can. And sleeved packs have another advantage which is that they are really faked like with booster boxes. I’ve seen so many fake Cosmic Eclipse and Evo skies boxes 😳.
TBH, I want to collect the different ETBs and then build competitive decks around what I get from the boxes. I’ve just started and have bought my two first boxes. Would you say this is a healthy strategy?
I’m new to all this but at 8:40 the 36 pack boxes I heard may be harder to get rid of as price increases verses the ones with less packs for the average consumer. Is that a worry? It makes since in theory I’m not buying a $800 36 pack box vs the $70 3pack promo thing like the ones with the erasers/coins.
Extra comment is it better to get 2 Pokémon center exclusive etbs vs 1 36 pack box. I’ve opted for 2 of the exclusive etbs with the thought of the 151 snorlax stamped card being like $40 now. When the whole box was $60 at release.
With Stellar Crown coming soon, I can see Obsidian Flames ETB to go up for a bit due to the Charmander promo. Shops around my local area are no longer restocking it due to supplies issue.
Just picked up a case of TM for 600 USD. Maybe the hype of the chase cards will (most likely) cool down but the upside is there for 100/BB with limited downside. You should do a solo video on the Japanese 151 BB. In the states you can get a sealed for $55-60. Seems like solid value there.
Yes and no, the returns of sword and shield on won't be as strong as booster boxes but they'll always be collectable and people will want them as a sealed product.
Excellent points Michael👍 It always pays to be patient, and to learn about what you’re investing in before you throw serious money into it. You’re bound to make mistakes at some point, especially when you’re starting out, everyone does as long as you learn from your mistakes you should be fine.
Sometimes it’s good to invest in not so popular sets tho . It’s more liquid if the sets not so outrageous and can double your money . Think about how many ppl are purchasing brilliant stars and chilling reign as opposed to evolving skies . More ppl are willing to buy something at 200 dollers then 700 . You don’t have a lot of ppl buying up evolving skies because they don’t have the money to blow on it . Most sets in the long term are gonna double if not more there value . So I absolutely disagree with your strategy . You have no idea how those booster boxes are going to perform in the long run and by the time you do it’s already expensive and you loose gains buying at a higher price . And I’m just talking about booster boxes .
From a hedge fund manager’s perspective, its 100% about downside risk management first and using trends second. Diversify with half of your portfolio to remove any potential guessing of set performance for longer term holds and use the other amount in small quantities to trade momentum cycles for different sets/cards. The TCG market is very adolescent in its trading environment. The trends are super clear and if you’re in it to make money, then it this is actually very straight forward. I’ve been pulling api data to my trading station on pokemon sets for a while now, secret; the same things happen over and over and over with sets; minus less than 1% of outliers. Trade the odds. It works. 🫡
The example I was giving re booster boxes was at launch. Launch prices are ALL the same. So parking more money into a more solid set e.g evo skies over darkness ablaze would make sense.
ETB’s are good investments? I actually bought (4) Paladean Fates Charizard tins from Target @ $28.99 each.. that’s cheaper than any TCG/ EBay listings..
I think this is all good advice but I have to politely disagree a bit when it comes to the waiting for sales segment. For example, for a booster box to be a “good” investment it would have to significantly appreciate and gain value. “Good investments” are also subjective obviously. The point I’m getting at is if you purchased a booster box for $150 or $120 on sale, it doesn’t really make much of a difference if it performs well. Hypothetically speaking, It’s like saying if you bought Nvidia stock on sale vs full price 5 years ago. The margins, performance, and opportunity far outweigh the savings on the sale. The opportunity in front of you is sometimes worth more than the timing. A lot of these products have relatively low risk too when compared to the real stock market. A lot of sealed product can be sold for minor gains or worst case, break even. The same cannot be said for stocks. Great video, just a thought I had. I love investing of all types and Pokémon is a fun way to ride the waves of investing!
Alpha investments is the only gold standard for real investors and who we look to. Idk why youtubers always say investors use Reddit. No-one does 😂. Only the collectors who wants some $ in their collection will fail to differentiate. We are not the same. 😂
