STOPPED getting quality dolls? Is there Support for future doll lines & Coachella is WILD! Ep.17 

Everything is more expensive these days and people don't have extra money to buys as many dolls as they use to.

a lot of people are into BJD dolls now. Also the nostalgia of buying childhood and vintage dolls could be a factor.

I dont like toddler, chartoonish, anime type dolls. I like Barbie, RH, MH, Bratz. I loved RH ! Even if they have big heads, their fashion was mature. And their faces were so pretty. Some of these newer doll lines just cant match Barbie & the past RH. They are lacking the mix & match of clothing & shoes, maybe ? Or no playsets with them. Just my own opinions of why they dont sell as well...maybe ? Im so happy I started collecting when RH was good, as I just fell inlove ! What a great line of dolls ! It will be hard for another doll line to match them. I sadly think we got the best already, & that top quality & unique out of the box designs are done. I mean...Shadow High ? Uggghhhh, so good ! I miss them already 😫....but thanks for letting me ramble on 🤣

Lately my focus has been Steffi Love, Licca Chan/Jenny and Defa Lucy. The quality on the first 2 is always there and Defa can be hit or miss but generally is better than many of the play line dolls Mattel is putting out. That said, there are bright spots like the new Barbie Looks collection. I don't know what Rainbow High and LOL Surprise and tweens are doing, seems to be not too much and as you mentioned, their shelf space is dwindling.

Yes ! We got tired of our living room recently & painted the walls & rearranged the furniture & moved the wall art. Its like we moved to a different house & I love it.

I enjoy this format! Doll talk with friends! As for me not buying dolls so much, its a lack of space, the quality has declined, cost of living has gone up. I prefer to get a quality doll instead of several low quality dolls and some dolls are not found in my area.

And the Mini Brands & Miniverse do so well, because most are Barbie size ! Most can work in a dollhouse. And so realistic. So, like past surprise toys...they didnt go with anything. What do you do with them ? And they were cheap.

Yo gabba gabba about 10/11 years old I think my 13yr old back in the day loved it what a show this was this year !!!

I'm one of those people who leans more into collector dolls and foreign dolls when the playline stuff isn't doing it for me. I hope the smaller brands can hang in there though and keep delivering unique ideas that the main two companies aren't offering, like pixie dolls and mini brands. It seems like Chinese blindbox bjds have been gaining popularity over the past couple years for people who like small dolls, and now folks who like Barbies are buying Defa Lucy.

I actually am not too much into mini food blind bag stuff. I would rather have a Subway themed doll can a Subway sandwich. I think we are headed towards the drought. I've been noticing a majority of people ordering overseas because there's more variety

I stopped collecting RBH after the reboot and jumped into collecting MH G3. This then led me to jump into MH G1 and have been hooked. I’m definitely seeing a ton of new collectors for MH G1 in the fandom and I’m guessing it’s because the quality of playline dolls is going down across the board

I used to sell art dolls in Germany until we left six years ago. I always wanted to properly my own fashion doll collector line though. Just the last few days we went over the numbers. And even with having a prototype in Resin, it’s not possible for us to do atm. Manufacturing is too expensive and there’s still no alternative to injection molding for plastics, wich needs very expensive starting costs. Vinyl can be done on a smaller scale but drives up cost per doll. So resin bjd’s in small quantities is what we can do. But I just don’t think there’s interest in already styled fashion dolls for the bjd space. I understand that bigger companies have much more money to invest but the market is risky for them as well. And for us it was shocking that in 2017, when we last calculated the numbers and financial investments to bring out a doll line, it was almost half of the costs of today and that must also effect bigger companies. It’s scary. I know quite a few artists in a similar position to me, that have ideas for doll lines but not the funds to get out of one of a kind sculpted bjds and the ones that go bigger already struggle to cast in resin, wich has much smaller starting costs. Then there’s advertising and basically only online selling as an option. I can’t sew for the life of me and the doll seamstress was very expensive to make the outfit for my prototype into a pattern and sew that outfit ten times for me. It was very expensive. I’d have to charge 120$ minimum per outfit because of that. I have seen many collectors recently who buy more very expensive full set dolls but buy fewer dolls. We will probably not see the quality of clothes etc., that RH/SH had until recently for that price point again. I have no clue how they even did that. I have been having more fun recently with Barbie basics, customizing them and buying nice clothes for them. And I started to buy nice furniture for 1/6 scale,to take photos and that’s a lot of fun for me.

I can totally see people gravitating towards Integrity dolls especially now that we aren't getting the edgy fashion from Rainbow High. I can definitely see myself going to them too if I hadn't gravitated towards adult collectors versions of Licca and Jenny friends dolls already. I'm spending a pretty penny getting those and the fashions lean more Lolita/Kawaii so I still lack the edgy fashion that I crave

I think it's a combination of the economy right now. And the lack of quality in dolls as dor me right now I decided I want to grab OMG fierce dolls. They have good quality and they're fairly sturdy. I just don't need the entire line of them considering OMG's don't have knee joints.

The only dolls that I thought I could be interested in were the Mermaze Mermaidz cause I love 🧜🏻‍♀️ but for some strange reason I didn’t connect with them…. Not even in discount or full clearance price. Now I’m only into Barbie and MH, and trying to collect the RH and SH that I don’t have yet, cause I don’t like the new rebrand 🤷🏻‍♂️. I think a new “Doll Drought” is coming or maybe dolls that are not that exciting 😅.

I’ve been saving my money and buying collector dolls. I also buy a ton of custom MH dolls which tend to be very pricy. I miss walking down the doll isle and seeing new dolls tho, but it is what it is

I remember going down the aisle and seeing old dolls and new dolls. so I don't know why they don't have "room" now. its crazy.

I only have 1 Mermaze too ! I have an odd doll or two of a couple lines that i dont technically "collect".

I love collecting dolls, but I simply refuse to buy the same character doll just because she is in a different outfit. To me that is putting me in a spot to get a different outfit I have to buy the same doll. I buy fashion dolls to style and change clothes and the problem nowadays is that doll companies don't give their dolls a fashion line of on-trend clothing. I know that most play line dolls are created for kids, but a large percentage are bought my collectors. I wish that they would make new characters but with a large variety of clothes to separately purchase. Companies could make like a line for children and a better line for the adult collector. I see a problem with the quality of hair and printing on many company dolls, but Mattel has been really lacking in the last few years. I know oversees the manufacturing standards aren't great but the companies buying from them should demand quality because without it the sales plummet. To me dolls are mini artwork that you dress and change the style to suit the collector. Take care.

Right on, I haven’t been bought fashionistas nor fashion packs in the last year, only movie and looks dolls because I’m tired of the quality and staleness. Instead I put that money towards higher quality fashions from Etsy and other third parties.

Noticed at work pretty much the only RH dolls on the shelf are the newer ones.
