It's also a good idea to weigh the refilled canister to ensure it's not overfilled. The refillable ones are marked with the tare weight, so it's easy to determine how much product has actually been added.

what could happen if it is overfilled? will liquid propane possibly shoot out?
@irvnegrin2211
@irvnegrin2211 3 месяца назад
Actually, it is possible for propane to leak out through the pressure relief valve. This can create a potentially dangerous situation, especially if it's in an enclosed space like a vehicle.

@@Vid_Master - A liquid cannot be compressed when it gets warm, for example in a car. When you have too much liquid in it, there's not enough room to expand. When you lay it flat while filling, you never can overfill it.

Just a PSA for safety sake. Don't use rubber gloves when you're working with combustible gases. A buddy I worked with did this, didn't know there was a hole in the gloves and the gloves captured some acetylene. He lit the torch with a striker, along with his hands. Pretty bad burns.

You weight your bottles on a scale to the nearest gram after filling. If it is overfull, then release some thru the bleeder valve. If you can, it is best to use a weight scale when working with cannisters of any kind so you can know how much propellent you are putting inside the old can. Professional Air Conditioner service people use scales when emptying your system and then when refilling it to see safely how much is being transferred in real time.

Excellent information as always Leah! Propane fumes hang low in an enclosed area and can ignite with just static. A local cop in town went to get propane for a town hall summer barbecue in his pickup, one of the tanks was leaking in the truck bed and the plastic bed liner created a tiny spark and he ended up in the burn unit and out of work for many months. If you can do this outside. This is also a great way to keep all the containers out of the landfills. Leah for the win, AGAIN!

@@jerrymarasco683 there is a possibility to over fill them, and I'm guilty of that more than not. You eventually get the feel for it, and I suppose you could weigh it against a new one to be perfect. If they overfill and get hot the shrader valve will leak until the pressure is below the threshold. I've only had that happen once in thousands of refills. With that said, I kinda want one of them venting ones and the extended valve the come with it. Would be nice when you can't freeze. Oh, and if you can't freeze them and are in a pinch don't do what I do all the time. Fill it with a bit, then let that out real fast. The phase exchange of the gas will freeze the bottle pretty quick, like those air cans. Oh yeah, use a timer when filling. 45 seconds to 1 min is normal at my elevation.

It's a very stupid and dangerous idea to suggest people do, cause if you hadn't noticed, some people will do stupid stuff that people tell them because they aren't that bright. (Tide pod and cinnamon challenges for a couple quick examples). I'm with Joe on this though, if it doesn't have a purge valve, and isn't meant to be refilled, then I'm not being stupid and doing it anyway. Buddy of mine refills the non-refillables. He's been doing it for at least 30 years for his own personal use. He orders replacement valves for the grill tank from ebay, removes the float, installs the valves in the grill tank, and this way the internal shut-off valve is disabled and his tank is modified for liquid use. Anyway, he only refills the little cylinders which have the safety valves and stores his bottles under a lean-to with open air ventilation. He removes the cylinder once during refill and using a needle nose pliers, pushes down the center of the threaded portion to trip the internal valve and bleed off pressure before hurrying up and doing one more refill attempt. He finds this fills his bottles up just about right.

Glad you made the point of REFILLABLE cylinders. I have seen so many videos of people refilling cylinders that are not meant to be refilled. It is also against the law to transport refilled cylinders (that are not meant to be refilled). I always say just because you can does not mean you should.
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC 3 месяца назад
It's a pretty important point. The disposable containers (especially the ones made recently) are _much_ thinner, and they don't have any coating inside to prevent rust. What I think is the worse risk is that the valves in the disposable cylinders really don't last longer than one or two charges before they start leaking. That would make it more hazardous to store them without a torchhead or something installed, which I think is contrary to what most people might think is the safest way to store them.
@liv04soccer
@liv04soccer 3 месяца назад
@@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC I'm not an expert by any means but I'm pretty sure as long as there is a tiny amount of propane in the bottle it displaces the oxygen and to rust I think you need oxygen for that reaction.

@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC 3 месяца назад
@@liv04soccer For the most part, but there are plenty of contaminants (including moisture) in LP. We wouldn't need scale traps in black iron gas lines if there weren't enough for the lines to produce scale. Every tank I've cut open has been rusted inside to some degree or another.
@liv04soccer
@liv04soccer 3 месяца назад
@@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC I just asked a propane pumper of 40 years of experience and he told me that old valves used to be a problem years ago not sealing when disconnected. Propane is heavier then air so any air entering the tank gets pushed out while filling most likely any water that makes it into the tank will stay but with out oxygen I don't see how it rusts. The odor additives are oily so I would believe that would also help the tank from not rusting. I have 20lb tanks from 1972 that passed hydro testing so rust has to be to a very minimal inside the tank for it to last this long. If your experiencing heavy rust inside your tanks there must be bad valves or improper filling procedure. Or both or some other unforseen factor.

I have been doing this for years with one-time use bottles. Same procedure but lacking the purge valve. It helps speed up the gas transfer if you put the empty tank in a cold location,(freezer or such) and the 20 Lb tank in a warmer location. The temperature difference causes the gas to flow faster. I use a small kitchen scale to determine the amount of gas transferred. Here in Canada a 20 lb tank is about 14.00$ to recharge and a 1 lb cylinder is 12.00$ at the local hardware! Do the math!

(2) Many suggest to freeze the receiving can (although they do say to weigh the can). But damn, why run the risk (lives, house fire, car fire) for not using refillable types. Digital weights can be wrong, mistake when reading can happen, etc. THANK YOU THANK YOU. DO NOT FREEZE it people. Just put in the cool section of the fridge for 30min. Freezing it is too RISKY because the donner gas will fill up too fast and GAS (Cool canister) escaping the allen-key valve is easier to see than LIQUID (Frozen canister) oozing out the tiny valve.

I have one. I found it necessary to completely empty the store bought ones. I leave a camp stove run till a bottle is empty. It also helps if the big tank is room temp or more, and the tiny bottles are cold. This will fill the bottles up better. In my neck of the woods, it is not legal to transport refilled "disposable" bottles; but you can with the ones certified for refilling. Rather hard to prove a bottle was refilled though. If you have a tank that has sat for years unused and not full, I recommend not using it to fill the small bottles. This plugged up my fill adapter. FYI

Good vid. Thanks. One missing step -- you could weigh the cylinder before and after.

Y'know, I've done that. The regular bottles weigh about 410 gm. empty. That's a good way to tell how full they are. Just subtract the empty weight.

@@markjames495 There may some difference in the tare weight between mfgs. The non-reusable for transport bottles I have weighed tared at 1.00 lb w/o cap and was consistent.

The cheaper $5 bottles are one and done. She is using special reusable bottles. You technically could refill the $5 bottles with that device but it is dangerous to do. They just aren't designed to be refilled. Spend the extra $15 or so and get the ones designed for it. You will still save tons of money in the long run and have the peace of mind that you aren't going to kill yourself... well, probably won't kill yourself...lol.

Not all of them are refillable. These have the refillable neck with blender screw.
