Couldn't be happier to see this in my newsfeed, really glad to hear some myths being busted. I wish I knew more ways to help spread awareness about schizophrenia and psychosis, I'm a person managing it with the diagnosis of psychosis (the positive symptoms of schizophrenia) and am likely to not 'recover' as it is a constant thing I manage with medication and a good support system. Really glad to hear childline speak out about such a highly stigmatised and demonised mental illness. Thank you :)
Hi Liam, thanks so much for this feedback! :) We really appreciate it and are really glad that it has had this reaction. Raising awareness and understanding of mental health issues along with challenging stereotypes and myths is so important to us. One way for you could be to share this video with others and you or any young person under 19 can always talk to the Childline counsellors www.childline.org.uk/get-support/ - letting others know that there is support can help them to feel more confident in speaking out and just even to know that it's always ok to talk about.
So happy to see this! This came at just the right time, at school in English today we were discussing this sort of thing and pretty much all of the views were negative- we're studying Jekyll and Hyde for GCSE and even our teacher joined in with the whole 'schizophrenia is madness and makes people dangerous' myth. I was afraid to speak up (my mum has it and it's really affected my life in a lot of ways) but it was really upsetting, but now I know next time this happens in a lesson I'll direct them towards this video or explain :3
It definitely sounds like the perfect timing and while some people might not have their own experiences of mental health issues, it's very important to challenge these types of myths which can leave so many feeling unsupported and isolated. Thanks for letting us know about this and remember too, you can always talk to the Childline counsellors on 0800 1111 or contact them online at www.childline.org.uk/get-support/ to talk about what you go through. You and other young people are definitely not alone. Good luck in raising awareness!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments - it’s important to us that we listen and give the correct information about how we work. We’ve passed this on and someone will respond either as a comment here or in private soon. Thanks for your patience.
Really great to see this video. So true about educating people on the true facts surrounding mental illness. Would be wonderful that in time the wider community will understanding and be accepting on issues around mental illness . Jonny should be very proud of himself, He's given a voice to others that can,'t speak. Talks eloquently, and informatively, on a subject that people are intrigued with, but mystified by. A person that gives the true facts on a very complex subject. Would be wonderful that in time the wider community truly get it, and stigma is at a minimum. But the only way to achieve this is, is people like Jonny, and other like minded people, like himself, keep chipping away at the coal face of adversity, Day by day, chip by chip, till there is a change. It will not happen overnight but it will happen.
Thanks for this, Debbie. We absolutely agree that while change doesn't happen overnight, it is possible and that's achievable through raising awareness, education and by open discussion from people like Jonny. And also from comments like this! :)
