As a network engineer that builds ISPs for a living, I would love to see more sparkies cross the fence occasionally and work in the network world... Just the same as I would love to work in a sparkies world where networking stuff is needed.

They are starting to blur the borders. I'm into DIY both fibre optic backend with hypervisor's and Enterprise class network. Also three phase off grid power system. With home assistant. Going to integrate the heating systems. Their hand in hand... I've not met anyone that does all 3. So I'm left with DIY.

We need more tradesman and technicians like that to ensure we leave the industry in better hands than we found it. I wish all engineers took such pride in their work. I bought a house where the gas installer seemed to be the most lazy half-assed engineer in the world: leaky and damaged radiator bleed valves causing pressure loss (previous homeowner thought it was normal), terrible soldering (really sloppy and all down the copper, far too much used), uninsulated pipes, pipes too thin & bent instead of using corner joints, pipes too close to floorboards causing creaky floors. Then I had an install of a heat pump to turn it into a hybrid system, and they decided to neglect insulating the pipes on the lower floor, just because they couldn't access them - but they didn't tell me this, they just threw the insulation in the loft... Not only this but the heat pump installer said pressure loss is normal also!!! I've been slowly correcting the mistakes...

Just commenting about the A1 and A2 going through the thermostat and overload (16:45). As you know because you literally pointed it out in the video- You only need to run either the wire going to A1 or A2 to break the circuit to the coil in the contactor through the switches. I always break A1 which is the phase the systems I build and connect the neutral to A2 or if it is 24v it is G to A1 and G0 to A2 or 24v+ A1 and 24v- A2 depending on the coil voltage on the contactor/relay. Best regards from Sweden.

Why wouldn’t you use a single Eddi with their optional internal relay to cascade 3 immersions off the same phase?
@GreenWhereItSuits
@GreenWhereItSuits 9 месяцев назад
Just a question on the thermal battery - this isn't a hot water cylinder storing hot water to be sent to the taps, this is storing hot water/fluid that will use either a plate heat exchanger or a coil within the battery to transfer heat to mains pressure hot water?
@alt3241
@alt3241 Год назад
You often do not need to involve a inverter to take power from solar panels for powering a resistance load for heating as only a duty cycle limit to keep the resistance element from overheating ( melting ) and a thermostat to limit heated material ( in this case water ) from overheating ( in this case water from boiling and then causing a steam explosion ) . A bimetallic thermostat switch may have a maximum current but no minimum current and its lifespan is enhanced by use of low voltage and current through transistor controlling ( with snubber protection) the power to a relay ( usually called a contacter ? ) multipole single throw relay ) ) thus no need for the exorbitant expense of inverters for heating .
@corymac
@corymac Год назад
These aren’t inverters, they’re diverters. They have the inverters on the home anyways, these just track the excess power and send it to the heating rather than exporting ( wasting ) it

I think the use of 'buzz words' like 'Solar battery' are great for getting hits on you Tube etc, but let's not forget this is simply a photo voltaic 'dump' that has been used for years on off grid systems to utilize excess solar power once battery systems are full to capacity. It is of course using more tech to program WHEN it does so, and split energy between sources (feed in tariff, car, battery store etc). but just like so much of this generation / internet / social media............... its 7 parts spin / marketing for the masses........

Wow very impressive but I'm sure not really economically viable. Any ideas on the material cost, tank and the Eddi etc. Great set up Cheers from Oz
@corymac
@corymac Год назад
It’s usually a retrofit option, in England we typically have these tanks and heaters installed, so it’s just the cost of the eddi which is about £400 per unit. The payback time is usually 3-4 years 😁👍🏼

They went to all that trouble fitting high end vaillant kit and then stuck the UFH on a fixed high temp mixer and then on/off zoned it to death with stupid room stats. There is a ton of energy to be saved on the heating set up alone. Call me if they want it doing proper like.

Unfortunately we couldn't get hold of any of the VR wiring centres from Valliant to be able to run a multi-temp system yet. Apparently they have a chip shortage, and no ETA. If you want to get in touch, would be nice to talk it through!

So, once the thermal battery is all heated up, how does one extract the energy? Is it just an electric hot water heater or does it actually produce electricity from the heated water?
@corymac
@corymac Год назад
Basically, rather than export the excess energy the inverter is producing ( on top of battery storage ) , it will use it to heat the buildings hot water system instead of the gas that is usually used 😁👍🏼
@sevilnatas
@sevilnatas Год назад
@@corymac Ah, OK, thanks for that. I must admit, I was a bit excited, thinking that someone had worked out an electricity to hot water and back to electricity cycle. But the solar powered hot water heater makes sense, as opposed to the common natural gas powered water heater. The solar is almost free heat, whereas the natural gas is all cost.
@corymac

Can you explain more about this 3 phase thermal battery? Is it a close system for heating or act as a boiler?
@corymac
@corymac Год назад
Sure thing! Basically, in this setup the gas boiler will heat up these water tanks, and the hot water for the house comes from these tanks. They usually come with electric elements as a backup incase of boiler failure. We have hooked up these Eddi’s to monitor excess / exported power from the solar, and will be using it to heat the water ‘thermally storing the energy’ to be available later ( when the sun might not be shining ) and save gas!
