If you're a bit older and starting BJJ. More than likely you have more than a couple of your BJJ training partners who are younger and faster than you are.
But don't despair. One of the beauties of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is that it can be adapted to so many body types and ages. So you can be a young guy who uses speed and cardio, or if you're an older guy you can use other options.
In this video I share a question I received from our Buddy Jon who is 47 and having a speed issue in his BJJ. As an older guy doing Brazilian Jiujitsu is just isn't as fast as some of his training partners. And he is wondering what he can do to fight back.
During the video I share a few different tips.
1. To keep pressure and eliminate space if the partner is faster. To create space is to allow movement and speed. To remove space is to contain that speed and movement. If you're the older / slower person in your BJJ gym. You need to keep pressure and/or eliminate space.
2. Grips, grips, grips. I always stress the importance of grips. It's something so many BJJ practitioners don't pay attention to enough. It's why I created a Grip Fighting series on my website. But it's even more important for you if you are facing a faster person in BJJ. If you dominate the grips, it will be difficult for them to take advantage of their speed and movement.
3. I touch on this briefly. But if there is someone in your BJJ gym who makes you uncomfortable because of the way their game is. If their game forces you to play out of your comfort zone. Then you should roll with them even more. Because those types of people will make you grow in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Training with them more will cause your BJJ game to change and adapt.
So if you're an older / slower guy in Brazilian Jiujitsu. And you're having trouble with Faster Bjj training partners.
Then I hope these tips help you!
