i followed you from that contest about old english .about the grammer which you talked here and that just a few people talk like that so who is wrong and who is right/i think those small amount of people is right and if all of us were like them ,at the moment we only had one language with no even a dialect or accent so all of us could have understood each other many wars which started about making money but based on differences of people never held from the beginin,just like religion.we all know that many of wars happend just because some people wanted to earn more money but they used people's believes,if those people( i mean no one) believed in any religion then no one could make war between them based on their religions.so muses was a bad person who made a thing that caused war in the future and jesus was a bad person to o because he made another religion from the previous religion that was available before (also mohammad and islam) when you were listening to old english you could understand this more better that they are all the same and little changes during the time causes a lot of diffrences that makes old version completely useless and also many other diffrent things comes that kind of no familiar at all for new people.so instead of put rammer aside or change a word to another word or make pronounce change on it in our little socials like family and frinds(which causes big changes during the time)its better to be serious about some things instead of making fun of them. i understand the beauty of each language but i think we could make much joyfull funs from other things instead of make fun with word and changes them and make a new language which causes a lot of wars and murderers during the ages.spranto is the key for this problem

It depends on what your student may want from you as a teacher. If they want or need the exam certificate, then that's what they need to be prepared for as a priority, although not exclusively. Exam preparation is as much about strategy and exam technique as it is about everyday English. Some people might say that it would be better not to have such a narrow minded approach to educational qualifications, but for many students that is what they are faced with. If a student doesn't need or want officially recognised certificates of achievement, then there will be more scope for a wider approach to teaching and allow the teacher to focus more on why the student wants to improve their English and how are they going to use it in their lives.

@@redme7828 most English native speakers know very little about grammar, although they use it unconsciously. Many native English speakers also make mistakes in grammar, spelling and pronunciation. As long as we are able to communicate and understand eachother, then that is what is the most important aspect. Probably only lawyers and politicians need to use and understand grammar correctly, that way they can twist meanings and mislead people more effectively...

It's amaizing and extraordinary: '''break the rules, books are wrong" etc. But how is one supposed to learn a foreign language without actual learning of some basic information? What do you mean by saying every phrase is a brand new item? No offence but it sounds crazy. Everybody learns by repeating words, phrases and sentences, even native speakers. We all start from the very beginning as babies. We repeat the sounds we hear from our parents. And then everything you say is something you heard or read some day in your life. You say people should be creative - no problem. I say ''nowhere for an apple to drop"" Did you understand what I meant?? 99,9% of people wouldn't get my idea unless I say the actual English idiom: "There's no room to swing a cat". So here you'd probably say your part about "acceptable-unacceptable". And how a person could learn your "acceptable" without rules and books? The whole language is based on these rules and grammar and textbooks. "I'm loving it" is just an example of a tiny part of the language which doesn't mean grammar rules are useless as in thousands of other examples the rules do explain the way English works. Currently these rules are the only viable way to teach a language fast unless you can learn it as a native (spend 10ish years 24\7 in English speaking society with an experienced speaker who can guide you). And I haven't even started yet on topic of "real life". Exams are this real life. Job interviews are this real life. And if you say "I'm knowing English real goodly" during these real life things, you won't have the job or become a Harvard student. PS: I suppose I got this video's message and I see what your purpose was. But negation of foundamentals is just ridiculous. And I agree tests and exams are far from perfect. Unfortunatelly it's the only real way to examine students' competence in English. It's like democracy: it's not perfect, but humanity doesn't have anything better at the moment. But now the audience is like a bunch of lunatics: "yeah! Rules suck! I don't give a shit about English grammar" and so on. But I couldn't find here a reasonable suggestion what to use instead of grammar and rules and textbooks etc. Only vain excitement and useless hope to learn English in your weird and peculiar way
@andresbejarano5124
@andresbejarano5124 2 года назад
I am knowing English is precisely one of those examples that fall into the category of unacceptable, so point dismissed. No matter how eloquent you may sound, you missed the whole point of not placing your self worth on the results of a test that are just an inaccurate sample of your real competence. Language performance in a test is not the same as your overall linguistic knowledge and that is why language should be evaluated holistically whenever possible. People disregarding the importance of grammar all together are just another kind of extremists but becoming a grammar nazi is not healthy either.
@moni4industries563
@moni4industries563 2 года назад
@@andresbejarano5124 I'm not sure if this is an example of "unacceptable" as the phrase's meaning is completely clear so from the perspective of communication it's acceptable enough. What do you mean "holistically"? Correct me if I'm wrong but all decent modern English exams include tasks on listening, speaking, grammar, writing, vocabulary and whatnot. Does this evaluation seem insufficent to you? What is a better way to examine student's competence in your opinion? Because if you have any smart ideas the world needs your advice as far as tests aren't accurate enough. And BTW I don't see myself as "grammar nazi", I think grammar is as important as other aspects of a language. Or maybe even less important than pronunciation or speaking or vocabulary as for those ones you need a lot of memorizing and/or drilling whereas grammar is something a person is able to learn once and use it after it without much revising. What I really hate is teachers who say that communication is the only right way to learn a language as a native speaker. It's arguably not. It's awesome when your neighbour is a native speaker and is ready to speak Eglish with you for hours, but in most situations it's not the case. People sometimes need to pay for it. And even if you have a lot of communication - how does it help you read novels by Jack London, for example? Not much I guess. That's probably the point where you open a dictionary and a grammar book and start learning English in a good old way. Communication is just A language activity which is not better or worse than the other ones. And the teachers who claim otherwise are more of a hindrance than a help.

Not everyone can practice English with speaking as first step in order to this thank to the grammar books that contains sentences structure matching them with vocabulary. I myself improved my English because of these books & the teachers who presented them . I tried before to learn from movies and listening to English books but it didn’t work until I bought grammar books and enrolled to English online classes. That’s my point according to my experience.

You said in Jan of 2021 that you were going to make videos with truly practical content, and as much as I liked this video, I found it devoid of practical content, being more of a meditative, almost new-agey, touchy-feely, contemplative mantra. If you imagine yourself speaking to an audience of non-native English speakers, who at the same time truly grasp this video, then you are making videos for those who are already rather sophisticated English speakers. That is, you are making videos for those who have already overcome the systemic obstacles you are railing against.

Wow, thank you so much for such a powerful message I've been telling similar things to all of my students - that English is not a rocket science where there is always right or wrong, it's a creative act, and even to simplify things - English is just an instrument for you to share your thoughts with others, with the world. And it's way more important to actually make yourself heard than be anxious about whether what you say is correct 100% in grammar, pronunciation etc. Again thanks for the powerful message, I will definitely share this video with others.

What a vídeo! That's something I've been trying to make my students to understand. Before any Right or Wrong phrases, what's the most importante is communication! Once they loose the fear of speaking, they can start polish the way they speak. Thanks for the video! You Rock! 👏👏

Hi Christian. You're absolutely right! As far as I know, we're humans and not robots. Language is much more than rules and books, is life (real) converted into communication. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and helping us to see and act above and beyond. Cheers from Ottawa.

I totally agree with you, part by part. It is far better to see the beauty of the language as it is, not to be afraid of making mistakes, and understanding the true differences in culture, as Paulo Freire stated. It is sad that reality works in a unfair way. But there is hope

Mind blowing ! I just got speechless ! Thank you soooo much for this clip. You are waaaay beyond a great teacher. You are a true philosopher. In the true meaning of the word. A person always looking for answers to the questions about the true meaning of the things. Beyond the appearances. Questioning "the obvious" even when it is supported by majorities in the position of power stemming from the self-given authority in the form of copy cat universities diplomas. Thanks a lot for promoting the REAL English through the means of TRUE Speech. This is really great. Thank you.
