I think it depends, nowhere I went said no. A lot of small businesses fulfill orders and keep inventory in storage units. Since it's more common now I didn't run into any issues with that actually!
When I first saw something similar it was a guy using a small outdoors one for cutting wood! Then it was just a matter of calling and asking. So many small businesses use them for fulfilling orders so I figured, why not! Took time to find one and I had some back up options but I'll probably keep this baby as long as I live close by, even when I move to a bigger studio space!
@@MaLiArtworks186 yes! My first job out of school had a storage unit mini "office" for people too far from headquarters to get things they needed or print or receive packages so that's how I learned it was possible actually!
I have found the smaller, family owned facilities are more open to tenants doing work onsite. U-Haul and some of the others have strict clauses in their contracts about no work being done onsite.
@@topicmentor2976 absolutely. My first job had a unit in a brand new family owned facility that allowed the company to receive mail and packages and even schedule pickups for delivery to customers.
I just got a storage unit to do this very thing. I asked and they are fully aware of what I plan to use it for. In fact, they offered to put in electrical outlets for me for an additional $10 a month.

I've done it. I rented a 10x30 out and put shelves in and ran a store out of it. I would only open up by appointment and I made money everyday. It was great. But I moved to another city. Before I moved I had a blowout sale. The stuff I was selling was free stuff people throw out on big trash day.
Super smart idea! Yea this is slowly turning into purely storage. I've had some buyers come to see pieces in person before purchasing so I can see how a sale would make sense!

I've had my storage for about 5 yrs looks about the same size and I'm paying double. I have to clear it out to down size soon. I love the idea and the fact that it has a window.
Yea, it can be a reshuffle game. Organization is kinda my thing, even at home, but after enough time, it won't be enough space. Reality is, even with my bigger studio soon, I'll probably always keep this based on it being 8 minutes from where I live

@@KeionaRoshelleXO I didn't anticipate having a window, there are really great rechargeable lights you can mount on the side walls or you can get one good lamp with a daylight led bulb and make sure you have access to an outlet! I have a lamp and extra lights for taking pics but they work well when I'm there really early or late 🙂
Hi! This is just a Public Storage building. I would look for "climate controlled storage near me" and find some close by locations to go look at units listed on their websites that are in your price range 😁
Thank you! This is a 12x10 unit, so 120 square feet. This nice thing is, if I temporarily need more space, I can get a much smaller unit in the same building to store completed works for just a month at a time. Some are as low as $65 in this building!

@@tyrajstudio yes that is a good idea. fortunately my unit comes with a light on a 15 minute timer my husband changed the light and put the LED light in there but that's a good idea about the rechargeable LED lights. I'm in the process now to reorganize my storage I have a 10x10 and it has gotten unorganized. Stay tuned for that video I look forward to seeing more videos on your channel.

This is just a Public Storage! No place I visited will say there's windows, so you just wanna make sure to look at your unit in person and see if they have them. I was prepared to not have windows (lamps and battery lighting), but got incredibly lucky.

That plant will leak all over first time you over water. I made mistake of putting plant on top of old fashioned TV, worked fine until the first time I over watered, all down into the TV. Let it dry out 3 days than hmm it worked, good thing husband was mad😂😂😂😂
I have read from pretty much every storage unit. I've looked at that no combustible products are allowed in a unit meaning things like gambol, turpentine, any sort of medium that is used with oil painting. How do you get around that?
That's hard. As a sculptor, the only thing I use that falls in this category is occasionally spray paint or aerosols which I do outside at home just for ventilation so I likely never noticed that. But in general, unless you're breaking the rules, they don't come poke around your unit. I'd recommend just having a reusable grocery bag and bringing those with you each time and taking them home so they aren't stored there.

Asked in person! Being nice in person gets you a yes more often than being a stranger on the phone I've found. Also most of these places actually operate as franchises with individual owners. So calling the line that's operated by corporate, may get you a different answer than directly asking the person that sets the rules for the building you want to work out of 🙂 mine even let's packages get delivered there so long as I pick them up within 24 hours of delivery! Super helpful when I have big or heavy things I don't want to deal with transporting there.
My husband and I bought a home in Pensacola Florida in 1987 for $69,999. I looked it up recently and would you believe it's selling for 😳 $251,000? It's a nice house but it ain't that nice..people can't even afford to buy a home these days...really sad
Oh I could go on and on about home prices. It is really sad. It's part of his I ended up with this studio solution. I was looking at $800-1k monthly for essentially the same size studio in the area where studios are here but no windows. I still work a remote job that pays well but I am one person and money only goes so far these days.
I believe public storage is national! So I'd check. They are a franchise and all have independent owners, Austin I know is generally more strict because they've had issues with the high unhoused population attempting to live in the units ☹️

It's just a regular one! I talk a in the video about all the questions I asked when I went in person. I legitimately just looked online to see if places near me had units in my budget, then went in person to see the exact unit and asked all the questions I mentioned here 🙂
Hey this is in Dallas area and it's a 10x12! The rents do fluctuate. I've seen this size closer to $200 and as low as $135 here. Has a lot to do with climate control, which floor you're on, if it's a drive up unit. They really treat them like apartments 😂

@@JayDee-ve6ml yea, I have family in California. Inflation is bad here too, I just got this unit in October 2021 before everything started climbing. Gas is $5 here and it's normally under $3. Different cost of living but it's all the same. And it sucks.

Hey! I'm in Dallas, TX. I would start by looking for "climate controlled storage near me" and then from the websites you can see if there's elevators, electricity, loading docs, secure entry. Ultimately, once you narrow it down you'll have to go physically look at the units to see what works for you and make sure it's okay to work there. I had to visit 6, but I got it done in one weekend afternoon! Was kinda fun, like apartment hunting haha let me know if you have any other questions!
Yea. They are a franchise so each building is different, I got told no 8 times before someone said yes. So it can be a process. And in some states it's just straight up not legal so it's definitely not a good solution for everyone. ☹️ Check the laws in your state before you spend too much time hunting 🙂
I'm not 100% sure I understand, when I leave I lock it, but while I'm there I usually just have it open or prop it on the side with a small step stool I have so it doesn't close all the way 🙂
Storage units in Colorado don't let ppl live OR work there. They have motion detectors, and can tell when someone is inside one. Here in Colorado you'd have the cops called on you!!!
I lived in Colorado for 8 years. It didn't used to be that way. Lots of things changed in Colorado after the legalization of weed recreationally in 2013 because people were growing and selling out of units. Unintended consequences for sure. Also I think it's important to note, because people keep thinking I come here for 8 hours a day, I'm not here for more than a few hours at a time and usually not more than 3 times a week. I'm also in and out in less time than it takes someone to move things around a unit. So even if I was in Colorado, this wouldn't be as much of a problem. Definitely not a solution that works everywhere or for everyone. But it's definitely an option if the laws allow and you communicate with management 🙂
@@tyrajstudio I see. Yeah, it only takes a few to screw it up for others. I've been car camping for 14 months now, and I love it. I'm serious; I am not suffering! I'm a 67 yo retired lady veteran who got sick of giving all my money away every month for rent, utilities, wifi, so in May 2021 I put everything in storage, took my seats out of my Camry, put a mattress and drawers in, and moved out of my apt. I take showers at Planet Fitness, and this is the best thing I could have done. I'm thankful for the YT videos of ppl living in their cars, as they gave me lots of ideas💡, and encouragement.

Life is too short and there's so many options if we're willing to change our perspectives! I'm in the Dallas area now but I'll be on my way out of Texas within the year. Hi! I can get WiFi here but I definitely wouldn't plan on it being available at most buildings. You can always hot spot with a cell phone but that may not be enough bandwidth for editing videos depending on how you do that. I tend to prefer editing at home with snacks and Bob's Burgers on TV but that's just me lol
@@pepelemoko01 ya know, I have to stand and move around so much with the way I sculpt, I don't end up using the chair I have much as it is. But I'm trying to make myself sit a little more preventatively. My foot flared up in February and if I'm in this for the long haul I've gotta be more gentle with myself 😂
To each their own, not everyone has access to studio space or lives in a big city. There's a 6 month wait list at the studio space within 30 minutes of me and this is a temporary solution for me, I'll never knock or look down on an artist that works from a space like this permanently.

😂 Not in this building! The building manager approved it and most places you just have to follow the rules. Now, LIVING in a storage unit is indeed illegal in most states. But plenty of small businesses use them for work/fulfillment/etc. Ask what their rules are and follow them and you'll be all good! If you scroll through the comments on this video there's quite a few others doing it, but I'm not a lawyer and can't provide legal advice so ask the building and go from there!!
