The Doberman is a very human-focused dog, which is why many owners find themselves needing to train their Dobermans to stop jumping up on them, and their friends who come to visit. In this video, I demonstrate three methods to get your Doberman to stop jumping up on people that are highly effective. Plus, I reveal a method to stop the jumping that I've been refining for a while now that's designed specifically for Dobermans. Yes, my very own anti-jumping Doberman-specific technique called "Hands Up, Don't Jump!" If you want to know which techniques for stopping jumping in Dobermans are worth your time, these are them! So let's stop your Doberman from jumping up on you and visitors who come to your house. This is what you need to do to have a well-behaved Dobie.
My FREE training video "Training a Doberman to Understand Your Commands" is available here: • Training a Doberman to...

I watched your older video on the hands up technique, and was blown away at how quickly this worked for our Dobie pup! Thank you, thank you, thank you! She's a champ with this. Now, if only I could get her to enjoy being alone in the house. She loves her crate any time of the day, except when we leave. If you have ideas, I'm all ears. This week, we've been testing out putting her in her crate while we are working (and our son is virtual learning). We rarely leave the house, but do try leaving for 15-30 mins from time to time (sometimes just to work with her on this situation). She barks the entire time we are away, and is really worked up when we return. FYI...she's currently 7 months old.

The way we've handled this problem, more when other people enter the house, is to command her to get her rope\tug toy. She then brings this to whoever has entered and so instead of jumping wants to play in a different way. It has the benefit of filling her mouth which removes the fear someone might have of the dog biting, and with our dogs nature actually creates distance, as part of the game for her is the chase and being able to grab hold of the rope in the first place as she skips out of the way. It also allows her to show her strength and she soon calms down after. Probably not the ideal solution, but one that works for us.

Love your stuff I have another recommendation that works with many dogs - my last doberman had a really bad jumping habit - and it also worked with him. The method is simple - when the dog approaches to you jump - right before the jump - put your hand in front of their snout - force your hand in their face - no hitting - just tapping their nose with your palm. While you do this - keep walking in - the dog will keep trying to jump - but hand in face is uncomfortable for them. I usually followed with up with a sit afterwards.

I used a game to teach the command "off"; I would tell her "up" and let her jump on me, then tell her "off", lure her off with a treat and gave her lots of praise for following the "off" command. Then for guests, I would use a leash and stand on it, so everytime she tried to jump up on people, she would correct herself. She learned pretty quickly with that one, I also used it for counter surfing.

That sounds like a good idea but a little risky lol. I have a 6 month old dobie and he jumps a lot. I am nervous to teach him to jump. It does make sense though. And my puppy is very good at learning tricks so I might try it

This video couldn’t have come sooner, my 4 month old Doberman I’ve had since 10 weeks is a total social butterfly and loves everyone! with roommates and their guests coming in from time to time it makes it especially difficult to train out bad habits and the jumping is the biggest habit I’m trying to break now while my pups small. , so glad I found this channel! it’s invaluable how much the knowledge has helped me make Apollo turn heads and make guests fall in love with Dobermans. I use a little bottle of binaca mouth spray. It does not harm your dog, but they do not like the taste. One little spritz in the mouth and “off”. Doesn’t take long, Dobers are smart. Also give them to friends and have them come through the front door and do the same thing. The spray also works great for training counter surfing.

The installer was petrified, of the 105 lb, Red Doberman, bearing his fangs. I'll either say OK and he'll stop. If the person Is scared? I'll say "Go to your bed" which is an extra padding futon with a my pillow! 😂 Yeah he's spoiled! Kaiser was pretty much trained at 2. He's 9 now and listens to everything I say. Arlo looks fantastic!

I freaking adore u and Arlo.Just love the fun (and education) in all your clips.Im a Bull Terrier woman in soul.I always had my pack.But after my old girl passed at near 15 i was just that broken i didnt want another dog for years.My husband and children did and in came a rescue pit called Sansa.Well to make things short.A few years later,and thats a few days ago we rescued a European Doberman from a pigstall who wasnt wanted anymore.His name was Troy but i renamed him Mojo.He has bad mannors.But nothing scary.He jumps..steals,runs through open doors in the house like its his last chance to do so..not sure why.He is very much in our spaces.Franticly follows us all the time.Has zero respect for boundries.Needs to be redirected into being respectful for all familiemembers.Has seperation anxiety.He was so skinny when we picked him up and needs time to get healthier weight .And he was dirty but had a bath.He is a big baby and his feet are huge..he is like an alien🤣🤭His earset is completely off.He doesnt walk on his ears so i dont care.But the tough guy look is missing due to his flippety floppety ears.He is a big dog in height.He isnt relaxt in new places but we are slowly getting him exposed to that.He is very smart.He is a spacehog.We are picking up peoples messes but he deserves it.He is very soft but also a typical 10 months old boy with lots of energy.We make him crate sleep at set times to make him used to us needing our moment and him needing his rest.He seems very tired in the night.I lost a Bull Terrier to dcm and i have this fear he might have it so an echo will be a thing..Either way planning on giving him a great life.He gets along great with our other dog.She adores him.She is the boss and he needs that.He just needs a lot of guidance and patience.I dont think he will as perfect as your boy but we aspire for him be happy and balanced.During the day he needs his brain and body challanged and in the evening he is calm.Do u also love the Doberman in the movie Eyes of an Angel (the Tender) with John Travolta and Tripoli the Doberman? Kindest regards from the Netherlands and big hug to Arlo❤

The awkward dance trick worked wonders, thank you! I've adopted a dobie, around a year old, who was abandoned in my neighborhood. He's usually chill, and he isn't malicious, but, he has some stress, with change in environment, diet, and having been abandoned by his previous owner. This behavior will come out in the evenings, and is indicative of what you've mentioned, about being raised the incorrect way, from his time as a puppy. I also, slowly, socializing him. He needs lots of love and patience. I am also considering training (for both of us). Your insights, here, about one behavior, explain a few behaviors, in fact. Otherwise, he's a loving boy.

@younggrillz9916 Год назад
Hi Antonio, any update with your situation. I’m also in the same predicament with a 1 year 4 month old
@antoniomalcolm
@antoniomalcolm Год назад
@@younggrillz9916 Yes, great improvement, in fact. I use a balance of positive reinforcement and behavior correction. Understand, people who advocate for only positive reinforcement are just as shortsighted as those who advocate primarily discipline / behavior correction. I would say, how much of each is necessary depends on your particular situation, your particular animal's disposition, and their age and size (which greatly effects how much trouble they could find themselves in, as a result of any sort of damaging behavior, whether aggressive or unintentional). Also, as many mention, consistency is key. He is a larger doberman, now at 130 or so pounds, and was 104 pounds when I took him in. I do not abuse him, but, because he is large, and a bit rambunctious, I do not treat him like a delicate flower, either, because, he is not. In fact, because he is large, nearly, if not full-grown, it is imperative to correct some behaviors very quickly, else they could have become problems which would would harm someone, even accidentally. Just be careful with behavior correction, as you don't want to hurt your animal or damage your relationship with them. I do use that relationship as a bit of a guage. He likely wouldn't tolerate abuse, so, I think it's a good guage, and, if he gets to sad of a "I've disappointed my pappy" look, I give him some reassurances - I think that's a good example. Also, I don't think I've ever called him a "bad boy". He's not. He's a pup. Who was abandoned. He's a good boy who screws up sometimes. He is a very sweet, well-meaning boy, if a bit jealous and overprotective, at rare times, and, too rambunctiously playful, at others, when he forgets most other animals and humans are, in fact, much more delicate than he. He can also be stubborn about obedience, but is MUCH better than he was. He is my big, beautiful baby boy, and I want him to have a great life.

I’ve been going through most of your videos since we decided to get a Doberman for our family. And I really like your videos. Very informative. I did have a question, do you have a video about the tutorial for the ear taping? Please im very interested before I get the puppy’s ears cropped.

I was worried about that as well when we first got our Dobie but if you look up videos on the zip tie method you'll see its not hard and after doing it a few weeks you'll feel more comfy with it.

In my experience when giving affection, calm hands make a calm dog. Rubbing them calmly and speaking softly is less likely to rile a dog back up. I'll definitely be trying your method when I get my new puppy :)

Love the Intro of the video. Brought back bad memories of when friends would come over and Moses would embarrass me with his jumping. He eventually got it under control as soon as we got better at training him. The “wheel barrel” method would not work with us because my 14 year old plays with our dog using the wheel barrel “dance” as a fun thing to do. It’s their thing!

Haha yeah I guess if that's their game then that would kind of negate that method! So glad you enjoyed the intro. :-D It's funny because Arlo is really good about not jumping but I knew I had to get him to jump like crazy for this intro. So I made it clear to him we we're doing a "game" where he was allowed to go crazy on me when I would come in through the door. He picked up on it really fast for this video. Surprisingly, he hasn't had TOO difficult of a time going back to not jumping after I was done filming (he still wanted to play a little, but figured out that it wasn't to continue).

@@DobermanPlanet I was actually wondering how you got him to do the intro because I knew Arlo would be well trained in not jumping. Great job. It really made me laugh.

Picking up our first Doberman next month, can’t wait. Really looking forward on starting the training. Should there be a settling in period, as in, he leaves the breeder and Mum. Arrives at a new home surrounded by strange objects, smells, people and a cat. Should he be left to settle in for a few days or just start straight away with training ? Love the vids and thanks for all the good advise. Ed in Scotland.

As always great information. My girl never really jumped too much when she was a young pup but now that she is almost full grown at 20 months of age she's become a bouncy spring. She is in various training classes and the one bit of invaluable info I learned was to use a one word command that indicates inappropriate behavior. Use that word only when your dog is not acting appropriately. My word is "no". The instructor uses the word "wrong" for her dogs. So when I enter the house and get that wonderful exuberant greeting I so no...turn my back away from her...walk away without acknowledging her....set my stuff down and when she's sitting I greet her with a hug and a "good puppy". It works for us.

Great tips! Thanks Dobe Mom! Yeah I like using the word "no" but I also found myself using more of a sound sometimes which Arlo naturally picked up on as he was doing something wrong when I make it. It's like a "eh eh Eh!" Hard to describe in text of course though. Super smart dogs, still blows me away to this day!

Hi, i love your videos and the dobbies! i am fascinated by them and I am thinking to get one. I am wondering if a female dobermann will need more exercise then a male Doberman pincher..? Will 2 hours be enough..?

Your method is amazing I used it on my Dob when she was small but the only jumping problem I have with her that she is going to be 3 is when I make my bed she jumps on the bed and being deaf I give her hand signals to get down and she looks at me like nope my bed. Any suggestions because even throwing toys in front of her on the floor she stays on the bed till she's ready to get off. As usual thank you so much you are.awesome and so very knowledgeable.

Hi John! So I have a Doberman and. Now she is 6 months old. She’s really cute and sweet . I’m a kid but there was this little 5 year old year old boy and the park and he was chasing Her and she lived it. There is thus cute pug Penny and she’s so gentle with her. So I would love to thank you so much for everything. You convinced my dad to get a Doberman. My mum was worried that it would be aggressive towards everyone. Now she can’t get away form her lol. The only thing I need help with is barking at other people. So if anyone have any answers please respond. She is crate trained and she goes to sleep straight away. She’s 6 months old and really advanced

Good day John! I own a Doberman puppy aged 3months old and I have a hard time getting his attention, he's so full of energy that he keeps on biting me specially my foot, hand/fingers, we do walks/running every morning for about 15-30mins or more, we play with toys but still the biting won't go away.
