This is an in depth tutorial on how to teach your puppy to be calm and relaxed when being handled and petted. The tutorial also covers how to manage and prevent puppy biting as well as what to do if your puppy does bite you or become mouthy. I will be shortly making another tutorial on how to teach your puppy to not bite your clothes or the leash. However I do have an older video on that you can check out if you simply cant wait.
The third step requires the puppy has a few other skills under his belt. You can train them all as soon as you get your puppy. And then after a couple of weeks add all the skills together. My puppy in the video I had been training for 2 weeks already when we were demoing step 3. As you can see, calm handling pays off!
The first exercises to work with your puppy on along side handling exercises are:
The default leave it from treats in your hand or bait bag- • No Mugging - What to t...

This should be mandatory for all new dog owners. Brilliant as always and Halo is too cute. I'd never have thought of step 1 and the tip about calm treat delivery seems so obvious now. This is a great handling exercise puppy or otherwise. Broken down further, would make a great counter conditioning process for those dogs who need it. (I'm thinking for one of mine who tolerates handling and could be helped made to feel a lot more comfortable). Thank you as always !

Thanks. Our new puppy is extremely mouthy and she is now 13 weeks old. We tried the "saying ouch" (which really doesn't work), not giving attention (where I put my hands away and stay still until she calms down), redirecting, and putting her back in her own play area. The stop giving attention, redirecting, or putting her back in her area works some for play biting. However, she gets very mouthy with petting and I had not seen any solutions to this. We can hardly ever hold or pet her without her biting. Now I'm going to use your methods to address the mouthing behavior since most of it seems stemmed from her being excited and curious. We have never had a puppy like this and our previous puppy didn't hardly go through any teething issues. We have been using Kongs and a few other chew toys.

I adopted a 50 lb puppy; he hasn't been neutered and is almost a year old. I am able to redirect to a chew toy. He brings it near me and transfers from the chew toy back to me. I get up and leave the room. When I reenter he's waiting and "ambushes" me. I leave the room again. When I return, he's sitting in my chair. To avoid him using getting me to leave to take my chair, I have started standing and calmly saying enough. He will then select a chew toy from the ones already on the floor, or go lay down on his bed or lay down by the front door. I say yes, but don't treat as it produces excitement even using less stimulating rewards like his kibble. Thor is a lab shepherd mix and a little undersized for his age. He is very smart. Sometimes it is almost like he is modifying my behavior! Lately when I start to stand, Thor jumps up throwing his whole body weight at me knocking me back in my chair! He is not being aggressive; his body language is playful. I am a dog trainer. Thor every technique I have successfully used with other puppies and older dogs don't seem to work with Thor. The plus side of my experience with Thor is going to make me a better trainer. The thing is, I am extremely limited as to what I can use as a positive reinforcement. Food excites him, toys excite him, a scratch behind the ear is exciting, eye contact excites him. I am limited to capturing foundation behaviors using verbal praise only. Thor limits his puppy biting to me. He is very friendly towards girls and women. He is more shy around men; Thor either stands by my side or slightly behind me. I instruct them to let him choose to come to them. Let him sniff; it's not necessary to stick your hand out. If Thor chooses not to come to them, I ask people to respect Thor's choice. In a strange way I suppose I should be complimented that Thor chooses only to bite me. I guess it means that he trusts me.

goodness, that does sound like a lab puppy. A lot can be quite excited by food like that and also take the treats really hard. I suggest for the next few weeks to train AFTER he's just had a meal and avoid training when he's not had food for a while.You can also try to begin with lower value food, just as his kibble he eats, and then get him habituated to new foods by adding them to his dinner, so its not so exciting in the training. Here is a video about dogs who are too excited by food ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DR831Q2fv-U.html and one on take treats softly ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KXDWbtx44b8.html

@kikopup
@kikopup 4 года назад
write a list of the scenarios in which it occurs and use management and prevention and train your dog what you do want him to do in those scenarios. If its when you sit down and ignore to work on a computer or watch tv or cook, practice settle on a mat on leash, when you have to work or do something put the puppy in a large pen with toys and chews so that he cant run up and bite you while you are not paying attention.

@kikopup

I suggest being neutral and just quickly putting him in his pen with his toys. If your puppy is the type that might scream and bark when put in a pen when acting like this, you could sit inches away from the pen calmly reading a book etc to prevent it being some stressful event. Then the important part is to work on calm stuff daily like these handling exercises and the settle. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yr1olzgidMw.html

What will happen if I give my dog a lot of treats?
@kikopup
@kikopup 4 года назад
I suggest using part of his daily meal, if he likes his own food you can use those as treats if not use something small and healthy such as boiled chicken and other types of real meal. Rationing the treats per day and removing some of his food so he doesnt gain weight. If you feed a dog too much food they can gain weight as well as get diarrhea

Most likely he has spent his whole life chewing on stuff. So you will need to teach him as if he were an 8 week old puppy. Have a large pen to keep him in when you cant watch him that has stuff he can chew on like dog chews and then when loose make sure you are watching him 100% of the time.

I was fortunate to be able to foster two 8 week old puppies for several weeks and observe how they handle hard bites from one another. One would give a big yelp if bitten too hard, and it does not stop it would snap at the other puppy to get it to stop. Humans should just give out a stern loud NO to the puppy if bitten too hard, and if it continues just stop and give the puppy a time out by holding it's mouth firmly (but not enough to hurt it) and not letting it move for a few seconds and say no. Eventually, it will learn to inhibit it's bite.

@kikopup
@kikopup 4 года назад
It is normal for puppies to growl. If the puppy growls during this training exercise I suggest reducing criteria to where the puppy looks calm and relaxed during the training. You can try using higher value treats but if the puppy is suddenly very aroused, you can also put the puppy in his pen and then do the exercise when he is calmer.

I just wanted to add a little tip that I have found is working really well in conjunction with your videos and advice about soft handling, taking treats softly etc: I have taught Bonnie 'Lick'. So now, when she goes to mouth me, especially if I can predict it's going to be a little exuberant, I say 'Lick', she licks, she gets a treat, and the bitey mini-crisis is over again.

But I think there is the extra benefit that I can use the cue 'Lick' when she actually has her nasty little nippers around my hand. She can nonchalantly turn bite into lick without losing face. (A moment or two ago she actually beat me to it, and turned bite into lick before I suggested it!). Your techniques are so, so good (I'm sure you know). I've been working on this, the biting at clothes and capturing calmness since I got my border collie pup about a week ago. He does SO well in training but has started nipping really hard if he knows I don't have the clicker or treats. Does he really know and differentiate between the two situations? I'm trying to keep him physically and mentally stimulated, enforcing naps and alone time but the past two days he's been downright CRAZY with the nipping. Just a puppy phase I'm hoping??

Hi Emily, I love your videos, but I have just watched a video by someone else who talks about 'ABI'. I had been doing what you suggest above, handling Bonnie gently while giving her treats, diverting her with training or toys or whatever. I thought it was working OK, but in between these sessions she can sometimes unexpectedly launch herself at me, and sink her teeth into my leg or breast or chin. Sometimes she gets really hyped up and won't stop, and it seems like the only interaction she wants with me is to bite me. So I watched a few other videos, and the guy was talking about a window of opportunity for the puppy to learn bite inhibition. He said that you have to let them do it or it is a missed opportunity and they will never learn not to bite hard. He said to say 'Ouch!' and keep on saying it, and doing this for weeks if necessary, until the strength of bite diminishes. I wonder what your take is on this? I have been trying it for two days now, but actually Bonnie doesn't really seem to care if I say Ouch! I have been getting louder and louder: sometimes it really does HURT and is genuine, other times she just ignores me, so I feel I have to do it loud enough for her to notice and if anything gets more excited than ever. She seems to get more persistent, just jumps at me, or bites harder, or snarls at me. I don't think I want to carry on doing the 'Ouch!' thing, as it's not doing either of us any good and it is not great for my neighbours in coronavirus lockdown either! But now I am really worried about this 'lost opportunity', 'got to do it' thing. I really like the way you are with your dogs, and your videos are like little magic wands. I would be so grateful if you could give us your take on the ABI thing, as you don't mention it at all. Thank you!

Hi PermaHeretic, its Dr Ian Dunbar that promotes the games where you gradually shape a puppy to bite less hard. And I love Ian Dunbar and respect his work. My thinking is on preventing rehearsal of biting humans completely. And the results Ive gotten is dogs that never get mouthy on humans when aroused. I do think bite inhibition is extremely important and for me the best way to train it is that the puppy played with littermates and mom and other dogs up until 8 weeks or more. That the puppy plays with other puppies or dogs who are a calm influence and have polite play manners, and for me most importantly the owner is working with training daily and feeding the puppy treats to the mouth in which the puppy learns to open and close the mouth delicately to take the treat- here is a video called take treats nicely which you can do if your puppy takes treats hard. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KXDWbtx44b8.html If your puppy is not taking treats hard that is a super awesome sign. What you describe where the puppy snarls and bites you sounds related to frustration and arousal but I of course am not there, and you could get help from a vet behaviorist if you start to worry its aggression. For me the root cause is over arousal and frustration. 1 - you need to prevent it happening as much as you can - write a list of times it happens and situations it happens in 2 interrupt it as soon as it starts 3 keep up the training where you are teaching your puppy not to bite and be calm when hands touch her, when shoes shuffle, when objects move, and lastly when you move. Here is a video on interrupting behavior ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yLr3ame9Ptk.html I would quickly pick up the puppy and put her in a large pen where she can play on her own, rather than be loose and bite you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-62NNwZtbtIA.html Start conditioning the collar grab, but dont try to use if for when the puppy gets mouthy because it most likely will make her more mouthy. But train this daily for 2 weeks so taking the dogs collar has a calming influence. That way in the future if your dog gets over aroused you can take the collar to help calm the dog down. If the behavior is frustration related and you use punishment it can have the potential side effect of the biting getting more severe.

I trained 2 of my dogs by distracting them with toys every time they started to bite and I wanted to try something new by training my most recent puppy by the ouch method. It worked for me to get him to stop biting as hard but he still sometimes will nip at my feet when he's feeling playful. My other 2 dogs didn't have this problem so I'd say I wouldn't worry too much about missing your window just try to get the puppy used to biting toys instead of extremities and the pressure of a bite won't matter because they will always know you don't bite people anyway. At least that is my experience, best of luck!

@@kikopup Thank you so much Emily, it is very kind of you to take the trouble to leave such a full reply. She has started to take the treats harder; she was very gentle at first, so I had been thinking it was time to watch that video. I think she does have different bites: the play mouthing, which is actually quite soft, and a snarly leap-at-me type - which I think, as you say, is over arousal, but also tiredness. She has a good go, then flakes out (just like toddlers do). I think that is the behaviour I should simply not allow, and set things up so it doesn't happen. I will look up the collar grab; I hadn't spotted that one. Unfortunately no puppy-club or playdates at the moment with coronavirus social isolation, but I bought her a pen which arrived today, and I think that will help. She seemed pretty happy in it earlier, without any training, just me working alongside - she actually chose to go and lie in her crate, which I thought was really sweet. Now I will make my way to your donation page, because I really value your advice and videos! Cathy

I 100% needed to see this today. We have a puppy that we mistakenly got early (6 weeks). She is a bully breed (pit mix). She is mouthy when over aroused. We are really training her to be calm in situations and manage her environment. I was trying to work on bite inhibition and when she is just calmly playing/mouthing she is gentle. When she is aroused / excited she bites. I have two children (3 and 8). They know to be calm but knowing and doing are two different things. So I have the issue of teaching a 9 week old puppy calmness around excitement. Plus trying to say ouch doesn’t work when she’s aroused. I’ve gone to this training method. Zero teeth on humans. It’s a process. I’ve been frustrated to the point of tears. Thank you SO MUCH for putting out this content.

I use their food when I can- kibble. But for some behaviors I need a higher value treat, so I use real meat or tiny bits of cheese or healthy hot dogs (turkey dogs I use the most). Sometimes commercial dog treats, but they tend to have a lot of weird added ingredients that are not healthy.

Hi, first I want thank you for all your videos, they helped us so so much. We made a mistake by training our puppy with food too much and too often. Now we have a situation that she bites us really aggressively when she wants treats. We decided to stop for a week with training in the house, and reinforce calmness, but the biting got really, really worse. it hurts so much we cry from pain. We are really lost and don't know what to do. Any ideas?

If the dog is not drawing blood or causing pain and its soft biting you can use the same games in this video. Obviously if your dog is actually biting you you'll need to hire a trainer to help you so you dont get bitten. Sometimes dogs mouth when feeling conflicted frustrated or excited. SO you have to know the situations it happens in and be prepared before hand to use management. You can also do training set ups where you teach your dog what you do want him to do in the situations he gets mouthy. here is a formula for solving unwanted behavior: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6vAk98000wc.html

YOU ARE A GENIUS. I watched a lot of tutorials and advices on this matter and to my knowledge you are the only one that recommend the handling approach, which makes a lot of sense. It inspired me something. As I would like to teach my puppy to give a kiss on on hand, I was thinking I could give her the command "give a kiss" when she bites to redirect her? Do you think it would be a good idea in this context? Thank you so much for your knowledge and your helpful videos. I am looking for the best solution as she likes to bite a lot. I am a very patient person, but my partner is not as half patient and get frustrated with her sharp teeth ;)

I'd not use licking as the alternate behavior. Id wait until shes older and not biting any more to get the trick of giving a lick on cue. This is because licking is so similar to mouthing, you could get a couple licks then a nip. It would be easier to teach ignore the hands and let them do what they are doing rather than lick them.

We're doing the handling exercises and it's working well. We can pat him now. However when the puppy gets over excited or frustrated (e.g. on a walk) he starts biting my legs so hard. I try to put him into a sit and down but he still attacks my legs afterwards and breaks skin. Can I tell him to stop? I can't even put him in a pen to chill cause he's trying to bite my hands and my face :( 2,5 month old Akita

Hi Daria, I really do suggest getting help from a trainer. I can't help with this sort of thing online but another trainer I know does online consults for this - www.completecanines.com/michael-shikashio/ This is a problem you really need help with because if it keeps getting rehearsed your dog when he gets frustrated or aroused can start mouthing and biting and the size of your dog makes it extremely important to seek help. Using punishment can actually in some cases cause the side effect of more biting. So the most important plan is preventing the behavior to begin with using management and getting help from a trainer you can come up with a great plan for management and behavior modification.

I don’t know how to exercise my puppy. I have a 10 week old hound mix. He is very bitty especially at feet/pant legs. I’ve done a lot of training with him from day one (got him at 8 weeks) He is good with giving me his attention and coming when I call, sit, lay down, touch, and pretty good with sit/stay/and leave it. But that’s all while he is in training mode. When he gets over stimulated he won’t listen to anything. I try very hard to not over stimulate him. Sometimes I can predict when he will attack but a lot of time he will be perfectly calm and then just go crazy on my legs. And of course when I pull him off (because he won’t listen to any commands) he becomes aggressive. My problem with lack of exercise is this, when we are outside all he wants to do is attack my feet. So I do trainings to get him to sit and stay and leave my feet alone, which he will do well and he will listen but the problem is he is only focused on me and getting the treats. I try to get him to play. I have balls and tugs and frisbees even puzzle games for mental stimulation. But he doesn’t want to play with the toys he just wants to either attack my feet or do training for treats. If I ignore him he try’s to go for my feet, if I try to engage with him with a toy, he try’s to go for my feet’s. And yes I have him on a leash at all times outside and inside. The only time he doesn’t have a leash is if he is in his play pen or kennel. Yesterday I tried giving him alone time outside for the first time and all he did was look for me and cry at the door that I left through. I only let that go on for like 5 minutes before I steps back out. The only thing I can think of is to keep working on getting him comfortable with being outside on his own cause I don’t know how else to get him exercise and I hope that if he had more exercise he would be less bitty and aggressive. This is very very frustrating. We just bought a house with a big fenced in back yard and I never thought in a million years I would have a problem of not knowing how to exercise my puppy cause all he want to do in bite me or do training for treats. Not interested in toys, not interested in exploring on his own. Please please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 года назад
That sounds really frustrating. I suggest when you leave him leave him and cant watch him in a large pen and not a crate, with a bed area and toys. To encourage him making choices and playing with the toys. I suggest getting a toy on a string- you can make this and drag it around (when there are no treats present) to see if the movement excites him. I suggest for walks just begin with treats and being focused on them. you can feed him for position like in this video instagram.com/p/CHbuvgUnh7C/ Then you can sprinkle a few treats in the grass and teach him to search for them. This will get him sniffing and exploring in the grass. If he looks up at you the whole walk, choose those moments that he turns his head to look at something else for a milisecond and use that time to tell him hes good and then move to feed a treat.

Our puppy gets very excited after she sees us even if we are gone for just 15 minutes. When she comes to greet us she bites us playfully in places like our hands and ears. Can you please help us solve this issue? She is very friendly and she has started to do this when guests come over too.. Thanks! You and your sweet little team are awesome!
@kikopup
@kikopup 5 лет назад
I suggest acting calm when you first open the door you can drop treats on the way to go outside to go to the bathroom. Then if you want to "say hi" to the puppy wait about 10 mins after you have come home to tell your puppy how much you love them... and the puppy will be calmer and less likely to bite. You can also practice in training sessions talking to your puppy in a high pitched excited voice and marking and feeding for not jumping or biting- because most likely guests will slip up and do exciting stuff. Keep up the handling exercises in the training session as well it is so important. When guests come over you could first begin with the puppy on leash getting treats for seeing them but not getting to say hi until calmer, or you could begin with little walk together outside before they come in.

Hi Emily. Thanks for making this video. I've been using these handling exercises and they have helped me teach our 10-week old puppy to let us pet her gently without biting and use handling to calm her down. I do still have one issue I am trying to find a solution to. She likes to bite my feet, but not my wife's feet. I'm not sure what is different that makes her prefer to bite my feet. Neither of us wear shoes because we haven't conditioned her to leave shoes alone yet. What would be the best way for us to seek advice from yourself or another trainer like you on how to work with her to reinforce not biting my feet? Thanks in advance.
