Its his comic book background. It helps to tell the story thats needed to be told. I remembered when he wasn't doing that well viewership-wise as a comic book-centric channel. I'm happy he found a better income source as a fighting game retrospective-heavy channel.
Honestly I didn't really like his humor style which is unfortunate because it seems like his videos are very well researched. I just I think his humor style is too cringe
Considering Virtua Fighter as a whole and Bloody Roar 4 (not the series, just this specific entry) are treated as punchlines, the fact that Soulcalibur didn't even cross their minds is a little depressing, especially since it's been about 4-5 years since the last one (if you count any DLC or updates).
KOF lore is just amazing. I've tried characters I'd never pick because I needed that team ending. And teams stories progress from game to game arc to arc. Teams break up and teams make up. Primarily a streetfighter player. Never go online with KOF. I buy KOF just for story
I'm an indie game dev working on the art and story side of a fighting game and one of the fundamentals I've learned is that all fighting games are really mult-verse stories. Every time you beat the game with a different character it's a branching timeline. The main storytelling tools in a fighting game outside of the canon are environmentl and worldbuilding. Needs a lot of pre prep time and an approach that favors economy.
"I realize I must sound like a crazy person." -Thorgi Ha, please... If anything, you sold me on your channel. Going to watch that Blazblue video right now.
Across their franchises, SNK are arguably the best with lore, from The Last Blade to even making you really care with a theoretical crossover franchise like KOF. Hope they get back to putting that front and center in City of the Wolves.
Personally, Guilty Gear wins my vote for actually reaching a conclusion where its main character settles down with a romantic partner (who happens to be another fighter) and, seemingly, lives happily and retired from his adventures.
@@ultraspinalki11Guilty Gear’s lore is too convoluted in my opinion, especially in later games. KOF is more concise with their lore, it’s still detailed but not to the point of going overboard.
@@orlanzo2621 If you find Guilty Gear's lore convoluted, you don't EVER want to even glimpse at Blazblue's. Guilty Gear can at least be followed and understood in a chronological manner in comparison to the timetravel mess that is Blazblue. I lost all interest in following it after the first two versions of the game. Gameplay is tight though.
@@ultraspinalki11 Oh yea trust me i know, lol. I've played Blazblue since Calamity Trigger, the story is all over the place, it's a mess, i stopped caring about the lore a long time ago.
This video is love! I can firmly say that Matt and Thorgi's lore deep dives are what got me obsessed with SNK (and much more in love with fighting games), so happy to see you both here nerding out! Thank you for what you do.
i love sf6's "story" because for the actual characters it's just all like "these characters stories are basically over now this is what they're doing with their lives now" while building something up.
@@dat1faclesdude There is more to it than that, the player character gets involved with a lot of subplots that give you a glimpse at the state of the world post-Shadaloo, and you get insight on the new overarching villain. Also, some of the veteran fighters' stories are clearly not over yet (i.e. Ken). SF6's story has a lot of setup for future games.
Darkstalkers has underrated lore. For their technically 5 game releases, every character goes on some kind of arc through all of them. Donovan in particualar has a wild storyline that perfectly sets up for a sequel if Capcom ever pulls the trigger.
Donovan probably has the best "devil within" storyline in fighting games, especially since his makes sense on two fronts with him being a half vampire.
Absolutely agreed! Darkstalkers is such a beautiful property that is underrated. I really wanted to see where the story went after 3, like you said, so many characters went through an arc and I wanted that to continue.
I've always admired in Tekken 4 how nearly all the cast have good reasons for going into the tournament. Bryan needs to find a way to charge his power cell, or he'll die, Paul is out to prove that he won the Tekken 3 tournament but was robbed, Steve is on the run from the mafia for not throwing a boxing match.
That's pretty much why I think Tekken 4's got the best story in the whole series. It does a good job showing just how important the personal stakes are for everyone.
Shoutout to Subspace Emissary that story mode blew my 9 year ago mind! Mario, Pit, Link, Yoshi and Kirby teaming up to chase down King Dedede also Solid Snake, Lucario and Meta Knight teaming up to get back Meta Knight's Halberd. Good fucking times. The person who did that story was Kazushige Nojima who worked on FF7 and Kingdom Heart's story.
Without a doubt my favorite story in fighting games is Soulcalibur, I absolutely love everything from edge/blade- the end of 3, 4 and 5 meander quite a lot, but I was really enjoying what they were doing with 6 and looking forward to what would come next (which unfortunately most likely won’t happen) In Particular, Siegfried’s story is one of my favorites in all of video games, from cocky pretty boy to tortured hero trying to atone for all he’s done, knowing he will never fully forgive himself…. Just badass
I was shocked they didn’t have a section on this, since Edge Master mode basically created and perfected fighting game story modes in one go, at least as far as the tech of the time would allow.
Considering the story is so close to SC1, I was suprised they didn't just reboot it with 6 and just call it SC1. At the very least, that would have gotten them more sales. Now the series might be dead for like a decade.
Max's point about kof fans attachment to specific character arcs is so true and for me it's that way with tekken . I love King's story throughout the games
Blazblue story will also have a special place in my heart, but I am surprised Soul Calibur hasnt been brought up more. Seigfried's multiple game arc, the several interconnected stories and relationships, the rivalries...its so underrated
1:24:48 I love this whole exchange where Matt is describing how you unlock more story trough difficulties in Weaponlord, Justin is like "Oh, that's interesting" and Matt is like "NO FUCK JAMES FOR DOING THAT"
X-Men vs Street Fighter's story was that Apocalypse was abducting both mutants and street fighters while Bison and Magneto are trying world domination stuff, so the Street Fighters and X-Men team up to stop them.
I want Darkstalkers to fuse together with Devil May Cry to give Capcom a reason to make a new Darkstalkers without making it a huge financial risk. Would ofc be really cool too to see Dante and co in a proper fighting game.
I'm so happy that lore-master Thorgi found his way to Triple KO! I remember requesting him as a guest after you guys had your first guest. Anyway, the conversation in this one did not disappoint! In terms of my favorite story and most-cohesive, both would go to Tekken for me. And I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see ya'll build a roster. Another comment mentioned Capcom All-Stars, and I think that is the best idea. As for my next guest request, Frank (Joseph) Yagami!
I am one of the watchers who is "pissed" for not having anything mentioned about the Dead or Alive series. Dead or Alive: Dimensions on 3ds story mode was a nice recap of DOA 1 through 4.
@@dnmstarsi Me too, it would show that these guys are Capcom fanatics, they would go on hours just figuring out what characters, stages, bosses, and what type of story mode would look like.
@@JonathanGruber-uh4fd Plus it also shows that they have an audience that would waste their time hearing what these guys' ideal roster for whatever game they had in mind. Heck, I'm still wishing for Thorgi's Injustice 3 dream skin options and fanfic given his ideas for that game.
@@dnmstarsi Well for me I hope in the end of January, Thorgi hopefully does a Smash Build the Roster and I hope he does Capcom (there's 89 characters in SSBU, so Thorgi has to pick 82 characters & 7 Echo Fighters, and hopefully does not include guest characters).
@@JonathanGruber-uh4fd Honestly, for a Smash roster, I have multiple ideas for rosters that I can't decide which one should be cover first: (Capcom, Disney, Cartoon Network since that idea deserves another chance) That being said, I'd be down for Capcom Smash Evolution (title needs work even for a reference) even if we went the Sega route and did it as "what if Sakurai made Smash Bros for Capcom?" And I have my ideal roster for this game.
Glad to see Thorgi on here, dude's easily one of my favorite guys on RU-vid. For my money, even with the retcons and flaws, the MK/Injustice games are the best in terms of plot. Between the story modes, the vast number of character interactions, and the movies, they've really done a lot to flesh out the characters and make me care about 'em. Soulcalibur VI also deserves a good mention for giving everyone in the roster their own canonical adventures during the story mode. Tekken used to be high on my list, until T6 made my boy Jin a war-mongering idiot. That, and the side characters getting increasingly shafted from T5 onwards. But I do like how the Bloodline cartoon handled everyone, that was cool. Fighting games as a whole could benefit from having more movies and TV shows.
@@anmoldembla4743 IIRC they actually did that (a School Life mode where you slowly build your custom character over the course of an in-game school year) with the evolution disc for the PS1 port of Rival Schools, though that was Japan only. Apparently people liked it so much that Capcom released an standalone expansion / Ver.2 of the evolution disc which added a couple of extra characters, among others. Project Justice also had a custom character feature, but it's School Life mode is instead a Mario Party clone. It's faster paced, but it's just not the same. Though if they were to revive the series they can use SF6's World Tour as a basis for it's School Life mode.
Great seeing Thorgi huest here and fittingly with FG stories and lore. I'm definitely knee deep in that SNK lore too for KoF and I agree with Thorgi in the backstory of characters bei it design and gameplay can really hook you into a franchise. For me it was Kyo Kusanagi's design and then finding out his gameplay change to rekkas was actually central to the story that opened me up into KoF lore.
Glad more people are getting introduced to Thorgi. Seems like a genuinely good guy, and puts out quality work that you know he put 110% in. So happy for you, Thorgi! Happy new year to the Triple K.O. team, and to all of my fellow fans of fighting games. "GET READY FOR THE NEXT BATTLE"...
Nice to see another episode that's just a deep dive on a topic instead of just talking about current news, I fell off when thing started focusing on just going through headlines and covering game/dlc launches.
Fun fact about early Marvel games: The JPN endings and manuals XvSF and MSHvSF seem to confirm the games take place in a Marvel Universe where the SF characters simply also exist. As there's seemingly no mention of worlds colliding, and even some nods to continuity such as Cyclops acknowledging teaming up with Ryu for a 2nd time in MSHvSF. Personally, I think there's 4 distinct continuities in MvC but that's a whole other can 'o worms lol.
The "Marvel VS Capcom" series has its own official designated Number within the Marvel Universe: "Earth-30847". The events of "Marvel VS Capcom Infinite" might muddy things up a bit, though, what with their forced and irreversible merging of "worlds" due to Ultron Sigma. ... Now that I think about it, Captain America's MvC1 ending is the closest to imply their worlds are separate. While the phrasing leaves it up in the air ("With Onslaught's demise, you may return home now."), he is addressing the Capcom cast and summing up the plot (Professor X called out to the heroes to stop Onslaught, and everyone in MvC1 answered the call), so...there's that.
So awesome to see Thorgi on here. He's my favorite. But I absolutely love Darkstalkers because of what was said at the end, the characters have so much story that the gameplay doesn't even matter. Yet it's still so good. My only disappointment in this one was that Soul Calibur wasn't mentioned. That story fascinates me.
So cool to see Thorgi on here! I would pay actual money to see you guys come together and Build a Roster. I don’t even care what it is, just please do it!
Virtua Fighter, like Dead or Alive, has that mysterious-organization-acting-in-the-background trope. This same organization brainwashed Sarah was the same who kidnapped Kage's mother, later to be revealed as Dural, that metallic boss lady that is fought at the end of the arcade ladder. It is true that the entire cast of VF has personal stories revolving around the main plot and Lau and Pai's are among the ones that are intriguing to me. Sounds like Justin found a Marvel vs Capcom 「同人誌」doujinshi or fanzine...with a side of hentai.
As I understand, J6 (the "mysterious-organization-acting-in-the-background" in VF) is collecting data from the world's greatest martial artists in order to build the perfect super soldier that they will then sell to the highest bidder. The various twists and turns therein then come from someone getting too close to figuring out what they're doing (which, I think, is what happens to Sara and later Vanessa). I believe DoA does the same thing, but it's a lot more straightforward in VF. Plus Dural could spank any version of Alpha any day of the week.
I've always felt like, since DOA originally spun out of(*cough--ripped off) Virtua Fighter 2, a potential cross over could be set up with DOA Tech either being part of, or in competition against J6, with the Dural and Alpha projects vying for some kind of military something. Kage and Ryu Hayabusa could also be like secret rivals...or sneak in Joe Musashi of Shinobi, cuz why not?
@@JSRLPadre Tekken is actually more a VF-inspired fighter. I believe Harada has claimed as such. Arguably, one can say that VF is the progenitor of all 3D-fighters. Given the time it came out, Sega was truly ahead of the times with this franchise, which is something that can be said about many of their franchises upon their respective releases. Fun Fact: DOA and Virtua Fighter have already had a crossover: Akira, Sarah, Pai, and Jacky (?) were guest characters in DOA 5.
@@DanteMasaru DOA 1 was built on the same board as VF2, and played mostly the same, except for the then experimental stuff Itegaki did with the block button. DOA 3 was probably the first time DOA really developed a distinct identity, in my opinion. And DOA 5 is not a true crossover in my mind, since they only cherry picked the VF roster(and not even my actual favorite characters), rather than bringing in everybody. That's like saying Tekken 7 is as much a crossover as SF X Tekken. But then, I'm probably just being elitist or something.
@@JSRLPadre Opinions are one thing, but there's also fact: Harada did say Tekken was inspired by Virtua Fighter. I don't deny that Dead or Alive was inspired by VF (see previous comment), but DOA using the same arcade board as VF (if that's really true) doesn't exactly speak of "inspiration" , but rather technology just being shared. I mean, Unreal Engine is a game engine used by many developers nowadays (see Tekken 7and 8). Having select characters from VF does not dilute the fact that it is still a crossover. Mai Shiranui also was playable in DOA and was the only KOF character to do so, if I'm not mistaken, but still a crossover nonetheless. Many often ask, "Where's Bandai Namco's version of SFxTK?" The answer to that is Tekken 7's Akuma's guest appearance. Granted, that's just speculation on my part, but it's a safe one at this point.
27:25 So you mean to tell me that one night, Ganryu decided to listen to Gin and Juice before going to bed, and that's how we ended up getting a Snoop Dogg stage in Tag 2?
Virtua Fighter lore is actually super interesting when experienced outside of the context of the games themselves. Did you know Kage has won the most tournaments? Because he keeps trying to find his mom who was kidnapped by the evil organization running it. Who was the base for Dural. Or got turned into Dural? There's multiple Durals.
Absolutely amazing pod. Everyone was on it today and hilarious. Thorgi was a great guest and knows so much, and so humble too. Definitely got me to subscribe!
Speaking of the MvC2 story, I think what helped me kinda understand what was going on was Baberuthless' stage analysis of them all. I'm also surprised during the MK segment, they only talked about the story mode and not how the arcade mode endings are all canon.
1:15:35 There was a mode in UMVC3 called Heroes and Heralds. It was a battle between good and evil each week. Players fought npc's with power-ups iirc. That was a cool game mode.
I only got into fighting games last year and for sure the final nail in the coffin for me was watching story breakdowns like thorgis and seeing the awesome stories and characters some of these games have!
When it comes to stories in fighting games I often prefer the ones that revolves a tournament of sorts which gets to have some characters interacting with each other and comes around revolving the main boss of the game (kinda in a way of MK9 but sorta). The 1 minor aspect I do get annoyed with is the main protagonist being something special about them that allows him/her to face/defeat the main boss. And examples of this is Ryu who has the Satsui no hadou that Bison has been seeking to have his power and Ryu overcoming it and uses it against Bison. Or Liu Kang who's destined to be the "chosen one" by his mentor Raiden and is able to defeat his enemies whether it's Shang Tsung/Shao Khan or even Kronika. For once I would rather have like an underdog that is a nobody and able to defeat the big bad with his sheer power, determination and becomes someone important in the end. Say either Johnny Cage who wants to prove himself or Luke Sullivan who's now the protagonist has nothing special about him but is somewhat relevant to the story in someways.
something lore related that i thought was kind of fun was in Heihachi's ending in Tekken tag 2 he turns himself into Kuma on accident with this devil serum and Kuma being Heihachi now in t8 feels like a fun callback to that for me
My wife and I both share a passion for guilty gears lore. It is by far our favorite story in fighting games, and honestly the story of Ky and Dizzy is up there for us in all gaming. They are one of our favorite couple to cosplay and we love the world and their relationship in it. Sure there are memes all over the place with gears story but if you do the deep dive the universe and characters are Amazing. I fell in love with Gear back in grade school with the original game and I was the kid that picked characters based on lore in the instruction books and how cool they looked. Kys European white trench coat semi religious vibe always clicked with me, and I loved how Sol played off of his personality. Then as the games progressed and they fleshed him out as a wildly powerful and capable soldier willing to do anything to uphold his values and protect those he cares for and how those values were manipulated in his youth was a great story. All the characters have some great backgrounds and stories that come through in their designs and interactions with one another. The world feels lived in and it allows the whole cast to interact well with each other. Ky and Dizzy are fantastic and I really hope Dizzy gets that Strive announcement, as we want to see a solid story conclusion for the family post retirement from ruling. Plus we deffinetly want to get an updated cosplay built for her.
Bless you Thorgi, I love seeing that passion and totally not biased because I'm a KOF character/lore lover too at all. Nice to see him in this one, it was really fun!
Guilty Gear has had my favorite lore so far. while I understand that many might struggle to keep track of things happening, I find the setting and characters the most engaging. Max mentioned how cool he found Baiken, and she's had great development that's made her into a rather likable character in my opinion. Allthough for something more approachable, I do want to compliment KOF for how they handle what is essentially different "arcs" that span several characters and giving most of them an admirable trait that makes them some person's favorite. Gotta thank Thorgi for making me learn most of those games' history and finding stuff to appreciate.
What?!?! Thorgi did a video with Maximilian Dood, justin wong and matt mcmuscles?!?! So we gonna see them on the next build the roster? Or see thorgi on what happened or the worst fighting game ever? Edit: it’s strange you guys taking about tekken and snk story modes but not mentioning soulcalibur or samurai showdown stories
Mortal Kombat had the best evolve story mode that I've ever played, Street Fighter has the most convoluted storymode. But I still love both in my own way.
@@thisismybassgunoh absolutely 😂 the nasuverse lore goes on forever. Just one character has an entire visual novel where they are the main protagonist and she's getting an anime movie franchise as well done by ufotables (called witch on the holy night)
