Was just turned off by BJJ because of a mat bully. Once, I hurt my arm and told him politely (before I rolled) to not Armbar this arm and if he does, dont lock it in, I will tap without an issue. He kept going after my arm, armbar after armbar and he lock it in everytime. I was pissed and didnt roll with him after. Resently, everyone was joking around and I made a joke about him... again, everyone was throwing shots and he got in my face and told me to not call him out infront of the class again. The arrogance is ridiculous.... still thinking about going back idk.

I'm outside of the U.S., done some BJJ and a little Judo and many striking. I went to a local Judo school and did Newaza (rolling), guys were very rough, shoving their fists in my throat, some nice though. Got to a brown belt, strong, but I was way bigger still. Rolled for mins, I tapped repeatedly but he choked me unconscious, didn't apologize or anything. Told instructor, he said it happens sometimes. Never went back.

In my gym, some of the MMA guys hold submission attempts after the buzzer sounds. Normally, everyone stops what they are doing, but two different guys tapped me doing that before. They were waiting for our instructor to say, "Tiiiiiime." It sucks to relax and have a training partner tap you after the buzzer sounds. It's one of the tiny clashes of BJJ and MMA cultures in my gym, but I learned quickly though.

Trust is very important. Until I've rolled with someone enough to establish it I tend to be a bit timid and cautious with them. I'm not ashamed of that, I'm an old man who doesn't like to spend my precious time talking to doctors...I'd rather retain my ability for constructive training. I don't think I've been maliciously bullied yet, but sometimes guys are a bit inattentive or could use a bit more awareness of how to roll with a noob. Only with other white belts so far, all the blue and above have been good about this.

love the message of this video, my kids had to change school after about 2.5-3 years of going to a school like this. Now my kids love their current school and no longer a "drag" to take them to classes. My three kids have been in bjj for nearly 5 years now.

In every walk of life there is 'that guy'. In the office, at the ice rink, at BJJ. They are damaged people. They have not yet transitioned from children to being a competent adult. We have a guy at the ice rink. We play pick-up, no contact, minimal equipment hockey recreationally. He is antisocial, has an inappropriately competitive mindset, will check physically weaker guys (or new guys). No one likes him. Those guys really are pitiable.

Sometimes I don’t know if I’m the bully or being bullied at my gym. I’m trying to get the balance right regarding my training and balancing effort with results.

I just started training jiu jitsu over the past 3/4 months. I had one of these people as a partner one training session. he was a three or four stripe white belt and it was my second or third class. Im 38 and I’m sure he’s 24/25 years old. I felt like I didn’t learn squat that day, but at the end of the class I finally got the upper hand. Sometimes you have to endure and problem solve but you have to watch for patterns and behaviors of the person.

I almost got into a fight with a mat bully the other month. I don't think the instructors are truly monitoring this other guy. He's known as a mat bully at my gym. Coming from a collegiate wrestling background, I am used to a certain style of aggressiveness but this idiot clearly has an ego. I have to avoid rolling with him because I don't want to get injured.

We've got a new, Napolean (small sized, but huge ego) mat bully who's got an ego the size of Rushmore. Not sure how he walks in the door each day. I treat him with respect, but avoid him as much as possible. Our school doesn't tolerate this behavior, so I'm hoping our instructors will notice his behavior. I may bring it up to them if nothing changes. Leave your ego and pride at the door!

If they ignore the tap or crank moves on that don't need to, intentionally roll with people that are lower skill level than they are. That's a mat bully.

No offense to wrestlers or the wrestling community but that is generally the mentality with bullies at a Jiu-Jitsu school. Wrestlers just want to win and they think that smashing the competition is the way to do it and they don't realize that they are stepping into a new and different world of grappling in an altogether new and different art! their behavior is rude and disrespectful and Jiu-Jitsu is the opposite of what they we're taught in their sport respectively! sometimes they recognize that they are being bullies and sometimes they are not aware until they get schooled or submitted! wrestlers coming to Jujitsu is always going to be a problem in the beginning until they are schooled. That is my observation

I do mostly wrestling at my jujitsu gym, and to be fair it is encouraged and taught at my gym, and I’ve been coming to this same conclusion and kinda feel bad about it. The mentality of a wrestler is good for comp, and winning, but wrestling culture is definitely about aggression, pushing and pulling, being greedy with the dominant positions even if that leaves the jujitsu person forced to use highly effective triangles and guillotines from guard which admittedly sounds frustrating. I’m light though so at least I’m not 200 pounds sitting on a lightweight, but I offer that you understand too that wrestling has its culture as well and that diversity in a gym only proves to enhance the effectiveness of jujitsu as a whole. I see so much of jujitsu people wanting to stick to their traditional ways which is fine of course but an open mind isn’t a bad thing to have when rolling. I had one older guy come in and he mopped the floor with me since he was a wrestler too and I remember being frustrated but then I talked to him and realized instantly he was a good person. As for rolling with higher belts as a wrestler I just find that the higher belts take wrestling more seriously and have the experience to deal with it and don’t find it as frustrating. In conclusion don’t be pissed that a wrestler is being aggressive it’s apart of their culture and you can learn from them aswell.

There is a difference between bully and enforcer. The bully does not engage with the other team members well being in mind. The enforcer, enforces good technique. After all if it is not tested with metal somewhat we learn real. Just like sex it the enforcement needs to be consensual. 😀😀
