I wanted to test out the snow accumulating effects of applying ice melt and rock salt to my driveway prior to a snow storm so I cleared a portion of my driveway to compare the two products side-by-side.
In the end I got a lot less snow than I anticipated but I could clearly see a diminished accumulation of snow in the areas of application compared to the adjacent area of the driveway that received no ice melting agents of any kind.
For lawn buffs make sure to see this video where I show the effects of ice melt on the lawn when you aren't careful: • THIS Is What Ice Melt ...

I recently started doing a quick coating of a molasses and salt Brine on my sidewalk. While it may need to be reapplied occasionally, it is relatively cheap and it helps the rock salt stick to the sidewalks better without washing off.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 года назад
Now that is a really cool idea that I may try this month for the fun of it! Does the molasses make the sidewalk feel sticky? Or does the water/moisture levels keep the stickiness undercontrol?
@jaket6007
@jaket6007 2 года назад
@@TurfMechanic The molasses does not make it feel sticky, Nor have I experienced any sort of staining on my brand new concrete. 1.5# of salt and 12oz molasses(one small jar) per 1 gallon of hot water. You can add more salt until it stops dissolving to ensure you have the lowest freezing point. If I'm expecting a lot of ice I will occasionally do a light drizzle of rock salt over top of it while it dries so it sticks to the molasses better. My dogs also are not licking the molasses off the ground so that does not seem to be a concern.

This is pure gold - you can be sure I'm going to try this and film it too! Thanks Jake!

The problem I find is that once the salt is down you are committed to it melting. There are multiple times when my backpack blower can remove dry snow in 1/10th the time before it warms up and gets sticky. If I salt it’s automatically sticky.

The first rule on building or buying a home is access! If it depends more maintenance during storms, there is a reason that sellers are bailing out, if it is because you built it or had it built, bad engineering on your part!

The only thing I dislike about salt is what it does to your car. It’s the reason I would never buy a car from the East or any state that regularly salts their roads. Nice test though.

Honestly Chris, I do agree, despite what I said in this video. Our town doesn't salt roads and although lots of people complain about that no one's vehicles are rusting out. Around here, we don't get snow every week, just a few significant times per season but dustings are more common. My drive is a north face driveway that gets very little sun and it very steep. Our car with studded tires has slid off the pavement onto the hill a few times over the years so preemptive salting of the curve in our situation is a minimal risk to the car imo. Pure Mag Chloride would be better for the car but it's hard to fine locally for a reasonable price...so salt it is when we need something there. 💁‍♂️

@@TurfMechanic I agree. Definitely use when needed. I’d just wash underneath the cars shortly after when the snow is gone. I’ve seen my cousins cars in Alaska and salt definitely does a number on the under package and wheel wells.

Happy New Year Brian! Enjoyed the video. Made me laugh watching your kids. Here in the northeast we got hit today with the coldest day yet. I use Winter Heat Calcium Chloride Pellet Ice Melt which does an okay job. We got a snowy/icy mix on Sunday so I got it down day before. But like you said, it does limit the amount of snow/ice that sticks - if it’s a light snow fall. I’m still enjoying the content so thanks!

Have you tried that overpriced Yard Mastery Ice melt yet?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 2 года назад
I didn't realize they sold ice melt 🤷‍♂️ I've looked into getting some pure products online (Amazon mostly) instead of blends for my sidewalk by the lawn but so far I've only picked standard ice melt blends locally and just shoveled the walk since it's small enough and gets full sun most of the time. I also usually just use straight salt for lower driveway areas away from my main lawn for cost savings.

thats a steep driveway. Do you get it preofessionally plowed and salted? How do you keep it clear during winter?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
I always kept it clear myself. I used a battery snowblower (got videos on the channel about them) and occasionally salt brine which I started experimenting with last winter. we have lots of cold sunny days so if I could keep the driveway fairly clear the sun (even if it was 20 degrees) would burn off the rest. Only occasionally would we have to park at the bottom of the hill.

Hope your family had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Brian! FYI Last spring I found 20 lb bags of the Roadrunner pet friendly stuff on clearance at Wal Mart for a dollar! They were selling for like $9 I believe. Needless to say I loaded up so be on the lookout in your area this spring.
