The pilot is a 36 years old Portuguese from Lisbon. Great landing. Massive balls and professionalism.
well I doubt that the pilots want this in their resumes. In reality they got scolded by Etihad's flight crew training manager for this landing. This is quotes from the memo sent to all Etihad pilots after this incident: "The official view from the Training Department is a simple one - THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WANT TO SEE. There is a time to give an approach away in the interest of safety [...] If you see such a thing in the sim (simulator) it would be a grade of 1 (out of 10)...."
Obviously pretty good skills by the pilot, but also a massive testament to how well the landing gear is built and can withstand such side loading at this weight. Pretty impressive no tires were blown during this landing
Yes, when crabbing on approach, landing is supposed to be done a certain way to avoid damage to the landing gears and wheels which aren't designed for sideways landings. A training video gave instructions that the upwind wing is supposed to dip as the nose lines up straight with the centerline, and the upwind wheels touch down. Then the downwind wing drops and its wheels touch down. The pilot then puts the nose down immediately. In this landing, all the wheels hit at a sharp angle, putting massive stresses on the wheels and landing gears. The pilot then allows the plane to roll off the side of the runway into the grass, rather than stay on the tarmac. I wonder what the maintenance crew thought about this landing and what they'd be checking at the hangar.
Also, I've been told that aileron correction is preferred over strong rudder adjustments because the rudder is not designed to handle massive stresses. For example, the Airbus crash in NYC on 2001-Nov happened when its pilot used strong rudder input to battle the air flow from the jet that took off just before it. The rudder snapped off. When Airbus' chief pilot flew a simulator, he used the ailerons without a hitch.
1975 Flying home from the Philippines in a Stretch 8. We had to land in Anchorage Alaska to refuel. We too were headed into a strong headwind. Sitting in the back of the plane and on the port side. I was looking out of the port hole , wondering, why am I looking down the runway in front of me instead of looking at it as it goes by? Then bam. We hit the runway and we were jerked towards amidship of the plane as was everyone else on the portside. On the starboard side every one looked as though they were trying to hit the bulkhead. I tell you it was the most thrilling landing that I have ever had. It was like being in the last car of a fast roller coaster. Getting jerked around every curve and bend.
@Zacky531 I am a pilot and that was well out of limits; so much so that the senior training captain at Etihad issued a memo to all of the company's pilots as a stern warning.
@@user-ju5tc3fz9d I am sure that he did not actually taxi onto the grass, it is an illusion. The grass you see is actually hiding the taxiway. If he had taxied onto the grass he would have stopped immediately and it would have turned into a major incident.
@@paulusescariot Roger that and thank you Sir! Double checked the footage and it seems I missed that illusion at first glance. You're absoultley right, Sir, if the ac was to roll off the grass it would have stopped causing and incident. Thank you.
Believe it or not the bigger the airplane the easer it is to handle in this kind of environment. I never flew anything this big but I did fly Airbus wide body aircraft. The amount of energy you have working for you makes it much less unstable. The hardest aircraft to handle in a cross wind was the 737 - 200
This is the first time i`ve seen a passenger plane landing almost vertically like a copter. It seems that there is huge magnet metal lode underneath and captain balls just cooperated with it)
paulusescariot, what makes you so sure I don't? You must have thousands of hours of behind the stick to make that assumption. When crabbing like that and everyone walks away that is some mighty fine airmanship no matter what YOU say.
@@alankjkj1 If that is the case then please explain to me why Etihad's senior training captain sent out a message to all Etihad pilots as a stern warning against choosing commercial pressure over safety
paulusescariot, I didn't say it was smart to land in those conditions now did I? The pilot should have gone around. The fact that the aircraft was still in one piece after it stopped rolling was amazing. And when everyone is able to disembark with no injuries that, my friend, is a good landing. The decision to land wasn't the best so the boss will be pissed off but the execution was outstanding. Could you have landed that aircraft in those conditions?
Sailor Man, thank you for the link it is greatly appreciated. I agree with everything in Captain Barrie’s memo. He said that some would see this as masterful flying but the company does not. I contend that every landing from a Piper cub to that huge Airbus were everyone walks away unscathed shows masterful flying. I stand by my statement the execution was outstanding the decision to land not so much.
Oh yeaaah soo powerful pilot a real king. watching dis from here with my rock playlist crancked to 11. Delta Parole and other rock band etc. LIT LIT LIT!
@@Cowboypt he's a sailor ... check it out, this guy has a reply to almost every positive comment here ... could it be he's just jealous? 😂😂😂 ... and posting some shit pic about a possible kick that he got from Etihad, it's just pathetic. Anyway, if he thinks that this was dangerous he never heard of Madeira ...
@@jorgeferreira2009 yes, jealousy... 😂😂😂 Madeira is like this in pretty much ever flight. Pilots there have so much experience that they already do this with coffee in hand...
One of your greatest captures! May I feature this landing in one of my next episodes? Of course with your logo included and a link back to your original video. Keep up the great work!
@@sailorman8668 Maybe, but since i dont know the procedures, i dont know the information the pilot had at the time and on which based his decision. So i wont shit on them without knowing and just appreciate the landing success.
WOW, great video, amazing Airbus & pilot skills, and really nice outro! > so I subscribed. More cool videos like this in the future, pls! Greeetings from Budapest, Hungary. ;-)
