What if sports are hindering our potential for success? What if we offered education instead? Dr. Brandon Gamble’s research finds startling evidence of the negative impact professional sports has in the black community, especially among black youth.
Dr. Brandon Gamble served middle and high school students as a school psychologist in the Long Beach Unified School District before becoming an associate professor at Cal State University Long Beach, in the College of Education for the Educational Psychology program and has had the honor to serve as the advisor for the Black Student Union at CSULB. Dr. Gamble's written work and research has focused on African American male's social capital and familial support networks that empower young men to succeed in academics. He is currently the liaison of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) to CASP, and as of Spring 2016, has been elected as the Western Regional representative of the ABPsi.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I like it! We're only valuable if we're on a field or court. And even then, we can't kneel or practice free speech. We're so very powerful and beautiful and valuable in so many other realms!

I won't even get into how sports medicine has healthcare for the average person. Tommy John surgery, nutrition, weight training etcetera all owe their increased presences to sports. The increased quality of life can directly be attributed to sports

I get it as a whole persons watch too much sports and filmed entertainment or burn time in cyber space. I used to watch everything accept soccer I always had zero interest in soccer. I cut my viewing dramatically, no NFL, no NBA, few Movies & TV. What’s left standing that I do watch is Yankees baseball and Law and Order and here n there Seinfeld. I don’t miss NFL or NBA. I do love Baseball its a 162 regular season games + post season but maybe one day I will cut that as well too. Time waits for no man we should spend it wisely.

No offense, but life would be pretty boring without the lessons we can learn from sports, even if we're just fans.

Unfortunately it's the same thing with the music industry. I'm currently taking a business of songwriting class and my teacher did say "I think your parents must be right." Too many young people often don't know the harsh reality that goes into these professions and the illusions that you see on stage, on the court, , and many of these harsh realities scares me to death and would make anyone feel discouraged. Women getting abused by males, women not receiving equal pay in the sport they play, the pressure of youth athletes and musicians to succeed, injuries at younger ages, artists getting sued by other frivolous artists who want all the money, very little pay of the athletes and artists, racism, oversensitivity, scandals, etc. There are reasons why I sometimes hate the sporting and music industry to the point where I often complain about it and discourage, and I HATE discouraging others, and nobody should have to do that, but unfortunately it has become the truth. It kind of hurts because I am a musician myself. What really pisses me off is how this is even happening in America. It is wrong to say "stop watching sports" or "stop pursuing your dreams" or "stop watching concerts", but it is also wrong to not look deeply enough into the realities that are being faced in these industries. There are too many great benefits in both these industries, but unfortunately, we are just not allowed to make it happen. We should not over-glorify our dreams, but at the same time, we need to change how these industries and our society function and to give people the respect they deserve for the hard work they poured out, and the best way to do is by learning about the business first.

Myron Rolle and Robert Smith. Both former NFL players. One is a neurosurgeon and the other is in medicine. I really detest people who shade sports as a worthless. Sports teaches a great deal to a lot of young people, particularly at risk youth who otherwise would not amount to much. A balanced person is what when you have a academically sound person participation in athletics

It does teach lessons of the importance like teamwork, in children who are adolescence and are developing people skills. But when that addiction carry's over to adulthood and distracts your mind and spirit, which is what this man was presenting, then that is a problem.
@mrdoormat6809
@mrdoormat6809 3 года назад
Games, movies, and plays also give similiar benefit to the youth, but without buldozing hundreds of people's houses, eating millions of taxpayer's money for barely used buildings, and makes hundreds of people shade blood for teams that doesn't even care for them.

What you are saying is partly correct, but sports in our neighborhoods is sold as the only way to prosperity instead as a tool to create access to institutions of higher learnings. Also, in most cases our athletes are not college ready students which explains why the standards for acceptance into colleges was modified. With that said a more balanced approach is probably needed where education and athletics have equal weigh in the lives of the youth.

I slightly disagree. I think we overemphasize education. When you know you're worth millions chase the money. Although, I get the message Excel in academics, but secure your future.

Some of this isn't right though... Non-athletes graduate at a higher rate across the board, but what about among black men? Think about how many black men got the opportunity to go to college in the first place thanks to sports? The anti-basketball reasoning was a bit spotty as well...
