Storm Rising: Manila's slum dwellers under threat
Sandwiched between a polluted harbor and a busy highway is the charcoal- making a community of Ulingan- in Manila, with a population of 40,000.
Husband and wife team Judy and Babes Barines have operated a charcoal pit for the last nine years. They invested all their savings in charcoal-making but have to make some difficult decisions when their investment is wiped out by a tropical storm that hits the south of the country.
A few kilometers east of the Barines' charcoal pits, corn seller and mother of nine, Bebe, is starting work. But she has not managed to escape the storm either. She has to repair her makeshift home under a bridge and work out how to make a living as her supply of corn dries up.
Meanwhile, Pilipinas Got Talent superstar, Frankendal, is also feeling the effects of the typhoon. He has not heard from his mother and grandmother since the storm, so he heads to the region to look for them. As a former slum dweller, he knows just how precarious life can be.
The six part-series follows residents of Manila's Tondo slums as they live, love, survive and aspire in some of the world's toughest living conditions.

I think there are 6 episodes in this series. This is one of the best series on youtube I have ever seen. Not their poverty and plight. It is their tenacity and will to fight that makes them special. Where a few hundred dollars can change lives.

There is poverty literally in every country, indeed not as extreme as for example in the Philippines, however poverty is everywhere. You’re just being very disrespectful. You probably can help one. Many Europeans, Americans, Australians and others help in the Philippines. If you can help just one family or one child it really means a lot. Sometimes a family can send kids to school with just a little help. You can have one of my families anytime. I have no problem finding others that need help. Helping a begging child/teen rent a room and have some rice is not impossible, prices here are low.

9:03 This shows that poor people do have a choice in how many children they have! I commend this couple. Also the Catholic Church's teaching of "going forth and multiple" was back when human population around 2000 yrs ago was less than 100 million people! So to still follow such archaic teaching is absolutely backward and ridiculous in a world with now over 7 billion people and rising!

Good on them for only having two kids! I truly believe in only having the amount of children that you can afford to give a comfortable life too. My sister has stopped at two because that's what she feels her and her husband can give a comfortable life to - good schooling, clothes, holidays. My husband and I would like 4 because that's what we can provide for. Nothing worse than trying to live outside your means - that includes birthing ten children when you can barely feed yourself!

The Philippine Government is doing its best to improve the quality of the lives of these people. Recently, they inaugurated new concrete houses for them. Services can reach them as well like free education from daycare to college. They can also have access to electricity,internet, and potable water. They are also entitled to any cash aid from the government if ever there is a state of calamity (like during COVID19 lockdowns). How about Ethiopia? How do you address poverty in there?
@winchivaree140
@winchivaree140 2 года назад
It's their own choice whether to live that way. There are many poor people in Korea and Japan, but their slums are clean and organized. It depends on the character of the people living in their community.
@winchivaree140
@winchivaree140 2 года назад
These Slum dwellers have been romanticizing their poverty to depend on others, especially on the government. It's their choice anyway. They are being negotiated to resettle in provinces to start a new life (free housing, all-ready livelihood programs), but they chose to reside in Manila in a disgusting way.
@winchivaree140
@winchivaree140 2 года назад
Did you know? Reproductive Health law was enacted for them to obtain intercoursal education and family planning? Contraceptives are also free, but how come teenage pregnancy and having many children still rampant in their community? It's because of their mindset that is too obsolete.
