A question that comes up often is how we store and organize kids clothes so that they actually get worn (and worn out!) before the kids grow out of them! Today we talk about how we've simplified kids clothes to make this WAY easier and how we store the clothes for them to grow into!

Thanks to Dawn (minimal mom) I currently cleared my entire 1 half bedroom house. It's a small house but every corner has something special which helps me in my life. It adds value to my life. I come from a family who keep everything and anything and it's so stressful and messy. But I started watching your videos about 4 months ago. I wanted a change and was sick of the mess and no motivation. After watching several of your videos I decide to become minimal. My daughter had come back from a heart surgery and chemotherapy. And I wanted to spend as much time as I could with her. And honestly I feel better now that I don't have extra stuff it's made my life my husbands life and my baby's life so much easier. I truly appreciate your honesty hard work. Thank you may the Lord bless you and your family

The “magic number” will be dependent on the frequency of laundry. Our family did laundry by the person (including their bed sheets and bath towel), with a separate load for master towels and linens. That made it simple for me to teach the children to do their own load the year they were 7 and turn responsibility of laundry over to them from 8 years on. We each had a day that we considered the washer and dryer “reserved”. This also meant that they didn’t toss everything in sight into the laundry basket when it wasn’t needing washing. For us with one load each person each week our max number was 8-9 outfits (or days worth). That provided a day or two of grace if needed for travel or “oops!’ Weeks. I appreciate that you have so clearly identified that sometimes the “organizing” problem is really an “inventory” issue! So true!!!

Years ago o found a blog written by 4 mamas with 8-12 children each. Their recommendation for storing clothes was to Not store it if you won't use it in 3 years. Consider season, size, style, and gender. That was a great tip for me.

I am so glad I found you! We have 7 children and have been working on decluttering for the past few years, the videos have given me a boost to go further with everything. We have a small house for the size of our family. 4 girls in one room and 3 boys in another and things get messy quickly. I'm having my girls watch your videos while they clean there room today. They are ages 20, 18, 17 & 13. I am hoping that by watching your videos they will want to simplify their stuff. There room is never clean! And I refuse to clean for them anymore, since they are old enough to take care of their own stuff. We are going to put the principals of decluttering to work. I can't wait to get to my kitchen and pantry! Thank you for putting all these videos together! Thank you for being so real!

I love that you say visiting and spending time together, like we have all been sweet friends for years. 🥰 I had simplified down to around 10 outfits (top and bottom that go together, I need them to be a match!) plus some dresses. This last time around for my two oldest girls, who are 9 and 7, I had them pick 6 outfits (again matching tops and bottoms) and 4 dresses acceptable to wear to church. For my Littles I stuck with 10 outfits (because 3 and 1 year olds get dirtier more often) and 4 church outfits/dresses. What also helps is that because we homeschool and aren't concerned with what people see us wearing every day I have all of mine (for the most part) wear the same.thing two days in a row. This means they're wearing 3 outfits a week (MT, WTh, FSat) and then something for church on Sunday. So by keeping 6 outfits this is really TWO WEEKS of clothes for them. And then the 4 Sunday clothes.are.rotated through so they wear something different each Sunday of the month. I also then am able to wash ALL FOUR of my children's clothes in ONE LOAD of laundry ONCE a week! 🙌 I put them in the wash Friday nights before I go to bed , dry them Sat morning and then my oldest two fold and put theirs away when we do house chores. Oh, and any hand-me-downs we receive or clearance clothes the next sizes up I also store in a tote. I go through them seasonally with my Bigs to see what they like and will actually wear, find matches for them, then pass along the rest.

In my hopes to have more children I kept so many baby/toddler clothes. While we still are hoping and praying for more children, I realized I am keeping a blessing for someone else to use. I was able to bless several of my friends with clothes they could use. It felt great to be rid of those clothes and I think if I did get pregnant, I could just but more and honestly the clothes I kept could still cloth a couple babies. Thanks for your encouraging videos

It's so much easier to get rid of the things we "might use" when you know they'll be a blessing to someone else! I thought I'd given away as many of our baby boys clothes as I could at this stage, and then a mama I know started fostering a little boy who came to her home with nothing. All of a sudden clothing was flying out the door!

I love all this so much! I spent waaay too much time storing and sorting clothes among my 5 kiddos over the years!! I add my witness to yours- please don’t store too many clothes. They do go out of style fast. Let someone use them rather than store them. I had to be very frugal- and I think it leads to holding on to a lot more than you need. I wish I had your advice 15 years ago.
@lindar1715

I also think that having too many clothes leads to bigger messes than kids can handle- besides their parents. It stresses the kids out, and I wonder if parents realize what they are asking of their kids to keep too much inventory organized/cleaned/picked up.

This is truly valuable advice! I have saved so much money over the past two seasons already simply by downsizing my son's inventory. He always had so many shirts and sweaters. Now we keep his 10 favorites, and that's it. I also stopped buying "special occasion" clothes for him such as finer button-down shirts or jackets because whenever we reached a family birthday or a major holiday he had usually already outgrown them. Wasted so much money on those...

I was at Walmart right before I came home to see this posted. The had racks and racks of clearanced clothes for kids, much of it $1. I grabbed a bunch in the next 2 sizes up for next summer because if they skip a size it still was just $1 and I just donate the excess. As I was walking around it popped in my head the episode where you guys talked about taking more than your fair share. I ended up going back to put a bunch back and just kept some of the things that I'm nearly certain will get used.

I like to keep a list on my phone of how many clothes my kids have. I like to buy a size or two up when I see things on clearance so when they need bigger sizes they already have their next wardrobe and it didn't cost an arm and a leg because we didn't have to run out and buy them right then when they're needed. It also helps me to not over buy because I know how much we already have and what we still need. Helps a TON! Example: 3T Pants 3 Shorts 4 Long Sleeve 4 Short Sleeve 5 And so on for each size :)

So true about things going out of style quickly. I was just given 3 boxes for my 4 month old from my cousin who's daughter is 9. I didn't think I cared about fashion that much but most of the items feel very dated already. Too bad they weren't shared sooner with someone so they could have gotten more use.

So true about not using "out-dated" clothes for your kids. We also got a lot of hand-me-downs, but only ended up using a fraction of those things. Grandparents always bought really cute new things, so these always were the favorites.

Yes to the storing the “too big” clothes in their closet! Also now that my kiddos are getting older, I save the previous seasons clothes and go through them before getting new stuff. It’s hard to ditch the mentality that they grow right out of it in one season (like they do as babies). So much of the previous year’s stuff still fits!

THANK YOU for watching!! 👕 I love what Susanna shared that kids wardrobes require seasonal editing, not annual... totally agree that this is the best way to stay on top of it! ♥️ I'd love to know how you organize and store clothes your kids aren't currently wearing? Okay, so I currently have two bins (the size of yours for future clothes) for each of our kids. One for warm seasons and one for cold. Every season, I rotate the clothes from the oldest's bin to the next younger's but I don't keep a set amount of outfits. I keep all that might fit in the future, even stuff that might not fit for two more years. AND, we have SEVEN children, three above 13, so the clothes are also bigger now. What I'd like to do is reduce that number to one bin per child, but I think for the older ones, I might need to get a bigger bin. Maybe I could stack the warm season clothes on one side and the cold season clothes on the other. But, I still have the question of what to keep in those storage bins. Should I only keep the clothes that I'm guessing will fit them for JUST the next season, and get rid of the rest? I don't know why this is so hard for me. Lol

I store all kids clothes in each of their wardrobe but I go through them in spring an autumn to see what got too small and needs to be replaced before the season for that type of clothing starts. I have two boys who are in the same size clothing despite their age gap (9 and 10 yr) and a daughter (4yr). If I sorted out clothes from my boys I do keep very little for my daughter. Mostly slim cut pants or shirts she would definitely wear too. Pokemon and super heroes don't go out of style and she loves them. I did keep all baby clothes because I couldn't let go. Now I actually am at that point where I want to let them go. That's my project for autumn. I hope to be able to go through all their toys one day...

You are spot on with your tips. My kids are 20, 18, and 13. All BOYS. In addition to managing the volume and clothes going out of style, my boys had 3 different body types. Not much could be handed down...especially true the older they got. I used to try to make a big deal of getting “new” clothes by going “shopping in the basement”. We do this for school supplies to use up what I have stored. Now my goal? Don’t keep so much inventory! Thanks Dawn for teaching me that important lesson!!! So much less stress.

I may still have more kids but you’re so right about seasons and sizes not always working out. My daughter is 5 and from hand me downs, I have clothes that are 12 years old in that give away pile! Styles definitely have changed in 12 years! It feels liberating to see all of that stuff go knowing that I will for sure still have everything I need if I were to have another baby.

I recently got some hand me downs from a former neighbor for the fall. I just moved everything out of Natalie's dresser that was in the wrong size (3T) and kept only 4T with 1-2 exceptions of items that are baggier. Then I could see what I "NeedeD" from the neighbor and so we didn't have things that were redundant. And I finally decided to hang all her dresses and sweaters which helped a ton.

Love the- one bin for current clothes, one bin for storage, and keeping the storage bin accessible. In the past I have kept too much in storage! What about shoes? Do you keep future shoes/church clothes in the same grow-into bin? Would love to see a video on how you would counsel someone with teens- they need their own space and to make their own choices, but often their choices....overflow. Thank you for the hope!

I have 5 outfits each for them and 3 pairs of pajamas with a few other odds and ends, but both of their wardrobes fit in the same closet either hanging or in the baskets and I would never ever go back! My husband and I paired down our wardrobes, too and now we don’t own a single dresser or chest in our home. It feels amazing! I’m from the UK and I have to say, school uniform makes life so much easier! I have 3 daughters and come September 2 of them will be in school so they really don’t need many clothes apart from uniform. My youngest is just 3 months old and I never said no to hand me downs from friends and kept EVERYTHING! It’s really hard to find the right sizes in our messy loft which is stuffed full. You are helping me realise that having so many kids clothes to manage actually makes my life harder. I have started to consider what is worth storing from my older girls and what is mis-matched or in poor condition can go. I am looking forward to giving clothes away as baby outgrows them too, thank you.

I have an 8 year old girl and 5 year old triplets gg/b. I have been such a hoarder with clothing from my 8 year old. My thought was, she has 2 sisters that can wear these as hand me downs. 🤦🏼‍♀️ the other thing was my oldest wore size 6 from age 5-7, she can actually still some. I’m not sure why other two girls (identical) will grow like their big sister. This is now on my list of things to minimize. I am loving this journey. I’ve tried before but this time it feels more like a lifestyle change. I love the spiritual connection!!

Love love love your channel. Since watching you I've purged half of what I kept from our older son for our younger son. Admittedly looking in their closets at current clothes I think "oh, they might wear that" but when I know it's time to decrease inventory here's what has worked for us: I hold up 2 shirts and say "which do you want to keep?" Even if they say both for some I still purge a bit. Then it's not as overwhelming for then to look at everything and pick what stays. Would love a video on kid's trinkets (ahem, junk) that although small can quickly overwhelm their drawers!! :)

Thanks for this video! We have been going through our 4 kids clothing this week, and it has really been an eye opener. I watched your video on simplifying the kids wardrobes before we started, and it made it such a breeze. I can see that our laundry is going to be drastically reduced now. That is probably the biggest time drain in our household. Many thanks for all of the great content!! ❤

Hi, for my first daughter we bought everything that caught my eyes. Most of the dresses were made of some fancy material which my daughter would cry the moment I put it on her. All the baby items in online and I did shop, we had one separate room for her items and clothes. We got more gifts. But for my second daughter apart from gifts, we bought only what she wants not what I want. It made a huge difference, she likes rayon type dress materials which is very economical for us.

Thank you for your inspiration! My husband just admitted that he may be a minimalism convert! He's organized his closet, and is starting to suggest furniture and other items to declutter!! I'm a year into my journey (in part inspired by your toy series) and so thankful that he's beginning his!

Totally agree about not keeping everything to pass down. I used to do that and found I didn't use most of it. I now do the same as you- just keep the really good stuff.

Hello Dawn, Love all of your videos. I use this same idea for my clothes as well. (Got the idea from you of course) I was so overwhelmed for so many years. Like you, I just kept looking for that perfect organization system. And nothing worked. I had just my clothes in 2 closets and a dresser. I can't remember which of your videos I heard it in first but, when I heard you say "To much inventory to manage" a light came on and oh what changes we've made. My master closet is very large (I'm from Texas. Remember everything is bigger in Texas ;) and I now have all my clothes and shoes In 1 closet with room to spare. Hubby's side of the closet is the same way. Words are not enough to say thank you for all ya'll do to make this journey easier for all of us. Please tell the whole gang we said Hello from Texas. God Bless.

Another helpful video! Thanks for sharing. I'm spending the summer actually LOOKING for things to get rid of because I like the idea of having less to take care of and less stress! So sweet to see your kiddos too! Hugs from London!

I really needed this video, I have one child, soon to be 2 both girls and I swear I have about 400 pieces of clothing in each category lol, my first daughter was 18 years in the making so when it finally happened both myself and my mum went nuts, mainly second hand but then I’ve also found myself buying when I’m at the store too, so I really need to be ruthless and go through it all instead of having to wash constantly and her not wearing alot of it

Looking forward to watching this later this evening! Just today in the attic I found the cutest coat that used to belong to my older daughter, and it would have been perfect for my younger daughter this past winter. Oh well... With your tips and motivation, I’m already getting better at this sort of stuff. Keep up the great work. We love you!

Great video! Yeah we're in the stage of not sure if we'll have another one so I've decided to keep a capsule wardrobe just in case so pretty much just a couple basics/versatile pieces in each size and that's it.

Hey, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos and how useful I find them. Not only do I find them useful but I find that you have a very calming manner and put my mind at ease about some aspects of motherhood that I usually manage to get myself worked up about. I’m from Kerry, Ireland which is pretty far away but I can still relate a lot 😁. Thanks and keep up the good work.

So so glad I saw this. I’m currently going through my older son’s clothes, boxing them up- because I had ALL his clothes in my younger son’s room for ‘someday’. As I was boxing them all up, I was like dang. No wonder his room was completely jam packed!! Seriously, I have about 8 boxes (not small ones, either)- currently sitting in my living room, that we were going to move to the garage. That’s insane!!! Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks. Going to go back through them all, and only put what fits in a large tote to save. Will be much more manageable!

Hello from Durban, South Africa. I am absolutely loving watching your videos on minimalism and de-cluttering. Started watching them about 2 months ago and have been steadily going through our home and peeling off a layer at a time, though I think we may still be on the first layer! I cant believe how much stuff we have and how little we use most things. I was sorting my kids play room yesterday and could not believe how many they have and i think they only play with about a tenth of them, probably less. Thanks so much for sharing. Blessings and best wishes for a very successful channel.

One summer, I had 3T pajamas on the brain and I bought them at every garage sale I went to and ended up with SOOO many lol Now, I try to keep a list in each bin of what's in there and what's needed, but I don't always remember to bring it. I should join the 21st century and put it on my phone ha!

Stayed up so late tonight as I was planning Brownies with another leader (if you don't know it's like girl scouts) I'm in Scotland and it's late here. So glad you uploaded before I went to bed as I feel it's not so bad as your videos cheer me up so much. My daughter always says 'I don't know what to wear! ' in the morning. I've been simplify my clothes a bit and it seams to be rubbing off as she is better at letting go of things now so I'm going to do this with her soon. Thanks again X
