This episode, I answer a series of questions sent in about pu'erh storage. This is one of the more hot button topics in the west.
Over the course of the episode, I give some context on how pu'erh storage has been stored in east Asia, and talk about what I find to be acceptable parameters. Also talked about are how my teas have been aging in the 5 years I've stored them here in Seattle. Many more questions answered as well.
Thank you for those who sent in questions!

Thanks for the answer to my mini-tuo anxiety. After your discussion of temperature and humidity, I realized I needed to take a couple of packages of sheng Puer out of the refrigerator. Thanks for that, too!

Thanks for answering. I was concerned with the lack of airflow in my pumidor (just a Coleman cooler with a Boveda pack), but it sounds like opening it a few times a week allows for adequate gas exchange.

No problem. I think that'd be sufficient.

I add fresh honeysuckle blossoms to a white tea or a green tea to give it a nice floral nose in the morning .

Thanks for the answers! I live in a part of Canada where the winters get really dry and cold, as cold as -40 with a humidity of 15% at times and the summers can get up to 30c with humidity often in the 80% range. So it changes quite significantly through the year. My indoor humidity in the summer is often 30-50% and 20c whilst winter is often 15-30%rh. I want to store a couple dozen cakes, not necessarily for aging but just to enjoy them for a handful of years without losing quality. Right now they’re just stored on a shelf out of light and in their wrappers. I have limited space in my apartment. What would you recommend?
@TeaDB
@TeaDB 5 лет назад
I'd just seal them up in that case. Either in a ziplock or a mylar. The mylar will probably be a bit better at preserving the cake.

Do you reuse ("recharge") boveda packs?

Awesome video! Do you think there is any reason not to store puerh in stainless steel? I tried making a coolerdor with an old cooler and a brand new cooler and it’s been hard to completely deodorize it, but I have a stainless pot I rarely use that could hold about 2-3 tongs I thought I’d test out on the journey to mini fridge. Also, how do you deodorize a mini fridge, that seems even trickier than a cooler? Or do I probably have too high of a bar for odor elimination? I washed with dishwasher soap, aired out at night several nights and used crumpled newspaper to try to deodorize the coolers. Thanks!
@TeaDB
@TeaDB 5 лет назад
Thanks Douglas! I don't see a very obvious reason to not store it in stainless steel if that works. So, yes it is possible that your standards of odor elimination are higher. What I did was I took a 10 year old mini-fridge that was relatively clean to start with, wiped it down thoroughly and aired it out fully open for several more weeks. I have not noticed it imparting anything into the tea. Cheers, -James

Hello from Wales , Hobbes Mr half dipper wrote an article claiming United Kingdom has humidity simular to Guangzhou but is much cooler .He claims his ten year old pu erh is aging much slower than asian stored pu erh .Do you have any thoughts about this and possible problems . It is always raining in Wales. Best wishes Guy

Hi Guy! This is a good question and I think pretty relevant to western storage in a lot of locations. I'd pay attention to the question on storage in San Francisco about half to 2/3rds through. A lot depends on the conditions you intend to store it in. Storing it indoors in a heated area is likely to be hotter but drier when put against something that more closely mimics outdoor conditions. Either way I personally think the closer comparison is Kunming (low-mid temperature, moderate-high humidity) which most people consider to be pretty dry storage. -James

Tinnedbagged, minimized airflow/humidity.

No games, just too much computer use.

@@TeaDB Ah, unfortunate. May I recommend very gradually increasing mouse sensitivity? Smaller movements to move the cursor the same distance create less strain on the wrist. Very tiny increments so you barely notice sensitivity change, of course, otherwise it's too much to get used to at once. Repetitive strain injuries are annoying, recover quick~
