Modern takes on Ultra Magni (yes, I used a term for more than one ultra magnus) almost completely disgust me. And there are little to no third party takes for a cartoon accurate masterpiece scale Ultra Magnus with good articulation... Hopefully, Takara would release an U.Magnus 2.0 in masterpiece.
Thanks for the plug. It took me months to get that calculator to be flexible enough to suit our needs. It feels nice to have my work put on blast in such a positive way.
That fucking Simpsons reference at the start is the stuff I love about your skits. Either some inside lore jokes, a goofy parody of a classic scene, refs to other media, all good, with AMAZING animation. I was astonished at how the Core Ginrai Magnus flipped into his armor. And I thought MP-36 dancing like Yakko Warner was the best thing ever
19:45 these "guns" were actually to emulate Cybertron 2005 Optimus heels, given that Siege Ultra Magnus is a retool of Cybertron Siege Optimus they kept these as your standard rifles, but they really don't work as rifles for neither Cybertron Optimus or Magnus, they're just here because it's leftovers from the "original" figure
They're also part of the reference to RID Ultra Magnus. They represent the parts behind the cab that RID Magnus' weapon would plug into in robot mode and for Omega Prime above the head. They're meant to go where Lazy Eyebrow has Siege's missiles during the vehicle segment.
Never had the Combiner Wars Magnus, but I always wanted it because it's basically everything I want in a modern Ultra Magnus. A big red, white, and blue robot with huge shoulder towers that turns into a semi truck with a car carrier trailer as one vehicle. Because THAT'S Ultra Magnus! I don't care about the inner robot mode that's just a white Optimus Prime! I mean, how often is he portrayed that way in the comics? Like, once? At least the IDW comics did something new and different with the inner robot form. So, once I have the extra cash, I'm gonna track down the Combiner Wars Magnus, or better yet, the Takara Legends Magnus since it has an IDW More Than Meets The Eye comics accurate color scheme. Red thighs, darker shade of blue, and the Autobot symbols are on his shoulders instead of the spot on the chest, and as an added bonus, the Minimus Ambus figure is recolored into Alpha Trion and I think that's pretty cool.
Takara Legends is a great version. While I'm personally not fond of the red thighs from the original toy, the extra blue, yellow, and red on the shins break it up enough that it doesn't bother me. I do still wish his blue was as dark as the promo photos would have you believe, and as dark as Kingdom's dark blue, but it's not a bad shade. Do paint the white forearms blue, though, especially if you can't (and at this point cannot possibly be able to) track down the upgrade parts, it helps with the color balance immensely. Failing that, go for the Platinum Edition Autobot Heroes. Even if you can't get him on his own, you still end up with four more amazing figures if you don't already have them
I owned the original G1 Ultra Magnus growing up and I have to agree. Never understood why the small white Prime. Never saw him like that in the cartoon. Still, he was one of my faves :)
@@JoybuzzerX The worst thing is that the movie had the PERFECT opportunity to integrate that glaringly obvious feature of the original toy: Rather than a fakeout death on Junk, what the Sweeps destroyed, and he surprisingly survives as a white Optimus. Redesigned head so as not to look too much like Optimus, maybe, but point is, he's not a death that cheapens the previous culling. It also plays into his leadership inadequacy issues, that he's not confident without his armor, and Hot Rod rebuilds his character while the Junkions rebuild his armor. Double character development AND advertising the main gimmick of his toy: THREE birds, one stone
You go above and beyond for every review. I never know which amazing parts that I should comment on. However, for this episode it's clear what I need to praise. And that Ultra Magnus roller skating. My life is richer for having seen and heard that bit.
I definitely had fun making that. fun fact, the shot wasn't possible with Kingdom as the remolded stairs removed the ability to point the legs backward for the animation
21:55 the grey thing you folded up does have a use in robotmode, there are white tabs on CoreMagnus’s shoulders that they tab into. You slide them on and then lock them into place with the tabs.
The guns with siege magnus is more for the siege leader Optimus prime to recreate the leg cannons that the Cybertron/galaxy force Optimus prime had in super mode.
Likewise CW Magnus' guns look weird because they're designed to be the guns for 'Powermaster' Titanmaster Optimus, who uses the same mold. They just gave him the missile pods instead of the shoulder guns, and made them all combine to make a hammer.
I think the Siege Magnus' guns are also supposed to be attached right behind the cab in vehicle mode on both sides to emulate details that the 2001 Robots in Disguise Magnus has there.
@@SwiftpawWolffox No, that's not true at all. CW Magnus came out WAAAY before TR Optimus. The rifle CW Magnus comes with is actually somewhat based on his G1 rifle, just very modernised. The other one is mostly just meant for the hammer function, while also being able to be wielded as a gun.
The thing about the Fansproject core robot is that it was originally designed for Titans Return Power Master Prime. So it's aesthetically designed to be the core robot of Power Master Optimus Prime / Super God Masterforce Ginrai. The foe chest is even accurate to the original toy and the way Ginrai Transforms in the show, where he carries the front of the truck on his back. Perfect effect just repainted it white because back then people were more open to companies taking design liberties and not being so faithful to their G1 likeness. As for the hatred for CW Magnus, I don't get it, He has presence, good proportions, a fun transfomation and personally for me Magnus not being a white Optimus Prime is a good thing. The only media Magnus was seen as an Albino Optimus Prime in IDW was in the Dreamwave comics, not even the Netflix showcased him as such. White Optimus Prime is always a symbol of lazy repaints by Hasbro and I don't want that to be his identity as a Character. Having the cab be incorporated into the transformation of CW Magnus is so creative and well executed while Siege Magnus is voyager coaplayer wearing a white body suit and an armor made of cardboard boxes pretending to be a leader. Cw Magnus is flawed for sure, but not nearly as flawed and underwhelming as his subsequent releases.
Very well said! I was not collecting mainline figures when CW was coming out, but after Kingdom Ultra Magnus' alt mode was so disappointing I ended up getting the CW version on ebay. It's my favorite Ultra Mags beside the Masterpiece one.
I honestly think White Optimus fits more as just that, White Optimus. Maybe it's a wiser version of our prime coming back after ages and ages of being exiled or a Gandalf situation with him dying and getting revived as a more powerful and stronger White Optimus. Maybe even use it as your usual Shattered Glass Evil variant as an Optimus that is so so evil not even Black fits his sickness
I might like the Legends repaint of CW Magnus better, but I'll gladly take CW over Kingdom. Can't wait for the new Commander class figure and see what it does.
@@nathangitz2674 I hope the rumor I´m about to tell you doesn´t break your heart, but supposedly th upcoming commander UM is ditching the core robot gimmick completely, in order to have a much more articulated armored Magnus.
I grew to like the RiD series immediately after seeing clips of it every once in a while. So having Siege referencing the truck did it for me. And the armour gimmick does add to the RiD lore that Optimus and Magnus were once similar but after prime was given the matrix instead, Magnus built himself armour to compensate for the missing matrix he thought he was destined for. So many people demand perfection, they forgot the original G1 figures they praise needed a lot of imagination to be fun.
Yeah, but toy companies back then weren't anticipating that a lot of kids would grow up and still be collecting toys of a franchise that they probably didn't even think would still be around to this day. As kids back then, our expectations for toys weren't as high so it didn't bother us that a lot of them were pretty much bricks with some articulation but times have changed and even kids nowadays expect better.
Combiner Wars Magnus was always my favourite, and I'm talking about the base figure, not the modified one. Reasons being that the White Magnus wasn't really ever shown in proper media except for a few comics, so him being one cohesive unit just makes sense to me and allows the figure to be more put together and not a figure with scaffolding slapped on it, and the Minimus Ambus figure that came with it making it IDW based was a really nice touch as well
Agreed. I like both (all 3) styles! But I will admit that improvements can be made... I enjoy Siege for its reference to Robots in Disguise 2001 and being a Cybertronian vehicle I like the G1 robot mode of Kingdom I LOVE the transformation of Combiner Wars!! I never liked the "armor" aspect of Magnus because he wasn't like that in the G1 cartoon. I understand that it references his original toy; but it's just a personal preference on my part. For me the "perfect" Ultra Magnus would be the Combiner Wars molded/styled in the likeness of Kingdom bot mode without being "armor" and updating the ankle and head articulation
There are those who irrationally hate IDW with a passion, and not necessarily coz they're Geewunners, though there are. But most of their complaints focus on the fact that it's the IDW design and he doesn't have enough joints rather than..say..recognizing that his transformation is exceptional. And it's rather hypocritical, really. People slobber over Earthrise Starscream coz he's an Earth mode and an upscale of the Classics, whose transformation, as covered in this channel, is fine, great for its time, but has not aged well. By contrast, there's nothing about CW Magnus' mechanism that is as outdated, and can only be improved by being made of "better materials" and having joints it most certainly can have and does need (waist, wrists, ankles)
I don't hate CW Magnus and think it's a very nice design. However, what turned me away from wanting to get the figure is solely that the truck cannot detach from the trailer and turn into the white Optimus Prime re-color. I feel that's the area in which hurts the figure, especially since if they had CW Magnus be a truck with detachable trailer because I love how CW Magnus has the truck able to turn with the trailer and if the truck was detachable would've led to a way better Seige/Earthrise Magnus. I picked up Seige Magnus just because I like the Cybertronian design, enjoyed RID 2001 (enough to buy RID Ruination), and been lacking in an Ultra Magnus figure to my list of characters.
@@ZackarySchejbalCODBO2RGM2 that’s fair. I love rid 2001 aswell and while I don’t mind, I can understand the core robot being important to some people. I also like the armor up gimmick. Then you may be wondering why I prefer CW. Main dealbreaker on seige is the proportions are so bad. Maybe I would’ve preferred siege of it had an extra centimeter of thigh length. Plus while siege just takes G1 frame and adds surface detail, CW has a completely different(and imo better looking) silhouette and has different angles and shapes that make it interesting
Honestly, and this is coming from someone who loves MTMTE, he just seemed very thin and hollow when I got him. I bought him well before they revealed WFC, but idk, something always felt off about him. His truck mode as well just didn't do it for me. I don't really care for the weapons he comes with either honestly, and I could never get him to hold them properly (admittedly that might just be my fault). I would've gotten rid of him but I created a CHUG IDW shelf so he's still with me lol.
Sorry if somebody already said, but the Guns on Siege were for the Galaxy Upgrade Prime Remold, which had the weird Hexagonal Leg Guns in it's original Cybertron toy too
I remember seeing when Kingdom Magnus was announced and I thought it looked spectacular. I haven't really taken a look at it since it was announced, and now that I'm doing so... Good LORD what did I ever see in this thing? Now I just feel bad for skipping out on the siege mold, Kingdom is just a mockery of the character.
I literally agree with every word of this review. CW still my Magnus too, with that Core Fighter upgrade. IF you ever get the chance, get the x2toys xt009 set too. The feet alone are worth it.
I ended up customizing my siege Magnus and I’m very happy with how it came out. His robot mode looks perfect and after painting extra white around the windows it looks much more like a stylized earth truck which is super neat IMO. Thanks for this review as always!
That was a really extensive review with every nitty gritty explored on the figures. That sneeze animation at 33:38 made me chuckle for a few minutes XD
Finally someone said it! I'm so sick of everyone priasing Kingdom Ultra Magnus, purely for the robot mode (which isn't even that much different from siege ngl). It's overrated garbage in my opinion.
I mean, I still prefer Kingdom for his appearance, but just because it looks better (and even that's subjective and debatable), it doesn't mean it IS better, I totally agree.
I honestly don’t mind Kingdom Ultra Magnus (including the truck mode, despite its flaws). The funny thing is that truck mode still, in my opinion, feels more coherent then Platinum Edition Weaponizer Ultra Magnus.
I think what people dislike with the CW magnus is the lack of modern articulation with wrist swivel and ankle pivots. Not to mention his weapons attach loosely on his hand. Despite that however its functionally better as an Ultra Magnus toy that has better playability in vehicle mode.
I personally don't see why so many people fixate on things looking g1. I like the idea of having figures from different origins and series, makes it more interesting
My GOD that intro killed me, ngl while Siege Magnus looks decent, the IDW design will always be my definitive Modern Magnus. Plus your animating is top notch as usual man- keep up the awesome work!!!
I absolutely love Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus. It's a nice "evergreen" Magnus. No, it isn't G1, but it's not supposed to be. It's a Generations toy. I also love the brighter colours that the CW Magnus. And I personally don't mind the lack of a White Prime, I don't like that aspect of Magnus anyway, I prefer the White Prime and the "Armour" to all be one guy.
I have the OS KO of Siege Ultra Magnus and it is so barely oversized it still doesn't hold cars any better. Instead of one and a half it's one and three quarters. But I wanted a cybertronian mode and that was the largest cab available.
Lazy Eyebrow, THANK YOU. That is EXACTLY what I thought of Kingdom Magnus. A cube forced into a circular slot...and it either barely fits, or the cube was crudely carved into an ugly cylinder to fit the slot. I also do not get the praise for this. And I'm happy you too call him a Commander-class Ultra Magnus! I will give the Kingdom one this. I actually think it looks good. I prefer the darker blue, and, truth be told, the slightly smaller height difference between him and Optimus. But...that's about it. Oh, and an actual waist and wrists that you needed an even more outdated and stupidly rare upgrade kit to fix on the CW Magnus (and those under arm panels that limit any handle longer than the hand itself). But those are certainly not worth everything else about the SiegeDom Magnus mold. Whatever nagging issues I have about CW Magnus' size, missing articulation, and colors, even aged plastic quality, they all always melt away when I go thru his transformation and that I can PLAY, repeat, PLAY with a car carrier design. If Kingdom Magnus was more like NewAge Octavian, I'd have been more open to upgrading to that. For the record, I have the Takara version, which has the toy-accurate red thighs, more of the trailer frame being blue, and said blue being darker (though not as dark as promo pics would have you believe). Thanks for finally covering this! Enjoy the KBB Core Magnus!
I always hear that the main excuse for a less than convincing cybertronian alt mode is “Well how do you know that’s not what it’s supposed to look like? It’s an alien vehicle.” But I prefer to look at it from a practical point of view. I see the Cybertronian vehicle modes (mainly with Siege) as just not meant to be a disguise. Rather than meant to help hide, the alt modes are really just to get around faster. From that angle, Siege Magnus’ alt mode is acceptable (even the cab). It’s purely for transportation convenience.
The extra weapons included with the Siege Magnus are mainly there for the Cybertron Prime remold. They’re supposed to be Cybertron Prime’s side leg canons.
I adore my Siege UM, and like my CW UM, I have thoroughly customized it. Painting the grill, head lamps and panel lines from the blue transparent plastic. A black wash all over the figure. Silver paint on several locations of the white robot and a few select locations of gold paint. Siege also released a weaponizer who becomes a hammer for Magnus.
I do like how Kingdom Magnus looks. That said, I would like a Ultra Magnus that has a trailer like CW's Ultra Magnus. Hopefully after Commander Class Motormaster is out, they'll use the Commander budget to make one of the best Ultra Magnus figures ever.
I’ve always wanted the Combiner Wars Magnus but I feel like it’s too big for my current collection. So I opted to (eventually) get the Transformers Prime Beast Hunters Ultra Magnus. It’s a great figure, and I recommend you to buy it if you like the show or the designs of TFP.
This kingdom Magnus is a complete joke in vehicle mode, but I'll give them this: the bits that resemble a cabover are actually pretty good, it's essentially MP10 style with a big bumper, which I really appreciate! The details are very nice and I honestly wanted to see ER prime with this style of detail. Only problem is the rest of the figure where this cool tooling is attached to, it's just so blatantly Magnus sitting down with his arms back, there's not even a way of hiding the hands and it really starts to diminish the cool parts with these gaps and rounded platforms
@@conorburke1999 If you have to do that in the first place, it's a bad design element in the first place, cut budgets or no. It certainly works, but again, the fact that you have to do that at all...
Hands down the best TF reviewer on RU-vid! The stop-motion quality is amazing and considering how much work you more than likely put into it, that alone makes these videos so much worth watching. But you go even further with the hilarious comedy sketches and great reviews as well! Keep doing what you're doing. I definitely want to dabble with stop-motion and make videos just for my own interest.
CW Magnus certainly had its issues (feet, non 5mm port hands, guns that were odd design choices) but I have thoroughly enjoyed him for as long as I've owned him. I do like the look the add-on kit gives him, so may need to look into finding a set. WFC magnus has not impressed me since it came out, either version. I totally give props for the attempt, but that's all I can say, they were an attempt.
Man.... Siege UM was heavily discounted at the retail stores here alongside the WFC Astrotrain in the "deluxe" scale from 80USD to just 26USD + tax. These toys are still shelfwarming even at that price...LOL.... Combiner Wars UM for the win!
I personally preferred the kingdom mould for the robot mode and that crisp white paint. I always hated when figures are given yellowed (or grayed in this case) white paint, as it always made them look uncared for.
The reason as to why the perfect effect truck cab has the chest on the back is because I’m pretty sure that it was also for the power master optimus prime toy that they had. The g1 toys transformed differently to be different from the OG optimus prime and thus that’s how he transformed in super god master force
Yeah, well...I'll stick with my Siege Ultra Magnus. I can see the Powermaster Optimus Ginrai homage in that third party core Magnus. Take the truck bumper off? Blasphemous!
My favorite so far is CW because it was those comics that made Magnus one of my favorite Autobots, I loved how hard they went with "this is an IDW Ultra Magnus"(which makes TR Hot Rod NOT being IDW sting even more). I got Siege as the Spoiler Pack one as it was heavily discounted here, reaching as low as $20, so I can't 100% fairly judge it, but for what it's worth, I think it's the best execution of the "voyager size with accesories" leaders we've gotten, because the extra stuff was fully interactive with both modes in a way that made sense, not like Shockwave whose extra bits only really work in ship mode. ER is bad, I like the lightpiped head, but everything else about it is a flagship example of Hasbro cutting corners to maximize profit. All in all, CW is the better *toy.*
I have the Takara Legends Magnus version. When Siege came out, I was considering replacing him, but wasn't sold on it. Once I saw that Kingdom wasn't any better, I was glad I kept him as he still works well, even if he isn't perfect. I never knew people hated the CW/Legends version so much.
I'm watching this shortly after the announcement of a G1 commander class Ultra Magnus. I'm hoping that someone makes a video like this including that one when it eventually arrives.
As someone who's always prefered the comics to the cartoons (Marvel G1 comics over the G1 cartoon, IDW over pretty much everything else), the CW Ultra Magnus is my choice as well. Would I have liked a white optimus as well? Sure, but I'm not about to sacrifice the Minimus Ambus to get one. I don't have any nostalgia for the white optimus at all. The feet are a weak point on the CW figure, and there's some articulation issues to be sure. But I still haven't seen a figure that does what I want better than the CW one. Especially since "what I want" includes the IDW aesthetic and Minimus Ambus =)
I partially agree, and definitely don’t think Siege/Kingdom deserves the hype. Combiner Wars is one of my favorite molds ever, and mine is still stock. The cab doesn’t look super G1, but the rest of the truck is so good that I don’t even care. Siege was an easy pass cuz I care more about G1 Magnus, and I thought the mold fit Galaxy Prime better anyway. But Kingdom was a dilemma for me, since I honestly really like the Robot mode. The cartoon colors just really do it for me, despite the awkward chonk. So I’ve resolved to keep Combiner Wars as my vehicle Magnus, and Kingdom as my Robot. I do like them both, and I still think CW is a great option, and doesn’t deserve the hate.
