Great podcast. I'm not sure how to rate this like you mentioned. If you explain what to do for that, I'll be happy to rate them. I shared this podcast with my parents. Their newest dog is a jumper and always tried to put its paw on me. They never understand why I am so quick to stand up and get the "tone" with the dog when it does this to me. Everyone seems to think it's cute, and the massive 100 lbs dog just wants to give "hugs" and "high fives."I explained that she is basically saying, "F u, I'm the boss." This also goes for when guests come to my house and my dog is on her place. I have had people go up to Ellie on her place, and she jumps up. I have yelled at people when they grab her paws and say, "Look how cute she is. She stands up." I don't allow this because I know that Ellie is constantly testing her dominance, and then I tell the people my dog can't put her paws on them if they back away from the "Place" that she knows she has to stay on. I really liked in this podcast that you articulated the importance of ALL humans being at the top of the pack and how everyone in your household needs to be consistent. I have always found training other people to be harder than training my dog. They let their emotions get in the way.

Ive been going thru your Bella Playlist. This particular video on nipping jumping and biting is where we are really struggling. Our 4 month old Chocolate lab has become very bitey. We also are struggling with the drop command during retrieves on bumpers and balls. To the point of a tug of war, a growl, and even a snarl with teeth showing. Once the object is removed using an ear pinch, he then wants to reach out and start biting at us, nipping, etc.
Okay so I have tried so many peoples tips. I have a mix breed 9 month old pup. He jumps he nips he is quicker than you are and you can’t touch him when he starts. He will run across the house and ram into the backs of your legs when your washing dishes. He gets up in your lap when your trying to eat. He’s not stupid. He knows the crate is bed and he will get in. Unless he’s excited. But a treat will get him in there. He knows when your going to pin him in the kitchen and won’t go near the door. His toys are forced on you no matter how many hours you play. He will not listen and if his face touches it he will shred it. What am I doing wrong? We have tried everything. Even a beeping collar. He just catches you laying it down and chews it up. Bites when you try putting it on him. So I give up. Any suggestions?
Qestion would it be okay or not to train a dog for multiple purposes ie duck hunting and blood tracking deer or would that be overwhelming to them? Thanks for the videos helps so much to actually understand why behavior wise they do certain things!
Absolutely you can, all our dogs do multiple different styles of hunting, and I believe many of the skill sets overlap. Duck dogs have to track cripples as well, its the same skill in a different scenario. Hope this helps!
I recently got a shep and border collie mix he's a great dog .wild as hell calming down a lot after neutering.but,recently he's doing this jump up and nipping crap.i grabbed his collar and pinned him to the ground and told him hell no..and he chilled out.and looked as u say embarrassed.and went back to his loving happy self..he's not a little dog.very tough boy.was stuck in a crap kennel in Arkansas for 5 months and was never let out of his cage..he's come along way..any advice on his nipping and jumping?and he door dashes in the house after our walks..that's gotta stop
I really enjoyed this. I have a 10 week old lab. And her teeth are sharp. And she is starting to bite ankles, wrists and clothes. Lol. If any other recommendations for this I would greatly appreciate it!!
I loved this podcast! We have a dachshund, that barks all the time, he chases after our kids while they're running in the yard and barks at them and has even nipped them. He also barks whenever anyone comes to the house, approaches the car, just yesterday he growled at my husband who went to pick him up off our bed to take him out to go potty. I know you can help me with this. Please help!
I 've tried all this. I have made her flip many of times. It's like she think it's a game. She is just over a year. I have tried taking her to ground and holding her till she gives up. Any tips?
Firm up. You need to firm up until you get a change. If the dog thinks it's a game, it's because you are making them think it's a game. Firm up, change the technique, and find what it takes to change the behavior. Not everything works exactly the same with every dog in every situation. If I try something and it doesn't work, I try something else until it does. I think you need to remain fluid when working with a dog as they are all different.
So first, I've screwed up. I have 2 Goldendoodles, Ruger is 1yr old, Grizz is almost 6mo old. I've allowed both pups to sit on my lap when I am in my recliner, sleep with me in bed, played tug with Ruger, but not Grizz. They both like to lay half on me, which will stop immediately. Ruger gets super excited when I get home from work and will "mouth' my fingers while I walk up the siedwalk to the house, but only the first few minutes after I get home, not just randomly. He's always been somewhat of a "half focused" type of pup, in other words, takes his sweet time responding to commands. Sorta at a loss as how to correct this. Grizz is much more focused as of now, but I'm afraid I'm doing it wrong and he will end up like Ruger. Is there any way I could talk/communicate with you besides this comment section? I have much more to tell you but can only say so much here.
In general, I think the answer is you need to establish boundaries and rules. That's step 1, step 2 is enforcing them consistently. That's how you will shape the dogs behavior. Keep in mind whatever it is that you are doing will become habit, so "training" the dog cannot just happen 10 to 15 minutes a day, or while during focused sessions. They are learning all the time, you need to be training all the time. Everything you've described sounds like easy fixes, provided you establish fair and clear rules for both dogs.
