WARNING! NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS!
FIGYELEM! FELKAVARÓ TARTALOM!
In this video You can watch, how storks killing their babies. These are sad moments, but it is a part of nature. Stork kills its own baby, when necessary, when not enough food or storklet is sick. In this case the adult stork throws baby out of nest.

As harsh as it may seem, the reason the little one was removed was because it is the last hatch, and was not as big and strong as the others. Nature dictates that the weak should not survive. Instead of using so much food, energy and more time on the little one, it os better spent toward those that are stronger. They have limited amount of time in the year that they can afford to care for their brood. Eliminating the weaker and smaller one or ones shortens that time that they have to care for their young. The others will grow faster now because the food shared between them is now a 4-way split instead of a 5-way split. Not to mention, being smaller means you get overlooked sometimes when feeding does occur. Instead of prolonging the small chick's suffering, removal was the best option. I am not saying it isn't sad. It is just the way it goes.

I witnessed such a story in our nest near my house. Luckily, I was nearby and was able to pick up the 5-day-old chick from the nest. I was shocked - what to do with it? Then he calmed down, read the advice and began to raise him instead of storks. That's how we lived. The storks raised four in the nest, and I raised the fifth on the ground. I made him a separate nest in the barn. He fed fish, mice and chickens. He grew up strong and even began to fly earlier than his brothers in the nest. But this is a lot of work and it is difficult to do it every year.

True, but killing the weak ones and sick helps to maintain a healthy and strong population. Humans on the other hand don't do that. They help sick and weak babies and those babies grow and produce offspring so in the long run population gets degenerated.

Edit (after 2 years I guess): Ok apparently this needs clarification. I was describing how I personally felt while watching the video. I was not saying that what happened was right or wrong, or that that even matters. It’s always heartbreaking to see something helpless suffer, especially at the hands (or in this case beak) of someone they’re relying on to care for them. It’s tragic to see that their last moments were full of confusion and pain. This little guy was innocent and just drew the short straw…

Same thing with other birds. They lay late spare eggs. If the older ones look healthy, the discard the spare. Resources are limited. Raring relies on timing and seasons. Spare ones are for the worst cases which may be harder to raise (off season).

I don't ACTUALLY think that they're thinking these things. I KNOW that baby birds don't give a shit about their siblings. I was just making a funny. @Stellvia Hoenheim Birds in general are assholes. I had a parakeet recently try to raise a baby (in a food dish! The idiot! No matter how many times I tried to relocate her and the eggs to a proper nesting box, she refused to accept anything but the food dish!) and another one of the parakeets managed to get to the baby and pecked it to death. Broke my heart. Damn thing still had blood on its face to prove it was the murderer, too. They look small and cute, but they are heartless when they shouldn't be. Also, my mom used to work with lorikeets, and she told me this story of one in particular. Apparently, it was this bird's life mission to poop on her. He would follow her from his perch above, and aim his butt at her. Finally, she stopped, waited just long enough for him to aim right at her, and then suddenly moved, right as he pooped, dodging it just in time. Birds are assholes. The whole lot of them. 😂

I'm afraid other chicks weren't trying to "protect it." They rather considered it to be a source of food their parent (not necessarily mother, it could be a father) provided. The cruel mechanism of sacrificing the weakest young for the sake of others is very common in other birds as well, not only storks. It just happens, they are very social and tend to live among humans so it is easy to just take a peek at what is happening in the nest.

@@ianzhao5693 the exact definition does not matter if you examine it relatively. Think about consciousness not like a quality that a creature has or hasn't, but like a quality that a creature can have in varying degrees. The stork might not have a high degree consciousness enough to preview its own death. Or: Consciousness is a quality of creatures that gives them the ability to being aware of their own existence, mind and surroundings. Varying degrees of consciousness can be measured at different species, and it is irrational to imagine yourself as the stork and still think of your life as a human, as a stork or any other living being might have wayyyyy lower degree of consciousness than a human.

The word 'nature' might be misused more than any other word in human language. Nature is the stork killing its child because it's unfit. That's what nature is, that's how nature works. When humans attribute a certain goodness to 'nature' (as in, the rest of the animal kingdom), as if they were innocent and we people were evil, that is just dumb. Here in this post we can all literally see examples of how many people care about that baby stork far more than its own mother. In fact, the reality is that our own 'intelligent animal' nature makes us more empathetic and capable of holding these feelings than other animals are, which is why some people are horrified at the way other animals truly behave sometimes. If there is a particular goodness in animals, it is precisely in humans.

This is what we should use on that evil bird. The M4 is extensively used by the US military, with decisions to largely replace the M16 rifle in US Army (starting 2010) and US Marine Corps (starting 2016) combat units as the primary infantry weapon[7][8] and service rifle. The M4 has been adopted by over 60 countries worldwide,[9] and has been described as "one of the defining firearms of the 21st century".[10] Since its adoption in 1994,[9] the M4 has undergone over 90 modifications to improve the weapon's adaptability, ergonomics and modularity, including: the M4A1, which strengthened the barrel and replaced the burst-fire option with a fully automatic option; the SOPMOD, an accessory kit containing optical attachments; and the underbarrel weapons such as M203 and M320 grenade launchers to the Masterkey and M26-MASS shotguns. In April 2022, the U.S. Army selected the XM7 rifle, a variant of SIG MCX Spear, as the winner of the Next Generation Squad Weapon Program to replace the M16/M4.[11] History

Humans belong to large societies, so we have many resources to take care of many children. The storks are all by themselves. They have to gather food every single day just to live. Plus storks are notorious for killing off their babies. They usually lay 4-7 in one nest and so they aren’t much affected when they kill off one or two of them. Humans (typically) only have one child we spend many years into protecting, so we deeply value human children.

The growth is more dramatic with smaller birds that might go from hatching to fledgling in 2-3 weeks. Storks are large birds that take way more time than that. This is clearly not just a few days apart. I’d wager maybe a week apart and by then the siblings are grown and outcompeting it, leading to further loss of nutrition from little food obtained and possibly stunted growth.
