Your discussion about not really being able to tell someone how to brake is interesting. Years ago when I was trying to learn to race a dirt modified, I asked a similar question to the successful veteran who I bought all of my parts and supplies from. His answer was more or less the same, I have no idea what I do with my feet-I just do it.

After racing, crewing bikes with data, and teaching racing for many years, I've become very wary of people who state unequivocally they are doing this or that when it comes to skills practiced at the limit. However, a bike with full data, and a team of engineers can quantify a good bit of the control inputs.

This is why it's not enough to find a teacher that's fast. They have to be not only be able to articulate what to do, but deliver an actionable strategy to make it learnable.

I'm a bit of a late bloomer at 52 and I have only 4 race days under my belt. I'm afraid to use the brake. I just get up on the tank and lay the bike down then get on the throttle as soon as possible, but I was on a track with a loose top that was causing sliding and I found that I could get the bike pointed back up the track faster when the back slid about 8 inches in the end of the turn so I want to try. Other riders tell me they drag their foot on the brake to control the back wheel but that means nothing to me and I can't think that fast when I'm on the track.

Thank you for the great content, I'm starting on my REAL flat track journey with an XR100 that's got all the goodies. I've been racing cross country and playing with XR 100's for years but it's time to go race them for real.

This was another great and timely discussion, Mike. As you know, I've only been riding flat track for a couple years now and I've been searching online for any answers/guidance regarding the use of the rear brake, but have found NO answers. Many times I've stood at the end of a straight just to watch how and when other riders are using the rear brake. I have discovered exactly what you guys described - some riders use it and some riders don't. I have only recently started using the rear brake to help get the bike yawing as I enter a corner.

I learned on brakeless vintage bike. Don't need no brakes. Not that I would know how to use them if I did ride a modern bike.

Many times we have no answer, or the wrong answer. That's why we need engineers and data.

One thing I learned at Supercamp was my overuse of the rear brake. I was locking the rear before the turn and running deep. I "screwed up" in one corner and started leaning the bike before going to the brake and was shocked that I didn't lock up the rear. That's when it started to click that it's more than just braking that slows you down.

Turning in, then applying brake is so counterintuitive.

I just got back from Supercamp and I couldn't get the hang of it. I just couldn't get scrubbing. I don't even know where to begin to practice at home in the dirt.
@pasoduc1

@@avinashr9649 practicing at home can be hard. I lucked out with a short track being fairly close by that I can practice at. It's definitely something that has gotten easier the more I've tried doing it.

I would consider letting go of the goal to actively push the front tire. Maybe work on lean angle and increasing corner speed. As you get more and more laps focusing on lean and cornerspeed, one day you will just have it happen. It takes many, many laps. Keep at it!

@@FlatTrackFactory Really appreciate the support, and knowledge. Are there any specific types of very small layout/track configuration I could have within 1 acre to practice with? My little track is pretty small, and I'm not sure I can get up to speed...or I just need a slicker material ? Would it be easier to swap out to a dirt track rear tire on my dirt bike, with knobbier up front?
