Getting a gig with a good band or a major artist can be awesome. You get to play great shows, help write cool songs and really hone your bass chops. But finding that gig can be difficult, and getting a place in that band can be even harder.

Common sense that every musician needs to follow: Always put the song/music first. Guitarists bassists and vocalists nowadays all tend to think of everything revolving around *their* part.

To many musicians play to loud for the vocalist

I saw this a lot in bands I've been in. Had a drummer that was the epitome of this. He literally never just played a straight forward, rock-style beat. Everything had to be an opportunity for him to show off

Sounds like your drummer should have been a front man/vocalist.

As an artist / producer i feel the same thing when it comes to players they have to look at the big picture and become part of the journey as a team , we have to be on the same place mentally in order to perform together flawlessly , that being said i own the same pair of headphones basically do everything with them recording mixing and mastering, they rock !!

Great perspective from what a creator would look for. I was thinking about the Dichotomy of playing for yourself vs the song the other day.

Being comfortable in your own skin. I do think that effects are playing in a group when you can be comfortable in your own skin and be yourself.

This an awesome interview, I think this guy is talking about me!

Finally, I don't know who this jacob guy is, but he's confirming what I commented on a video about "why most bass players suck" a few weeks back. I specifically commented that bass players and all musicians need to have "pocket groove" (timing rhythm). Plus he mentioned that you need to be creative and also be a good hang, this jacob guy knows what he's talking about. I don't mean to be cocky but after 30 years of music performance in LA as a bass player you need to groove and be in the 'pocket'. Hence, "pocket groove".

@@Kazzildo I don't know I just checked his shit out, and it kinda sounds even more mainstream than mainstream to me. In any case, obviously has a ton of hype to it, so he must be doing something right, but I really was absolutely clueless until just now. I dint know, I'm 43 years old, maybe it's forgivable

A bit of toss really, a bass player should be able to play on time and correct notes. Part of being in a band is that there are no individual's, you are part of a greater thing than yourself.
@buckemptier
@buckemptier 2 года назад
I don't think there should even be an expression like "in the pocket", if you aren't playing in time what the fuck are you doing, are you even a musician? It's so fundamental that there shouldn't need to be a designation like "in the pocket". Play on time or don't play at all.
