It's not that the idea is terrible, just the execution. Five nights at treasure island is a good game, despite being edgy. And the creepypasta that game is based on is one of the best creepypastas out there.
A horror game based on a kids property can be good without being edgy, around the clock in bikini bottom does this with spongebob and from what I’ve seen it’s amazing.
even if it's not your cup of tea there's also a 2025 project planned called "mouse" in which it's in style of a classic fps or just in style of an actual good fps game (although I believe not exactly like steamboat willie I think the style is good for the game and plus the classic style fps genre had started booming in 2023 and may continue the trend through 2024 and 2025) @@zeepsterd
Honestly, it would be more refreshing and unique at this point to make something based on these public domain properties that stays true to the original work. These horror movies feel like a punchline I've heard a dozen times.
I had an idea in mind for one. Perhaps it’d be a mix of Batim, who framed Roger rabbit and epic Mickey where the protagonist is oswald trying to clear Mickey/ his relatives name while he’s been framed for many murders of countless people
Yeah, that got old after the first time this happened two years ago with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. I could certainly do more creative non-horrific things with the earliest versions of Winnie the Pooh characters and Steamboat Willie characters if I tried. Speaking of that, did you see Ryan Reynolds's MintMobile commercial based on Winnie the Pooh, Winnie-the-Screwed? That was funny.
I'd love to see some kind of tribute that's just like.. brand new Mickey Mouse shorts in that old B&W style. I mean with the copyright on the first 3 Mickey shorts expired, I think it would be possible. But nooooooooooo, instead all we get is some lame horror movies. Come on, you can do nearly anything with this beloved character and you choose that. Disappointing.
@@skelebonez1349you know that is trademarked by square enix and Disney. Did something like that Disney will definitely sue. Nobody can use the club house or minnie boutique. Dc has trademarked Gotham city,Super man symbol, the comic book title,Batman symbol,Batsignal,Batarang and the Batmobile.
It's kinda funny that people critique Disney for being a soulless corporation by making themselves subversive "art" completely devoid of any soul and value. *The circle of live*
I think it would be fine if the budget wasn't so high, and didn't show in theaters, but still, I do think its different and the horror films arent as bad as disney and alll their critique
If disney didn't extend the copyright laws back in the 90's and Mickey became public domain back then, we probably wouldn't be getting this horror stuff because people would not have cared as much.
There’s a game coming out that reminds me of that. It’s called Mouse, and it’s an upcoming FPS where you play as a mouse detective(no, not THAT mouse detective) in a 1930s cartoon setting.
Turning beloved Winnie the Pooh into a Horror Franchise is just wrong but if people want to do that well it's in the Public Domain I may not be a fan of it.
The funny thing about the horror movie is that you can tell the creators never really watched Steamboat Willie (hell, that could probably said for a lot of people before 2024). That one cartoon has Mickey abusing a bunch of animals for fun, even kicking a baby pig at one point, and yet NOBODY is using any of that for their low-tier horror projects. It's almost ironic at a certain angle. Also, just a heads up for those wanting to use Mickey, other cartoons and promos made 1928 are also fair game, so the silent version of Plane Crazy and some color posters made for both cartoons are public domain as well. This means you CAN have a Mickey with red pants (or even striped pants), but the gloves have to yellow and the shoes have to be brown!
There is a horror short film on youtube called "the disappearance of S.S Wille" that remixes Steamboat Willie into some sort of horror mystery and it's really good
Let's admit , that Mickey Mouse is just a character , that raised generations of children with fun and happiness. Let's thank him with doing creative stuff with Mickey Mouse and his friends , after they become public domain too.
This could be looked at as social commentary about Disney's hatred of the public domain & their abuse of live action remakes. Steamboat Willie is mostly just Mickey being a complete asshole to other animals, so the "plot" hilariously enough won't be too far off.
The only thing scary about Mickey Mouse is his strong copyright claims and Disney's constant need to make live action movies of their animated cartoons! ☠️
I think the major issue is that they are trying to force Mickey Mouse into a horror setting. Instead of making a "mickey mouse horror movie", they are making "mickey mouse in a horror movie" in a setting that you could slap any other generic slasher of the week onto and it'd work just the same. How about some horror that actually plays with the concept of an old 1920s cartoon world?
The movie is probably trying to be campy on purpose. It doesn't have any intentions of being a legitimate horror film so complaining about it doesn't make any sense.
So a teacher shows "Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey" to students, the students are clearly traumatized but the teacher keeps showing and DOESN'T get fired, but another teacher simply shows her students Disney's "Strange World" and she INSTANTLY gets blacklisted cause it features a gay couple. Nothing explicit or anything like that. Just a gay couple. Yeah make any of that make sense.
*Showing blood, gore, murder and a topless woman* “Eh” *show a gay character talking to their crush* “UNACCEPTABLE! CALL THE POLICE! GET THIS MAN ARRESTED!!!”
@@supermariof0521 Strange World is considered like one of the worst Disney movies ever but for me Cruella is actually the worst Disney live action and movie. Seriously a movie based on a villain which loves fashion, and for no reasons she's planned to murder puppies in the sequel in a censored scene of corse. I don't call that a movie but an insane sh*t. That's dump. How to normalize animal cruelty with Disney ? I'm talking about the sequel not the first one
I wanted to do Roger Rabbit style movie where Mickey tries to become famous again. It would be sweet, and fun, and funny. and for all ages, and I'm sure it would flop hard.
You will have Critics but I do think u should do it. And I love Roger Rabbit it is one of my favorite Live Action Meets 2D Cartoon movies we need more of this.
"What if innocent thing did edgy thing" has been base level Z grade horror and comedy since, like, I don't know, the drawn together movie? Perhaps earlier than that? It's why I didn't care much about that indie game about a sheep making a cult, it's expecting people to think base level shock is still interesting somehow.
It’s also not original since the original works depending on what they are have or have been through in depth themes often based around things excused and demonized by the general public.
@@avelynn5976it’s called cult of the lamb and yea it’s basically just "look at these cute characters do horrific things! I bet you feel really shocked now!!!" Also they added shrex to the game because I guess that’s shocking to some people? Anyway you can find playthroughs on RU-vid, or just play it yourself it’s in steam and consoles.
Bro even if this movie sucks. I just love that the SECOND, Mickey Mouse becomes Public Domain he gets a horror movie. Also I feel like making a Suicide Mouse game would be really creative.
2D platformer where you play as Mickey and you have to kill yourself lol No but for real, it'd probably just be an .EXE-like, where you just walk forward for a bit and then creepy stuff happens.
Imagine if a horror short film was the animation and its haunted by the Disney artist who made it, they made it as a sort of coping mechanism since a lot of terrible stuff happened to him, and besides the loop the only thing in the animation is the artist doing some voice over dumping all him dark thoughts, and then a gun shot is and soon after that paranormal shit starts happening.
@@t-bird6853 I'm sorry to you and Godzilla, basically a Disney artist vented all his dark thoughts in the audio of a simple Micky mouse animation he made, making it his suicide note in a way, killed himself on recording, and now the tapes or film that's the animation was on is now haughted by the guy and when you watch things get spooky and fucked up, basic as hell creepypasta stuff.
This is to be expected whenever something kid-friendly enters the public domain, allowing anyone to create anything with it. This includes horror content.
I knew this was inevitable. But the fact that we got not one, but two horror projects less than a day after steamboat Willy beame public domain is insane. Seriously, why can't we just get some other genres at least?
@@Aigle662frileux Yah, but you know how kids are about mascot horror. Especially when it's taking characters from popular media and having them be evil/suicidal with little to no reason behind it.
Zeepsterd what would you do if some asshole advertised a scary movie, but it turned out to be a satirical comedy specifically on Mickey losing his copyright?
I think a good story would be to be self aware and have it that the characters became public domain. They have been unshackled and are free. Then they slowly mutate and clone themselves in a way as they a warped by the masses and the lack of restrictions. This may cause them to be killers but some version fight the killers. It is that the character has been split up as traits are added to one then more are added to the variant and so on. Imagine something that’s story is something like y2k would happen but it’s public domain characters running rampant due to mutations caused by ideas people have of what the character can be made into.
That’s similar to the classic plot of deeper works based on characters of childhood. Japan has a lot of good examples of it and it’s the iconic characters they have not the trending media. If you Mickey is go up against the masses, then it’s not about thousands of people considering themselves “underdogs” because they happen to not be a CEO. Plus this type of problem in this context always seems to go back the US, an issue out of everything is made. Anyhow he sentiments of the story can be universal and it would probably be more insane if it’s a Disney licensed work, after all they’ve done alike things before. Classic Superhero tales and monster tales and so on, the ones with thought out into them, they aren’t just “corporation this or that” and they aren’t about not challenging generally held beliefs either.
I seriously just want to see a 2D Platformer of SteamBoat Willie since Mickey Mouse is in the Public Domain that is all I ask for as long as the Platformer isn't crappy.
@@zeepsterd There is a mickey mouse game for the sega genesis and SNES where mickey goes through his old cartoons and steamboat willie is the first level.
why yes, something that gives us a world beyond the steamboat and river. and if i were to put any "horror" content, it would just be bare trees, eyes in the shadows, a black cat. y'know general Halloween stuff for 4-year-olds, no ripping people apart. cuz it's still a family-friendly character.
I came up with this idea of making a "Steamboat Willie Simulator" game. Maybe I'll do that in the future. We have to remember that the good stuff comes with time. Once the initial shock is gone, cool new projects will be made and released. For example, The Caribbean Sail released their new character (You know who I'm talking about.) in the first day of 2024. Go and make cool stuff like, idk, one of those reanimated projects. Just go! Just GO! JUST GO! Expect that this cheap trick of "ruining your childhood" becomes less effective the more times it's pulled off. If you want a good horror Mickey Mouse movie, then make it! AND MAKE IT GOOD! JUST DO IT!
I've noticed any character that hit public domain gets their own horror movie (I'm easily scared of things so I don't like horror movies) but I saw this coming last year when I started making a joke about mickey turning into a blood thirsty demon mouse after I saw the commercial for winnie the pooh horror movie from last year XD so I'm guess tigger and peter pan will be joining the horror movie treatment to soon and I heard next year popeye will be public domain,so can't wait for popeye the killerman next year XD
Tbh, I'm not too upset about this because it's an immediate reaction. People love doing dark ansty stuff with fluffy innocent stuff and vice-versa. But once the "funny" juxtaposition of that wears off, there won't be an incentenive for anyone to use the characters like that...except the people that genuinely like them.
We litrealy wont even get horror media like childs play or fnaf if we were getting as offended over making cute things scary like we are now- the issue isnt the mere idea of taking child friendly things n making them scary its just people doing it horribly I mean hell “the mean one” was recently made & it looks like a pretty fun horror comedy film-it even has tons of references to dr seuss’ other work its ironically one giant love letter
@@Man-wolf- I didn't mean to imply that this juxtaposition can never work. It's just that films like Blood and Honey rely on that alone without doing anything interesting, which is what I was critiqing. Either way it's better to not fall for the bait with these shock value cash in movies and talk about the good examples instead.
Have you played Oblitus Casa? It's a FNAF fan game in which one of the antagonists you have to deal with is the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey (named Willie). The game was released in 2020, 4 years before the short reached public domain.
I think Jon Solo said it best. Disney took gruesome and messed up public domain characters and stories and made them something wholesome and family-friendly, and now the public domain is taking wholesome and family-friendly Disney characters and stories and making them gruesome and messed up.
Honesty my idea for a Mickey mouse story (for at least steamboat willie) would be to put him in a tintin like story with (i believe to be) pete and minnie, as they go crazy indiana jones like stories on their steamboat with wacky cartoon antics. And maybe do a version of pete that isn't necessarily an antagonist, but a very grumpy boss/roommate that happens to be Mickey's friend. Maybe toss in Oswald and Felix The Cat
Is it weird to say I'm actually excited for the idea of Mickey in a horror setting in both movies and games? Unlike the other public domain stuff like Winnie The Pooh, Mickey just fits in perfectly in this setting and also *(A H E M)* BENDY! BENDY! BENDY!
Bendy was based on Mickey but he works better because he's his own character and the concept of a cartoon coming to kill his creator is sick, these projects will be forgotten.
That mickey mouse creepypasta "Suicide Mouse" was written around 2004-2007 and the original video (The blurry looking one) was possibly made around 2003 and surfaced around forum sites.
I like to think of myself as a big Mickey fan and I've been paying a lot of attention to the news coming out of Mickey becoming public domain. Props to this video for actually teaching me some new stuff I didn't know like the su*cide comics, the 40th anniversary special, and Milton Mouse.
Making a public domain character into cheap horror movie's/game's is so lazy and such an obvious cash grab, and this from independent creators acting like untalented Hollywood hacks that they originally criticised
The inherent horror of advertising directly to children getting simplified to “spooky mascots” while corporations give millions to slop that could change the lives of indie artists is exhausting.
One thing I'd like to point out, it isn't *just* steamboat willie. The slient versions of plane crazy and the gallopin' gaucho are also in the public domain.
If you wanna make a Steamboat Willie horror movie, I think something like Jaws would be the best way to do it. Make Mickey the PROTAGONIST instead of the killer. It would at least be different than all the other horror movies based on childhood characters that have been coming out.
@gechoman44iwantahippo no make Mickey the KILLER, ANTAGONIST and villain instead of the protagonist if people are going to make Steamboat Willie horror movie
@noahalcantar2431 That’s not original though. We already have two movies being mads that are doing that, and we’ve been getting a lot of horror movies where a childhood icon becomes the killer lately.
@@gechoman44iwantahippoguess what this is how real life works nowadays. Mickey Mouse nowadays should always be the MURDER/Antagonist/Killer instead of thE PROTAGONIST in order to traumatize children to thinking that Mickey Mouse is evil
you're just gonna have to accept that people will always do things that displease you, chief. I'm just glad they have the freedom to do so and disney can't censor them anymore 🙂
@@bensonjarvis5025I know that I'm sounding like an edgelord teen in my gothic phase but people turning every small simple and happy things into a destructive mess filled with pain and misery is how real life works nowadays and you can't stop it
Theres a really good game of it called “five nights at treasure island” thats obv inspired by fnaf lol its not exctaly like the creepypasta but its pretty fun
Exactly. Creepypasta was fun when it was an edgy niche. Then people decided to profit off it, which was cool the first few times. But then people decided to run it into the ground until nobody wants anything to do with it anymore.
You know what would make for a pretty cool Mickey Mouse horror movie? Is if they made the movie fully animated using some sort of classic 2d animation and if it was in a style similar to the Epic Mickey video games. Now I don't guess phantom blot is in the public domain yet, but they could still come up with some other monster that runs around tormenting and killing citizens and then have Mickey bravely go after the monster. Have Mickey be the hero and slay the beast instead of being a common slasher. Now that's the way to make a Mickey Mouse horror. Man I wished I knew how to make movies because I totally would make this if I could.
Pretty recently, what I think will be the best steamboat willie horror thing every came out, The Vanishing Of S.S Willie, an amazing indie shirt that just kinda shows how horrifying the actual short would be if it happened in real life.
The only real good Horror themed Mickey Mouse stuff are The Mad Doctor and Runaway Brain. And if you’re looking for games, Epic Mickey has you covered when it comes to a darker Mickey Mouse universe. Oh? You want one that’s more indie than anything. Well, Five Nights at Treasure Island and Oblitus Casa. Try them. They’re actually scary instead of whatever Mousetrap is.
Disney has ben suckling off the teet of the public domain since Snow White, dishing out lawsuits to scare other animation companies from drinking from the same fountain. They churn out soulless live action remake after soulless ive action remake. This game or movie or whatever is like poetic commentary on Disney itself. They deserve this.
The horror genre was ruined by Five Nights at Freddy’s. Now it’s all just childhood nostalgia twisted into pure terror. Not that FNaF is a bad series, people just mooched off of its success.
@@noahalcantar2431 I mean, before FNaF, we had a good chunk of really good horror games. But when FNaF dropped, everyone just mooched off of nostalgic horror’s popularity. Especially with stuff like Garten of Banban and Poppy Playtime. And then there’s the every once in a while unique horror game that isn’t nostalgic horror, but it only gets a couple players. I’m not saying FNaF = bad, I’m just pissed that so many people got greedy.
the most horrible thing isn't mickey itself. It's when you recall your childhood cartoon characters, nearly all of them are belong to Disney this huge corporation. Unconsciously, our childhood were captured by this financial group--a group who is quite goooooood at sue.
There is this game that has existed for a while that is essentially the oregon trail but its a boat at sea and it features mickey it actually looks kinda cool.
I think something that might be cool is if in the near future we see a bunch of now public domain old cartoon characters in some kinda crossover event have characters like Felix the cat, Micky Mouse, and Bugs Bunny all interacting with eachother would be quite entertaining.
I wouldn’t mind people making horror movies of public domain characters but at least put some creativity to it instead of just making it full of jumpscares, sexual activity and useless gore. They only do this to get a quick buck. I wonder what people will do once Popeye becomes public domain..
Its so interesting how characters like Mickey Mouse have been around for so long, yet nobody has really explored the material to its fullest potential. Mickey and Winnie the Pooh both being public domain now means anything goes, only people associate the words "Public Domain" with really bad horror fanfictions of childhood cartoon characters.
I hope bob "wait out the strikes until the workers start losing their houses" iger sees trailers for "steamboat willie: blood in the water" and starts crying so hard he shits himself
Did you know:You can use the color version of him(not the modern one) but the one on the steamboat willie poster,Mickey is in color,so you can use his steamboat willie in color.
Oh, don’t understand why it’s because of Steeple Willy entered public domain. I don’t know why it has to be like this when you stop this movie from coming.
Dude, you really don't understand why they're doing this stuff? Cause it's really simple. GREED. They see the trends, and they see that people these days LOVE horror. In the end, it's all about that cha-ching, bling-bling. Disgusting.
Turning childhood icons that have gone public domain in to horror films and games is getting old. to me its the lazy route. Winnie the pooh could easily be made into a American McGee Alice type game, movie, tv show but that takes effort and creativity. Steam boat willie could work as a dark/R rated comedy but same thing. This horror version of childhood characters is already getting fatigue.
