Welcome to Cookie's Critters.
In todays video we discuss where to store your frozen mice and rats, we also demonstrate how we defrost or thaw the rats and mice before feeding to our snakes. Finally we discuss the best options when it comes to purchasing feeder rodents for your reptiles.
Keeping your rodents in zip lock bags will keep them air tight and bacteria free. Rats and mice will remain viable for approximately 3 months in a normal kitchen freezer. the daily opening of the kitchen freezer limits the longevity of the rodents. Having a dedicated deep freeze chest freezer, will increase the shelf life of the frozen rodents to approximately 6-9 months.
Thawing your rodents in the zip lock bags will keep them dry, this will prevent the rodent becoming wet and collecting loose substrate before feeding. It will also prevent cross contamination with scent.
The ideal temperature for thawed or defrosted rats and mice is 36-37 degrees Celsius.
Buying your feeder rodents directly through a rodent breeder will cut your feeding cost significantly.
