Storing Dahlia tubers the EASY WAY! Here's how to dig and store dahlia tubers. Digging and storing dahlia tubers can seem hard, but I've found that storing the tubers "dirty" in clumps is an easy method that has worked for me for many years. There is no one "right" way to store dahlia tubers, rather you just need to find the best storage for your particular situation. Here are the steps I use for storing dahlias dirty in clumps.
- After the first frost wait 1-2 weeks before you start digging your dahlia tubers. This will allow their skins to toughen up and cure for storage. If there is any threat of a freeze dig the dahlias immediately
- Label your dahlias using flagging tape and a waterproof marker
- After 1-2 weeks of curing cut the plants back to 4 inches
- Use a pitchfork to gently loosen the soil around the tubers being careful not to damage them. Lift the tubers and brush off excess soil.
- Place the tubers upside down in open brown paper bags of bulb crates and allow them to dry in a cool dark place for a few days. Do not allow the tubers to freeze. ( I use our detached, unheated garage)
- After drying place the tubers into brown paper bags, roll the tops of the bags down, and place the bags into cardboard boxes
- Store in a location that is 40-50 degrees F and 70% humidity (I use our unheated basement)
- Check the tubers at least once a month for any signs of mold, rot, sprouting, or shriveling, and make any necessary adjustments to their storage location and medium

Omg, thank you! I needed this today!! I've been unsuccessful at storing dahlias for two years now and it's expensive to buy new tubers every year.

As a first time flower grower, your videos always give me the confidence to proceed. This is my first time with Dahlias and it is time to dig. Everyone talks about storing in shavings, vermiculite and other mediums. I wanted something that was easier without requiring me to go out and buy things. Perfect!

Thank you for this! I’ve been following you since Feb and absolutely love everything you share. You are my top go to info on plants! Because I pulled mine out and found gall 😢 I washed all my others too be sure I didn’t have other infected ones. I did actually have some so Im glad I washed them but I think next year I’ll leave them in clumps and with dirt. Im going to try the Saran Wrap method this year but im nervous. Here’s to hoping it works well. One question, how deep is your dahlia bed and what mixture did you fill it with? Thanks for all this knowledge you share!

Great video Danielle. Thank you for sharing this. I grew dahlias for the first time this year and I think I killed them when I dug them up. I’m not sure what happened but they got soft and mushy. I waited for the first freeze and gave them another week but they still got soft. Anyways, I’m going to try following your method next year. Thanks! p.s. Can you share what pruner you used in the video?

Hi Danielle! I know that you mentioned using a storing medium like sand to store the tubers... but then I didnt see you add any to the paper bags during that last step. Do you use sand or anything in the paper bag to store??

I want to have a cut flower garden, but I am concerned that I might end up with more weeds than flowers. I feel my age is against me. This past summer I used Preen on all flower beds except 2. I want black eyed Susan’s, Sweet Williams and columbine to reseed in those 2 beds. I am kept busy trying to keep the weeds out of my large vegetable garden. Is there a way to control the weeds between rows of flowers. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

Can you leave your canna, dahlia, and elephant ears (tubers & corms) in an unheated garage over the winter? I put mine in a cardboard box. I am wondering if I should put them in my basement or the steps of the bilco door to my basement. What's your recommendation?

Do you add peat moss to your Dahlia tubers to preserve them.

I am trying dahlias for the first time this year. I’m in 6b. I have 8 or 9 plants of 3 varieties. One of the plants has bloomed so far. They are all only about 1 1/2 feet tall. Should they be a lot bigger by now? I started them indoors as soon as I received them. They are all planted in the same location.

Thank you very much for this video. I have problems with storing dahlias since in my basement is too hot and in the shed too cold. I wonder if you use vermiculite or sand in the paper bags or nothing at all?

I used Vermiculite last year and found many shriveled tubers. I guess now I know to wet the Vermiculite a little over winter.

My only storage area is a heated basement. I divide them in the fall because of limited space. This year I put some in Vermiculite and some in plastic wrap to see which works better. I store them in crates against a north concrete wall. I open them up monthly and have to spritz them with water because of the higher temperature in the storage area. This worked for me last year. I planted over 80 dahlias this year and only lost 3 to disease. I have so many tubers. If they make it, are you interested in some? Also when I divided I found some worms and centipedes. Do you have any issues with bugs if you leave the soil around the clumps?

My basement is heated but I do have a cold room, would this work or would my attached garage be better?
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm 2 года назад
Hi! Whichever area stays between 40-50 degrees F with 70% humidity will be best! Any warmer than 50 is too warm. 42 is ideal. And anything that dips below freezing will turn the tubers to mush when they thaw.

@@NorthlawnFlowerFarm Great , thank you Danielle for your detailed info, every RU-vid video on storing Daliahs I've seen just states to store in a cool place, which really is not helpful because here in Canada our idea of cool is a lot different from someone in southern USA cool LoL. Luv your show and can't wait to see your dried Xmas tree this year.
