Nora Dunn has commented on fanny packs and and stuff'able neck pillows as now more often NOT being allowed. A few weeks ago I watched someone else's site and this woman spoke specifically that at check in , the person at the desk said that the fanny pack was a personal item and therefore her personal item "bag" was unallowed. Fortunately she was able to stuff the fanny-pack into the personal item bag, but the person then wanted to weigh the bag to ensure it still met the weight limits for a personal item bag. Someone else reported that when she had a cushy neck pillow, the person at the desk wanted to weigh the neck pillow along with the personal item bag saying too many people were stuffing them with more clothes, which was hiding weight. And so I don't know if those two hacks work anymore.
@ProjectUntethered
@ProjectUntethered 20 дней назад
First off, Nora is awesome! Second, I personally haven't had any issues in ~100 flights, but since others have experienced problems, it seems like a "your mileage may vary" situation. Perhps one thing that has helped me is that I am pretty discreet with my fanny pack and pillow (I ALWAYS use a fanny pack, but only sometimes use a pillow). My fanny pack blends into my clothes - or is under my jacket - and I usually swing it around my back whenever I have to go to the check in counter. The pillow is also usually clipped to my personal item which is on my back (my body is blocking it from view) or on the ground in front of the counter where the check-in agent can't really see it. Long story short, you're much less likely to have issues if you try to be as discreet as possible. If you set your fanny pack down on the counter and have a giant neck pillow around your neck, then you're kind of asking to get called out. All that said, if I ever did get called out about either of those things, I would probably (politely) argue pretty hard. Since these things are attached to your body during the flight, they aren't taking up any extra space in the overhead bins or under your seats, so it's ridiculous to charge extra for them. They are no different then wearing clothes with tons of pockets.

I just returned from a quick trip to Florida over the 4th of July weekend, and Airlines are cracking down on extra items such as blankets, stuffed neck pillows, fanny packs, and the like. They are being very strict and are telling passengers to ONLY have two bags, that's it. Also, if you think you can get away with a Starbucks bag or any other airport purchase bag and add more to it, don't do it. I saw several people getting busted for trying to do that as well.

As a pilot and the retired Health & Safety Chairman for Pan Am, I will NEVER wear synthetic clothes on a flight- they melt on your skin in case of any fire in an emergency. Also, you can use fabric paint to ‘decorate’ your baggage (it can even be tasteful)- that makes the bags very unique. Also, I ALWAYS keep the things I would be heartbroken if I lost in my possession at all times, never checked.

I used a bright pink hockey tape to wrap around the handles (but not the one that goes up & down) for my dark grey/black suitcase. Since it's hockey tape it will withstand lots of manhandling by airport personnel, and the bright colour really helped me see my bag on the carousel ASAP! DayGlo yellow or green hockey tape would work, too (Amazon has lots of this stuff). Cheaper than coloured luggage.

Great very true points brought up in your video. I also forgot to check pockets I never use on my backpack and was stopped once when going through security. I too prefer to have specific areas for my most important stuff like passport or wallet. It always goes in any of my clothing pockets that can be zipped or “Velcroed”. Lastly, my suitcases, even the carry-ons are always some bright color in case I ever have to check them in. Oh! And my backpack has its pocket facing my back, meaning, it is against my back and no sticky fingers can get to it unless I take the backpack off.

My gripe with ALL backpacks is the outside pockets. Who designed this! The packs should always have the pockets and zippers on the side against your body. I should start my own business. Also, they design backpacks with the slouchy pocket at the bottom and above that is wasted space. I dislike most backpack designs.

Good tips. I think I bring three pairs of long pants max for any trip now, and at least two of them are lightweight, multipurpose pants. Love the compression cubes. Agree that the smaller one is more useful than the larger one when it comes to a single person... however when you talk about a family of four, the amount of dirty clothes will accumulate, and having one of those large cubes to use as a traveling laundry bag isn't the worst thing in the world.

We brought folding hiking sticks to use in the mountains. On the way back to the US, Canada would not let us get on the plane with the hiking sticks. We had already stood in line for an hour and a half to get through to TSA. Our choice was to go back or to have them confiscate the hiking sticks. Is it this one that's not working for you? bit.ly/3vLp3jm You can also just search Unbound Merino - I just share that link because it's an affiliate link that helps support the channel 😇

Why use a stuffable pillow to bring more clothes? Aren’t you also allowed a personal item, such as a backpack, which you could put a lot more clothes into?!
@ProjectUntethered
@ProjectUntethered 20 дней назад
Just in case you need even more space or if your flying on an airline with impossibly low weight limits. Or if you're flying on a budget airline with only a personal item (and no carry on or checked bag) and you want some extra space).

Regarding not fully unpacking your bag.... you may or may not know but there has been 5 people (cruise passengers I think) arrested in Turks & Caicos for having bullets in their bags (that they previously used for hunting). Facing 12 YEARS in prison!

To be fair "oh I didn't know those were in there" is the excuse everyone turns to, including those who were actually doing it deliberately. The law can't just excuse someone for that.

Its their law and they are fully entitled to enforce. Its not a secret! If you "forget" you are carrying with bullets...well, wow. Maybe not travel to places where they are illegal. Duh.

If anyone is too irresponsible to know exactly where all the bullets they own are at all times, maybe they should consider whether they're too irresponsible to have bullets in the first place.

I was lucky and they let me fill out a form and held it for me in the lost in found until I got back. This was in Colombia though, not the US, so the procedures are a bit different.

Unfortunately, many US airlines are now counting a fanny pack as one of your carry-on items (regardless of class). We had to remove our fanny packs prior to boarding….as it gave us 3 items each instead of 2. (But, I put mine back on once I was seated and buckled in, and nothing was said about it.)
@ProjectUntethered
@ProjectUntethered 20 дней назад
Grr that's annoying. I always try to make mine super low key so it's not noticeable. Mine fanny pack is black, and I wear black clothes and swing it around behind my back (or have it under my jacket) when I'm at the check-in counters so it's not obvious.

Merino Wool is great for socks. Super itchy for shirts, though. Very uncomfortable :\
@ProjectUntethered
@ProjectUntethered 23 дня назад
I thought that too with a shirt I bought several years ago, but the tank and underwear I have from Unbound Merino doesn't bother me at all. I also have their travel pants and noticed they were itchy right when I put them on for the first time, but it slowly went away after weaing for a couple hours. I can't speak for the other shirts though, still need to test.

I think the trick is to get merino wool blend shirts (I have a few) as they aren’t itchy though I am wearing my 100% merino t-shirt in my hotel room in Indonesia as I write this and not really very itchy.
@eladbari
@eladbari 23 дня назад
@@ProjectUntethered you think the itchy feeling went away by getting used to it? Not noticing it? Or there's a "breaking in" period for it?
@eladbari

@@dotted8- What can Merino wool be blended with that's a good material? Can't really order such shirt online. You gotta try it on, see if it fits, if it's itchy. Spending 100$ on a Merino wool shirt online, having to send it back if it doesn't fit/feel well - is a bit of a hassle. I wonder if normal Merino wool shirts could be found easily in physical stores these days, or is it a needle in a haystack...
@dotted8-
@dotted8- 23 дня назад
@@eladbari I bought all mine online but if I put the name here, YT will delete the comment. I have a 53% wool/47% poly and a 53% wool/43% lycra (as well as a bunch of underwear 88 wool/12 nylon and socks unsure since labels removed). The blend underwear and socks are not itchy at all. I’m going to put a cryptic comment for the name of one place with free returns. Think of the opposite word for each for the name.

Keeping the minimum super important items (phone, ID, passport, necessary Rx, at least a few doses) is also a good idea in case of extreme emergencies where you'd have to evacuate the building, plane immediately and are not able or allowed to take anything!
