Stopping Power: Which Brake Setup Is Right For You?

You can only go as fast as you can slow down, as the saying goes. In motocross, brakes are a dynamic system where you a battling the forces of traction, friction, heat, feel, power, and feedback, all at the same time. Unlike paved disciplines of racing, where maximum stopping power is usually the goal, motocross and supercross require a much more subtle and responsive brake system that allows the rider to have maximum control, rather than max braking power.
Since there are multiple parts to a brake system, there are multiple ways to upgrade or change a dirt bike's brakes. Lines, rotor shapes, rotor sizes, and brake pads can all be swapped for different parts in many combinations. We decided to reach out to Galfer USA to test some of their set ups for motocross bikes on the same day, at the same track to really get an apples-to-apples comparison. This test can apply to any brand of brakes and is about different set ups more than being about specific products.
Click play as we dive deep into the details and give a full run-down on the comparison.

Either there is something wrong with the microphone or Watto now works for Galfer.

This might be the move for me, currently have a broken wrist and only 7 more weeks until opening race day so I won't have much time to get back to 100%. I have awful arm pump issues even with a good diet, decent conditioning, and squeezing the bike. Im Hoping the upgraded rotor pads and brake line can help make braking easier on my wrist, and give me less arm pump all together. Thanks so much for the awesome video!

Super informative i wish you guys would have done it on a 2020-21 Yz250f or 450. They have weaker brakes would love to hear feedback from those parts on that bike

Honestly I wish I could have done this for every bike, they all have such a different brake feel. I chose KX450 because it was neutral and felt like it could translate well across the board. - But having rode the 2021 YZF's in the shootout's I know what you mean, my friend was also saying the same thing the other day. Typically OEM rubber hoses break down around 20 hrs (+/-) depending on how you brake and your environment, it could start to degrade faster. I would say to do quick check to be sure you're heading in the right direction, thoroughly flush your brake system with a good fluid. My favorite has always been Motul RBF600 because it has an extremely high boiling point. This will make sure there is no moisture in the system (over time moisture just forms in the system due to heat and well...science stuff). If still unhappy, think about this. Are you unhappy with the feel through the lever?...ie-you're pulling in the lever with ever bit of strength and it's feeling like it's not equating to brake pressure/power. If that's the case, change your brake line. I was very happy with the Galfer line. MotoStuff.com also sells lines of different diameters. They have a "Pro-Line" that is ultra thin and gives an ultra stiff lever feel. I have never tested it, but it makes sense. Given Yamahas OEM brake system (stiff initial feel, but power tapers off), I would be a little concerned that the "Pro-Line" would be too aggressive at initial squeeze when its dry/dusty. If you're unhappy with power, as in the lever feel is ok but as you're pulling the lever and it feels like the bike is still "rolling" change your rotor. Either the 270mm Wave or 270mm Tsunami would be a great choice. Tsunami does give you more feel or sensation of what the wheel is doing, but will wear brake pads faster. But either way, the high-carbon 420 steel Galfer uses, plus the thicker/stiff rotor and carrier, gives a much better feel and braking power vs. oem. Hope this helps! -Chris

@@chrissiebenhaar8780 thanks Chris! Yea I’ve actually put motostuff regular steel braided brake line on my bike also put the old school brembo master cylinder on it (kris keefer recommended) for sure improved but I jumped on a 2018 Honda 450 and man it was night and day from how great that brake was compared to mine. I probably have 60% of the stopping power that the Honda does and my bike is 2 years newer with only 20 hours on it. So my I took it to get the suspension done and my suspension guy recommended a galfer 280 tsunami rotor he ordered it for me now I just got to go back and put it on real quick. After watching this video I’m really interested to see if that finally fixes my problems once and for all

Do floating galfers not give lot fork dive and intinal grab? Or partly the 1396 HH galfer compound pads aswell?

Upgrade to Brembo! 😁 Thanks for the vid. I got a 2021 450 and more break is always good.

When u get a oversize rotor say for a 2016 yz 250.. can u use sock brake pad size or do u need bigger pads?

Hey question. I looked all over their website and I cannot find the oversized tsunami floating rotor that you said you prefer in this video. Are they not available yet? I have a 2021 kx450 just like the one in your video

Hey Michael, They are available and what most of their SX/MX teams have been running for a while. It is the 280mm Tsunami Superlight Rotor (if you go to video on VitalMX, I have rotor weights and thickness listed. Also a graph comparing the rotors feel vs power). The rotor part/model number I used is: DF200FRY0GA0 I would give GalferUSA a call, I’m sure they can dial you in. 805-988-2900 For the pads, try stock first...if you have enough pad life left. Changing pad material will greatly affect the initial “bite” of the rotor, a pad that’s too aggressive can lock the wheel much easier when the riding surface deteriorates. Also that aggressive initial bite may cause the front to “dive” more when applied abruptly. Because the top of the suspension stroke is softest, with momentum an aggressive bite will cause you to push through the plush zone faster/sooner resulting in some comfort loss as well as increased forward pitching.
